Ex-NBC CEO Wright On NBCU Spinoff: It Wouldn’t Surprise Me

Two (relative) bombshells from Tim Arango‘s interview with outgoing NBC Universal CEO Bob Wright in next month’s issue of Fortune:

Early next year Time Warner can separate its cable business from its content businesses without incurring a large tax liability — an event, he says, that could spur efforts to combine NBC Universal and Time Warner, parent of Fortune’s publisher. “It would be a great combination,” he says.

Also:

Arango: Over the years GE (Charts) has considered spinning off NBC. Would you be surprised if in three to five years NBC Universal was not part of GE?

Wright: I wouldn’t be surprised. …

GE CEO On New York Post NBCU Sale Story: ‘Made-Up Stupid Drivel’

Media quote of the day number two, via Fortune:

“That was more or less made-up stupid drivel,” says General Electric Chairman and CEO Jeff Immelt about a story in Wednesday’s New York Post, which speculates that he is considering a sale or spin-off of NBC Universal.

The “more or less” part is intriguing, considering NBCU “more or less” laid off 700 employees last fall.

By the way, Immelt made the comment Wednesday afternoon to 400 NBCU employees in Rock Center’s Studio 8H (where SNL is taped) who gathered to welcome Jeff Zucker as their new CEO and to honor outgoing head Bob Wright.

‘NBCU 2.0′: Wright’s Move Gets Zucker Made

Jack wouldnt’ve, but it appears Bob just did.

Former GE CEO Jack Welch in last week’s New York magazine:

If NBC isn’t doing so well, why is Jeff Zucker still in his job?
JACK: ‘Cause I’m retired. [Pause.] And I think they’ve got a little turnaround going on now. Heroes. And Sunday Night Football helps a lot.

Bob Wright‘s move:

Jeff Zucker, the fast-rising television executive who made his name as executive producer of NBC’s morning show “Today,” will be named chief executive of NBC Universal this week, according to four people at the company. Zucker, 41, will succeed Bob Wright, who has spent nearly 21 years building the company brick by brick, transforming “the peacock” from a stand-alone TV network into a sprawling entertainment empire with broadcast and cable channels, a Hollywood movie studio and theme parks.

For Wright, it allegedly came down to a single, delectable choice:

“I’m in a very funny position with Zucker. Either I promote him or fire him.”
