Wainwright Huge Draw For H’wood Heavyweights, Homos

rufus.jpegThe combination of Rufus Wainwright and some classic Judy Garland songs proved to be an attraction that some of Hollywood’s elite couldn’t resist.

Thus, Wainwright’s Sunday night show at the Hollywood Bowl was a veritable who’s who of Tinseltown‘s gay bold-faced names along with some female celebs thrown in for good measure.

FBLA was in the mix in a big way with VIP seats just a stone’s throw from the stage (thanks, Michael), surrounded by all the town’s A-listers.

Seated directly in front of us – surrounded by a trio of pretty boys – was David Geffen, who often was the first to rise to two feet with an energetic applause.

And he wasn’t the only one. Also spotted in FBLA’s immediate vicinity were heavyweight industryites Barry Diller, Bill Condon, Donald DeLine, Laurence Mark, Drew Barrymore, Reese Witherspoon, Hilary Swank (with John Campisi), WMA agent Rena Ronson, Bruce Vilanch, Ryan Murphy, Bruce Cohen, Dan Bucatinsky and others like Dita Von Teese, Ann Magnuson and Robert Gant

And though they may be power players, that didn’t stop some of the notable concert-goers – treated to Wainwright’s renditions of Garland’s beloved tunes, at times accompanied by his mother, sister and Garland’s daughter Lorna Luft – from letting loose and sneaking in some party favors.

Yeah, it’s true: FBLA saw what David Geffen was passing around – and it wasn’t a bottle of Pinot. We won’t out everyone we saw indulging in illegal yet typical concert behavior but you know who you are!

Bening Bows Out of Species

Panettiere Joins Lear’s Political Party

hayden.jpeg
Hayden Panettiere’s legal status served as an ongoing joke at last Sunday’s Emmy Awards telecast but the Heroes starlet is working hard to stop the laughs surrounding her 18th birthday.

She is scheduled to join America Ferrerra and other celeb names at a Sept. 27 private political party for Norman Lear’s Declare Yourself organization.

The bash kicks off Hollywood Celebrates 18 campaign and will be held at the Beverly Hills Cultural Center. It’s still a party and young voters will be able to act their age and dance to beats by fellow legal deejay Nick Cannon.

Joe Francis Speaks Out Behind Bars

joe francis.jpeg
Girls Gone Wild founder Joe Francis is still being held in a Nevada jail on various charges but that hasn’t stopped him from reaching out to friends and colleagues outside the cell to let them know about his legal sitch.

In an email letter received by FBLA on Thursday, Francis says that he has kept his comments to himself during his entire six month jail stay because “I believed in the American judicial process.”

Obviously, that has changed.

“I am sad to say that in recent months, this belief has begun to erode. The system that I believed would protect and exonerate me has instead been used in far more troubling ways.”

Those ways are detailed on a new website, and he is requesting that friends forward the link on to better inform themselves of his current standing with the law.

Why?

“I never expected my life to be a cautionary tale, but if revealing the truth behind my circumstances can help one other person avoid being grievously mishandled by the justice system, then it is worth telling.”

seacrest.jpegFox, Seacrest Pairing Plunges Emmy Ratings
It’s safe to say that Monday was a pretty bad day for Fox and Ryan Seacrest. Their tag-team on Sunday’s Emmy telecast was the second lowest rated show in the awards’ history, garnering just 13.1 million viewers, reports Variety. The tally was well below the 16.2 million that NBC snagged for the same show last year. And to make matters worse for Fox, the smallest Emmy aud is still the 1990 telecast which drew 12.3 million and also aired on Fox. Maybe they should stick to American Idol? Just a thought…

Casting News
Variety gives the skinny on a couple casting stories. First Tobey Maguire and Jake Gyllenhaal are in negotiations to star in Jim Sheridan’s Brothers for Relativity Media, a remake of Susanne Bier’s Danish-language drama. Meanwhile, Oscar winner Jim Broadbent has signed on to join the next Harry Potter pic, Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince. Broadbent will play a retired potion’s master.

W Mag Lassoes NBC’s Silverman

ben.jpegNBC Universal’s TV entertainment chief Ben Silverman has industry insiders divided thanks to his success on the small-screen coupled with an over-the-top attitude.

W Magazine’s October issue lets readers judge for themselves in a feature – penned by Senior Writer Gabriel Snyder – on NBC’s main man and here’s a sampling of what he has to say for himself on everything from what makes him “the perfect storm” to his affection for the green stuff.

On his move to NBC: “I think I am the audience, you know what I mean? I viscerally respond. I am conceptual and a dealmaker.” he says, sitting in his new office at NBC. Those are things that usually don’t all come in the same package. I am the perfect storm for making a television executive.”

On the drug rumors: “I did not quit smoking pot to take this job. I’m still single, and I go out with my friends, but it was a nonissue for me. I think it blew out of proportion because I have nice Lucien [Pellat-Finet] sweaters with pot-leaf embroidery and I have some hemp sneakers. The day my deal was done, I said, ‘I want to get this freakin’ piss test out of the way.’ All these people are, like, accusing me of s—.”

On his involvement in the premature leak of his NBC appointment: “Oh, God no. It ruined my weekend. People were all over me, shooting me e-mails, circling me. I literally had to go in my room and pace on the phone the entire time. I wanted to be the cover of The New York Times and The Wall Street Journal.”

More info on the issue and Silverman’s story can be found here.
