A Harvey Milk Election Campaign Moment

SheilaKuehlPicSheila Kuehl, the first openly gay person to be elected Los Angeles County Supervisor, capped a hard-fought fall 2014 campaign against Maria Shriver‘s brother Bobby with a late October event at the home of GLAAD co-founder Dean Hansell. Among those in attendance was veteran journalist Mike Szymanski, whose Election Day report documents a notable full-circle moment:

“My hero was of course Harvey Milk, and I was honored to follow in his footsteps because he paved the way for someone like me,” she said. In the audience was Dustin Lance Black, who won the Academy Award for writing Milk

Here Comes the Deep Throat Judge…

It’s early in the New Year, but the rotating quartet of performers set to play the part of the Southern judge who heard a Deep Throat obscenity case is going to be a hard, cheeky combo to beat. Per Studio City Patch local editor Mike Szymanski‘s write-up of preparations for the play The Deep Throat Sex Scandal, opening at the Zephyr Theatre in Hollywood January 24:

Porn star Ron Jeremy said, “This is a way to bring a whole new audience to discover the importance of Deep Throat.” He, writer Bruce Vilanch, actor Christopher Knight (The Brady Bunch) and porn legend Bill Margold will take turns playing the conservative Southern judge that heard the case trying to prosecute Deep Throat and trying to define obscenity.

This west coast version of the Off-Broadway play is being shepherded by Studio City resident David Bertolino. Among the many other recognizable names taking part is Georgina Spelvin, the one-time star of a movie (The Devil in Miss Jones) that was double billed with Deep Throat. She has told Bertolino this will be her final public appearance.

Radiotitans.com Adding More Colorful Shows

Launched this past summer, Internet broadcaster Radiotitans.com is the brainchild of Jake Belcher, Brant Thoman and Carl Kozlowski, a stand-up comic, film critic and arts editor for the Pasadena Weekly. For a fee of $50 per hour, a wide range of comics and entertainers have chosen to stream their programs through the Hollywood-based outlet. Alongside flagship podcast Grand Theft Audio, hosted by the station’s three co-founders.

There are currently 16 shows on the grid including weekly interview programs Name-Dropping with Jason Stuart, for which the openly gay comic (and SAG LGBT Committee chair) has talked to everyone from Hollywood writer Bruce Vilanch to actress Michelle Lee, and Inside Out with Joie Blaney. Come January, more impressive programming will be added.

Writer and executive producer Rick Najera (In Living Color), set next month to also direct another Diversity Sketch Comedy Showcase for CBS, will be starting up an interview program focused on ethnic and other diversity-spectrum entertainers. Two more Radiotitans.com programs being finalized are to be hosted by Puerto Rican comic Brenda Lamberty and African-American stand-up Laurence White.

Live Action Short Winner Gets Star Treatment Back Home

The 83rd annual Academy Awards may have blown harder than the Santa Ana’s, but that golden statuette still holds a powerful glow when removed from the stench of a James Franco let down by Bruce Vilanch.

In a great little piece in Delaware’s Dover Post, we learn that Live Action Short winner Luke Matheny (God of Love, pictured) was treated like royalty when he returned on March 14th to his Alma Mater Concord High School. There to welcome him were teachers, neighbors, students, journalists, a 10-foot replica of the Oscar, and… state Governor Jack Markell.

In honor of his hometown pride and willingness to give Delaware a “shout-out,” during his acceptance speech at the Oscars and in God of Love, Markell named Matheny “Delaware’s Ambassador to Hollywood.”
