LAT Farewells: Bob Sipchen

acemet.jpg Bob Sipchen, a Pulitzer winner who edited the now-dead LAT’s School Me blog, is shoving off for Sierra Magazine. Maybe it’s the mountain air, or maybe it’s the fact that he has taken the buyout after securing gainful employment. Either way, he seems pretty giddy in his farewell note to colleagues.

What is WRONG with you people? Hasn’t Susan Denley told you repeatedly that yyeditall is for official business only!? Now that a few inconsiderate buyoutees have ruined the privilege for all of us, I might as well add my goodbye.

It’s been splendid my brothers and sisters.

Anyone who happens to be near Mt. Washington tomorrow around 7:30 — and is pretty sure they weren’t the reason someone took a buyout — is welcome to stop by the Liberation Celebration we’ll have going. I, for one, will toast the Los Angeles Times and the extraordinary journalists who will continue to produce some of the strongest work in newspapers.

Love,

Bob Sipchen

She continues with the gruesome imagery, talking about how her former boss Bob Sipchen convinced her to endure “sleeping bags crawling with bugs and peeing in the river” in Utah.

She may pine for her good old days, but we’re personally happy to read her insider-y musings at her new home. So, sorry for your loss, Janine. But it may be our gain.

Bob Sipchen Lights Out for the Territory–As Sierra EIC

Bob Sipchen, another LAT veteran, is joining the Sierra Club, as was predicted when the buyouts were announced. Sipchen, who’s won everything worth winning, will be Editor in Chief of Sierra magazine and Deputy National Communications Director.

Sipchen won the 2002 Pulitzer Prize and Society of Professional Journalists’ Sigma Delta Chi award for editorial writing (with Alex Raksin) for a series about people with mental illness and addictions living on
America’s streets. Sipchen also shared in the paper’s Pulitzer for its team coverage of the 1992 riots in Los Angeles.

His outdoor creds are equally strong.
