Country Living Gets New Associate Publisher

country.jpgIt was only four months ago that Hearst scooped one of Time Inc.‘s magazine execs to work on its Country Living title. Chris Allen was formerly the senior vice president of Cooking Light before he jumped companies in September to become Living‘s publisher.

Now Hearst has made the same move again, by giving former Cooking Light associate publisher Kassie Means the same role over at Country Living. Considering last year’s major cuts across Time Inc., we’re happy to see that some media executives can still find work elsewhere.

Former Cooking Light SVP Chris Allen Named Publisher Of Country Living

October 2009 Cover.jpgHearst Magazines today announced the appointment of Chris Allen as vice president/publisher of Country Living magazine — America’s bestselling shelter magazine on newsstands.

Allen, formerly of Time Inc.‘s Cooking Light, is replacing Steve Grune, who is making a move into Hearst’s Integrated Media group.

Allen previously worked for 17 years at Cooking Light, as associate publisher and then senior vice president, publisher. He has also worked at People, Yachting magazine, Cruising World magazine and New England Monthly.

Also today, there were reports of editorial change at Allen’s former home Cooking Light. The Media of Birmingham blog reported that editor-in-chief Mary Kay Culpepper will be departing the Southern Progress publication on October 1, to be replaced by Scott Mowbray, who has been working as executive editor Time Inc.’s Lifestyle Group since this spring.

A Time Inc. publicist confirmed Culpepper’s move to FishbowlNY, adding that she will be starting a creativity studies graduate program in New York next spring. Cooking Light has also recently undergone a redesign. The revamped magazine hit newsstands August 25.

Sales Team Moves At Bonnier, MSLO

Balis-b1.jpgThere’s news of two moves among sales teams at magazine publishers Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia and Bonnier Corp.

MediaDailyNews reports that MSLO has brought on Janet Balis (left) as executive vice president of media sales and marketing. She will oversee sales across the publishing, broadcast and digital properties and will report to MSLO’s executive chair Charles Koppelman. Balis joins MSLO from her own consutling company Digital Media Strategies, where she has worked for the past year and half. She also previously worked for Time Warner, where she served in positions at Time.com, People.com and AOL.

Over at Bonnier, Chris Allen, VP of group publishing and corporate sales for nine of the company’s travel, shelter and lifestyle titles, is departing after less than a month on the job, Mediaweek reported. Allen was hired to serve in one of two group publishing roles created by Bonnier when it acquired five titles from Hachette Filipacchi last month.

Mediaweek said Allen, who had previously served as publisher for Cooking Light, is leaving without another job lined up.

“It was more of a three- to four-week consulting trial,” Allen told Mediaweek. “I just think the nature of the job to be done on the particular titles was not what I expected it to be. I think I thought it was a larger, more strategic task than it was.”
