Exclusive: Don Dahler Leaving Channel 2 for CBS News

Don Dahler, the WCBS weekend anchor, is leaving the station. FishbowlNY has learned that the veteran newsman will be a correspondent for CBS News.

Although Dahler’s time at WCBS was productive, it can also be described as dizzying. He joined WCBS in September 2007, initially as weekend evening anchor. By May 2008, Dahler was named weekday noon and 6 p.m. co-anchor.

That lasted until September 2011 when Dahler was shifted back to weekends to make way for Chris Wragge following his stint on The Early Show.

Related: FishbowlNY, WCBS Shuffles Don Dahler to Weekends

Upon Dahler’s return to weekends, he was given the tiring split shift, early morning anchor with Cindy Hsu and solo at 11 p.m. (usually delayed on Sundays due to sports coverage). During the week, Dahler files reports for WCBS and sister site WLNY. Since Wragge has been filling in mornings on Channel 2, Dahler has been the co-anchor at 6 and 9 p.m (on WLNY) with Dana Tyler.

Sources say Dahler will be based in New York as a reporter for the CBS Evening News and CBS This Morning. CBS News declined a comment to FishbowlNY.

It’s a homecoming of sorts for Dahler, who got his start in network news as a 48 Hours producer.

Tina Brown, Newsweek/Daily Beast Editor-in-Chief, Talks About Going Digital

Tina Brown, the Newsweek/Daily Beast editor-in-chief, discussed the decision this morning on CBS This Morning to move her publication from print to digital.

As we reported yesterday, after 80 years of buying Newsweek at the newsstand or by home delivery, the company is dropping the print version as of December 31.

Brown told Charlie Rose this morning that the mobile app is no longer the future.

“We really do feel that we’ve reached a tipping point in this industry,” Brown said. “That you’re seeing now – there are 17 million tablets now in the U.S., iPad Minis coming out with 10 million ordered.”

Rose asked her if this dramatic move was expected at the beginning of Brown’s tenure at Newsweek/Daily Beast.

“Two years ago this wouldn’t have been the absolutely inevitable outcome this fast. But the fact is that The Daily Beast is enormously successful… We have had a 70 percent increase in traffic and we’re part of Barry Diller’s international company, which is 21 digital companies under one roof, so there was always a feeling and a knowledge inside us that eventually we would go to be a digital company.”

More from the CBS interview after the jump.

The Guardian Celebrates Six Months in U.S. with Journalism Debate

Juan Williams and Charlie Rose/Getty Images for The Guardian

The Guardian, the iconic U.K. newspaper, branched out across the pond last year. Last night, it was time for the tabloid to reap the rewards. Rather than a simple party, The Guardian made it a creative thinking process for the several hundred invited guests.

The newspaper provided a debate between commercial pressures and journalistic standards. CBS This Morning‘s Charlie Rose was the engaging moderator.

The panel featured someone who knows first-hand about the pressures of journalistic standards. Juan Williams was dramatically fired by NPR in 2010. Williams, who remains a contributor to Fox News, has had time to reflect on his ugly end to an 11-year tenure.

“It’s not fun being called a bigot and a bad journalist,” Williams tells FishbowlNY. “The degree to which it was about assailing my personal reputation, struck me as Kafkaesque. I didn’t know what to make of it.”

CBS News Producer and Former Daily News Reporter Recounts Life in Memoir

Paul LaRosa is a longtime producer at CBS News, having transitioned to electronic media following a long stint at the New York Daily News. Before that LaRosa, the lifelong New Yorker, attended Fordham University. But his career was shaped even earlier growing up in the Monroe Housing Projects in the Bronx. LaRosa went to Blessed Sacrament for grade school at the same time as future Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor. One year her senior, LaRosa didn’t know Sotomayor, who lived at a neighboring housing project.

LaRosa, 58, has recalled his many personal experiences in a fascinating memoir, Leaving Story Avenue by Park Slope Publishing, released April 18th.

“It was such an amazing time–the late 1970s in New York–it was just before computers came into being,” LaRosa tells FishbowlNY.

LaRosa writes intensively about his 16 years at the News.

“It was the end of the Front Page era because people would drink at their desks, everybody smoked,” LaRosa says. “It was no big deal to spend hours at Louie’s [bar behind the Daily News building]…It was still like an old Humphrey Bogart movie.”

CBS This Morning Makes Major Changes to the Formula, But Do They Work?

Charlie Rose flanked by Gayle King (left) and Erica Hill.

The latest attempt by CBS to find a ray of sunlight in morning news makes big changes from the norm, but overall the experiment is missing the mark.

Television is all about chemistry and cohesion. CBS is in such a difficult spot as the perennial number three in the morning. Therefore, a radical change isn’t so outlandish. But in the end, morning viewers are habitual. It’s the executives who want to reinvent the wheel.

And so, CBS did. Not only is the wheel reinvented, the entire set is revamped, and the much publicized new on-air team is in place.

This is not your father’s morning news show. Gone is the quick news update each half hour and the nation’s weather forecast (they still break away for local weather).

Immediately, the viewer is greeted by the “Eye Opener,” a one-time 90-second collage of sounds and images from the day before.

New York Times reporter Jodi Kantor is making waves with her book The Obamas, which is being described as a tell-all of the administration and First Family that chronicles the tensions within both. Naturally, everyone is clamoring to read it.

Except The First Lady.

In an interview with CBS News, conducted by Gayle King, Mrs. Obama cleared up some of the allegations from Kantor’s book — including clarifying the status of her relationship with former White House Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel as close, although the book painted it as strained.

She readily admitted that she hasn’t read Kantor’s book, adding: “…who can write about how I feel? Who? What third person can tell me how I feel, or anybody for that matter?”

Valid questions.

‘Wasn’t a Surprise’ for Ousted Early Show Anchor Chris Wragge

EXCLUSIVE: The news broke last week –another year, another revamp to CBS’ morning entry–The Early Show. Today, at the West 57th Street headquarters, CBS execs unveiled the new wake-up team of veteran interviewer Charlie Rose and Oprah’s BFF, Gayle King.

At the same time in the Meatpacking District, soon-to-be former Early Show anchor Chris Wragge was emceeing the launch of AmberWatch TV.

It was there that FishbowlNY caught up with the genial anchorman.

Wragge, who left WCBS/Channel 2 as the station’s top presence at the end of 2010, says he saw it coming.

“They’ve been great. They’ve been very upfront with me,” Wragge admits. “When new people come in they want their people fronting their new shows. So, it wasn’t a surprise to me [and] didn’t come as a shock to me.”

Remembering Andy Rooney, a ‘Giant of a Man’

He was a staple at CBS for more than 60 years, but Andy Rooney became a household name when he joined 60 Minutes on a regular basis in 1978. He retired from the program just last month, vowing that he wasn’t retiring because “writers don’t retire, and I’ll always be a writer.”

Rooney died last night in New York at the age of 92.

Another longtime fixture at CBS News, Sunday Morning host Charles Osgood knew Rooney for decades, and says his popularity on 60 Minutes was cemented early in his career.

“An important thing that people overlook about Andy is that he was a comedy writer,” Osgood tells FishbowlNY.

Rooney established his writing chops with CBS heavyweights Arthur Godfrey and Garry Moore.

Later, he moved his talents from the entertainment side to news, collaborating with Harry Reasoner for his prime time “reports.”

But it was at 60 Minutes that Rooney would write for himself and get in front of camera.

Lara Logan’s First Interview Since Being Attacked in Egypt

In early February, CBS News Correspondent Lara Logan was sexually assaulted by a mob while covering the uprising in Egypt. Today, for the first time since the incident, she discussed details about the tragedy and the hope that the situation doesn’t end up defining her.

Logan tells the New York Times that the mob overtook her and her crew quickly, and “for an extended period of time, they raped me with their hands.” She explains that as the crowd tore off her clothes, they only became more ruthless:

What really struck me was how merciless they were. They really enjoyed my pain and suffering. It incited them to more violence.

However, somehow through all of the trauma, Logan immediately decided to speak up about what happened, so that it might help other female journalists who have been sexually assaulted come forward.
