Rodale Departures Blamed on Discontent with CEO Maria Rodale

Uh oh.  Rodale has been experiencing some staff departures lately. And sources are telling Fortune that the culprit is discontent with the leadership of Maria Rodale, who became CEO in 2009.

This certainly doesn’t seem like a coincidence:

A spokesperson for Rodale confirmed that the following people left or were fired in 2011: chief information officer Ken Citron; Jack Essig, publisher of Men’s Health; Andrew Livingston, director of consumer engagement; David Marchi, senior vice president of global marketing; chief marketing officer Gregg Michaelson; Mary Murcko, executive vice president and group publisher; Karen Rinaldi, executive vice president and books publisher; Bill Stump, senior vice president and editorial director; and Valerie Valente, a vice president in custom publishing. Rodale.com general manager David Kang, communications executive vice president Robin Shallow and executive vice president and group publisher MaryAnn Bekkedahl also left after Rodale became CEO.

This is in addition to the recent departure of  senior vice president of international operations, Michelle Meyercord, and vice president James Kreckler.

Stephen Borkowski Named Digital Director at Prevention.com

Prevention, the number one healthy lifestyle brand, has hired Stephen Borkowski as digital director of Prevention.com.

Borkowski will report to Bill Stump, editorial director of Prevention.

Prevention.com’s executive editor Deborah Wilburn and the rest of the online team will report to Borkowski.

Borkowski was most recently senior editorial and production director for MensHealth.com where he helped grow monthly unique page views over 31% during a three-year post.

Borkowski also worked at Monster.com and FastWeb.com.

Rodale Restructures Management, Promotes Michaelson To President, CMO

rodale.jpgMen’s Health publisher Rodale Inc. announced a sweeping restructuring of its management team yesterday, along with the promotion of customer marketing EVP Gregg Michaelson to president of integrated marketing and sales and chief marketing officer.

The changes come five months after Rodale’s CEO Steven Pleshette Murphy decided to leave the company and was replaced by the founder’s granddaughter, Maria Rodale.

In addition to Michaelson, several other executives were given additional duties and shuffled around, including editorial execs David Willey, editor-in-chief of Runner’s World and editorial director of Running Times, who will now also serve as editorial director of Bicycling; Bill Stump, who was promoted to SVP/editorial director to oversee Prevention, Organic Gardening and Rodale.com; and Karen Rinaldi, who was promoted to EVP/general manager and publishing director of Rodale Books.

Left out of the promotions was Men’s Health editor David Zinczenko, as pointed out by Jeff Bercovici. The recent cover controversy may have something to do with that.

Other changes saw chief information officer Ken Citron adding COO to his title, Tom Pogash being promoted to CFO, Robin Shallow taking over control of Rodale’s communications department and Paul McGinley becoming EVP/general counsel and chief administrative officer.

Rodale Names New Prevention Digital VP

The vice president and brand editor of Men’s Health and Women’s Health online is now charged with managing Prevention.com and all extensions of the online Prevention brand.

In related news, Rodale announced last week it would launch Prevention Australia.
