Far Eastern Economic Review To Close Up Shop

Sept_Cover.jpgThe Far Eastern Economic Review will cease publication in December, the magazines’s owner Dow Jones said yesterday.

Dow Jones, which also publishes The Wall Street Journal, said the Review‘s closure would allow the company to focus on “core products” and “key markets” like India, China and Japan in order to boost the company’s growth in Asia.

“Unfortunately, despite several attempts at invigorating the brand, the Review‘s continued losses in advertising revenue and readers are now unsustainable,” Dow Jones said. The pub’s opinion and commentary will now be spread across Dow Jones’ other outlets.

Wall Street Journal Makes 2 International Editorial Page Appointments

journal logo.pngThe Wall Street Journal yesterday announced two moves within the opinion pages of the financial paper’s international editions.

Bret Stephens, who currently writes the Global View column for the Journal has been appointed deputy editorial page editor for the paper’s editions in Europe and Asia. He will continue to write his weekly column while overseeing the opinion pages both online and in print, and he will be managing the Far Eastern Economic Review and the Journal‘s foreign affairs columnists as well.

Meanwhile, Brian Carney will be moving to London to serve as editorial page editor of The Wall Street Journal Europe, a post he formerly held from 2004 until 2005. Carney’s editorials about mortgage giants Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac scored him a Gerald Loeb Award for commentary this year.
