Sharon Bernstein Segues from NBC LA to Reuters

After a couple of weeks off, NBC Southern California and former LA Times staffer Sharon Bernstein (pictured) has started an exciting new career chapter today. She’s joined the Thomson Reuters LA bureau to cover California politics, policy issues and broader western U.S. topics.

That’s not all. Later this summer, Bernstein will be relocating for that beat to Sacramento to launch a Reuters bureau in the state capital. “I will be the only person in the bureau,” Bernstein tells FishbowlLA via email. “I will have two to three stringers that I will be able to work with on stories. The primary beat is California politics and policy issues, but there will be times when I will need to cover other stories in the region, depending on what’s breaking or what’s important, or if I do spot an interesting trend or that sort of thing.”

It’s definitely a change from the local topics she was usually covering for NBC LA. “I’m very excited,” Bernstein adds. And who can blame her? Along with AP, Reuters remains a journalistic gold standard and the kind of place where Bernstein could presumably at the right future time also start doing the kind of enterprise stuff she was involved with at LAT.

After 20 Years, Family Matters Pull Bob Tourtellotte Away from Reuters

In a matter of just a few months, the location and professional focus of veteran journalist Bob Tourtellotte have been completely uprooted.

Tourtellote was forced to take a leave of absence in early September from his post as entertainment editor at Reuters LA headquarters because of the passing of his father in Oklahoma. The wire service was extremely supportive in trying to accommodate their staffer’s time away, but because of such issues as needing to deal in the new year with his late father’s estate, the span of time became too long to accommodate. Tourtellote’s last official day with Reuters, where he began working in 1992, was December 31.

And today was Tourtellotte’s first day teaching an undergraduate journalism class at his Alma Mater Oklahoma State University. “When I found I was going to be here in Stillwater through the spring, I decided to contact OSU and see if there was anything I could do,” Tourtellotte tells FishbowlLA via telephone. “They said, ‘We’ll find something,’ and now here I am. I’ve never taught a class before; it’s a new challenge.”

Josh Dickey Steals LA Press Club Show

Although Variety‘s Andrew Stewart was unable to attend the Thursday, November 11th Los Angeles Press Club panel discussion examining the challenging future of entertainment trade reporting, that still left Gregg Kilday of The Hollywood Reporter, Bob Tourtellotte from Reuters, Andrew Hampp of Ad Age and The Wrap’s Josh Dickey (pictured), subbing for a screening-diverted Sharon Waxman.

During a 90-minute discussion moderated by NPR contributor Anthea Raymond, each panelist made fine observations about the current state of the Hollywood and Madison Ave. trade nation, touching on everything from the broad re-purposing of an Us Weekly story about Beyonce being pregnant (she wasn’t) to the Mad Hatter beats of Twitter feeds.
