But Bush wasn’t the only one to join in the stupidity. The media was quick to jump on the bandwagon too. On the Huffington Post today, Greg Mitchell, a contributor to The Nation, explains how virtually every major media outlet jumped at the chance to announce that the Iraq war was over, and that the United States prevailed.

There was Chris Matthews, who got weird with this quote:

Women like a guy who’s president. Check it out. The women like this war. I think we like having a hero as our president. It’s simple.

Then Brian Williams told us all how “beautiful” the event was and USA Today ran a column titled “Relax, Celebrate Victory.” But perhaps no reaction was as ridiculous as the Op-Ed by Maureen Dowd, who took Top Gun references to an all time high:

Now that summer is unofficially over and the glitterati have shuttered their cottages in the Hamptons, the regulars have begun to trickle into Michael’s for catch-up power lunches. Things weren’t exactly operating at full tilt today, but there were enough media mavens and moguls scattered around the dining room to signal that the city’s busy social season is upon us. So, pack up those summer whites and buckle down. It’s back to business.

I was joined today by jewelry designer Lisa Salzer and my good pal Miriam Driot, who is handling international public relations and marketing for Lisa’s line of vintage costume jewelry, Lulu Frost. The gals were all abuzz about Lisa’s first-ever Fashion Week presentation with live models at MAC & Milk Studio next Monday. Lisa says the show will have an “elegant, fifties feel” and feature Mad Men-inspired period clothes from Amarcord. Despite the frenzy going on in showrooms all over town, this afternoon Lisa was the embodiment of Grace Kelly cool. “It’s the calm before the storm,” she joked.

In just six years, Lisa went from being a Dartmouth college student who sold jewelry out of her dorm room to respected talent whose vintage pieces are carried in Barneys, Bergdorf Goodman and overseas in Paris and Japan. “It’s my passion,” she said. She also told me she inherited her love of all that glitters from her grandmother who ran an antique estate jewelry firm in England.

When I asked her how her business has been affected by the lingering recession, she said: “We’ve been lucky. Things have been very good. Because the collection is costume, women are still buying the pieces they love. It’s much different than selling apparel.” I’ll say. In fact, Lisa is so optimistic about her clients’ bling obsession that she’s planning to launch a fine jewelry collection next year.

Weird,” he said.

We also discuss WebNewser’s scoop that ABC is having to change the name of their daily Web show from “The Fix” to something else (Steve says it could be “The Quick Fix,” and looks like he’s right) because Chris Cillizza has been writing a blog under that name since 2005 — it’s still unclear how ABC missed this in the naming process. And finally, will bloggers pay for online news? I say yes, Steve says maybe. Also, how long till paid content becomes a reality? I think we should start a bracket. The Daily Beast and Morning Joe crews jointly hosted a well-attended (though tricky to-get-to courtesy of a myriad of road blocks) brunch this morning at the Council on Foreign Relations building. While plenty of bold-faces mingled the room imbibing “Obamimosas” and quiche, the star of the hour had to be David Axlerod whose hand everyone wanted to shake.

We bumped into Peggy Noonan who told us that after the pilot on her US Airways flight from New York yesterday came on to announce they were departing for Washington D.C. the entire plane had burst into applause.

Jay Carney, who is departing Time to be Joe Biden‘s director of communications showed us his transition Blackberry (they get a new one next Tuesday) and said that there will be no AIMing in the Vice President’s office, either (Joe will have to give up his Berry, also). He also said that he doesn’t foresee himself coming back to news reporting after his stint in the government, though “maybe as a columnist.” Of course what journalism will look like in four to eight years is anyone’s guess! Trouble has been brewing at MSNBC on this front for a while now. Page Six notes Tom Brokaw‘s comment that “Keith has gone too far. I think Chris has gone too far.” Up until Sarah Palin entered the picture one of the most talked about stories at the conventions these last two weeks was the behind-the-scene turmoil at the cable network. These rumblings were picked up on early by Rachel Sklar, in the wake of Dan Abrams losing his show and Rachel Maddow being brought on — Sklar saw Maddow’s hiring as sign of “MSNBC moving sharply to the left.” MSNBC plans to keep Olbermann and Matthews on as post-debate political analysts.

America Ferrera and John Mayer

It’s arguably the most exclusive magazine party of the year. (Graydon Carter‘s Vanity’s Fair Oscar party perhaps being the other.) John Edwards mingled with John Mayer. Sir Richard Branson (just back from dogsledding in Alaska) commandeered the corner of the bar like a Virgin spaceship, and allowed Henry Kissinger to ride co-pilot. Craigslist’s Craig Newmark chatted up Wikipedia’s Jimmy Wales. New England Patriots coach Bill Belichick walked through the cocktail hour unrecognized. Michael J. Fox, too, virtually unnoticed, chatted with Elizabeth Vargas near the glass window overlooking Central Park. Arianna Huffington was noticed. (Line uttered in every pre-dinner conversation: “Is that someone? It looks like someone, I don’t know … do you?”)

Time Warner execs — like Richard Parsons and Jeffrey Bewkes — buzzed along the edges as the usual media-on-media action (including Ad Age‘s Nat Ives, WWD‘s Stephanie Smith, Jossip’s David Hauslaib, New York mag’s Jesse Oxfeld, Gawker’s Lockhart Steele and Doree Shafrir, ETP’s Rachel Sklar, Glynnis MacNicol, Julia Allison, Radar‘s Jeff Bercovici, NYO‘s Michael Calderone) made nice use of the open bar.

But as much firepower as there was at last night’s Time 100 party at Jazz at Lincoln Center, just 36 of the 100 to make 2007′s “most influential people in the world” list made it, and there were plenty of notable no-shows: No Obama. No Borat. No Queen of England. Rosie. No Leo. No Gore. No Timberlake. No Tyra.

But impassioned speeches — delivered over dinner by Elizabeth Edwards, Brian Williams, Bloomberg (with an ode to late Boston Celtics’ exec Red Auerbach — huh?) Branson and others — and a three-song set by Mayer more than made up for the relative lack of A-listers.

Others spotted during cocktail hour: Cate Blanchett, Mayor Bloomberg, Queen Rania Al-Abdullah of Jordan, Simon Fuller, Charlie Rose, Tina Fey, Mario Cuomo, Martha Stewart, Brian Grazer, Gayle King (no Oprah), Matt Lauer, Chris Matthews, Brian Williams, Ziyi Zhang, Police Commisioner Ray Kelly, Suzanne Vega, Harvey Weinstein, David Lauren and Lauren Bush.
