Shaq, Phil, Jeanie and Fellow Lakers ‘Superman’ Hang Out at HuffPost Live

This was anything but the usual HuffPost Live Google+ hangout. Ahead of tonight’s retiring of Shaquille O’Neal‘s Lakers jersey at Staples Center, host Marc Lamont Hill welcomed Shaq, Phil Jackson, Jeanie Buss and (a little later into the conversation) Kurt Rambis. Before O’Neal, Rambis also famously earned the nickname “Superman” from Chick Hearn.

There’s no better way to get in the mood for tonight’s induction ceremony (or follow it up later) than by watching this half-hour conversation. You know it’s a good HuffPost Live segment when one of the network’s other hosts, Jacob Soboroff, chimes into the chat room with, “One of the great HPL interviews. Well done.”

A favorite part for us was when Buss reacted to Shaq’s first set of comments, explaining that she had never heard the story of what Jerry West told #34 when The Big Newcomer first joined the purple and gold. The story magically ties into what is scheduled to transpire at Staples tonight.

That’s why Scully made sure he publicly congratulated his close friend by calling into ESPN 710 on Tuesday and welcoming him to the championship ring club.

And if you wondered how Miller would have called the final seconds of Game 6, ESPN’s Arash Markazi has the audio:

Chick Hearn Selected to LAT Sports Figures List

Chick Hearn, the voice of the Los Angeles Lakers for nearly 40 years, was selected as the No. 7 greatest figure in Los Angeles sports history by online readers of the Los Angeles Times.

He’s the second media member to make the Top 20 — former LAT sports columnist Jim Murray was No. 19 on the list.

Hearn, who died in 2002, called 3,338 consecutive games for the Lakers from 1965 to 2001. The streak came to an end after  the Hall of Fame announcer underwent cardiac bypass surgery. Hearn was honored by the Lakers last year with a bronze statue outside Staples Center.

Los Angeles Downtown News Invites Readers to Reshuffle Power List

What’s the fun of a 2011 Power List if a reader can’t revamp it?

That seems to be the thinking of Los Angeles Downtown News executive editor Jon Regardie. After sharing his picks earlier this week for the 42 most powerful people in the corner of town that Tom Gilmore helped build, he is asking readers to chime in with their Top Ten remix. The best such lists will be shared in a future issue of the free weekly publication.
