Tumblr Hires Writers to Report on Tumblr, Tumblr Users, Other Items No One Cares About

Tumblr, the blogging site, has hired two writers to cover the site and its users. The New York Times reports that Chris Mohney, a Senior Vice President for Content at BlackBook Media, has been named Editor-in-Chief and Jessica Bennett, a Senior Writer and Editor at Newsweek/The Daily Beast, is Executive Editor.

Mohney and Bennett’s articles will appear on Tumblr’s homepage, with the hope that it will keep users lingering, thus making the site more attractive to advertisers. The two will be tasked with writing about the dynamics of Tumblr and the people behind the blogs. “I’m trying to figure out how we cover the ideas, themes and people who live in it,” Bennett told the Times.

Oh! Well, that just sounds… Terrible.

Another Freelance Writer Going Hungry?

Stories about freelance writers not getting paid for their work are becoming all too frequent of late. This time around the magazine in question is BlackBook. Freelance writer Nicole Brydson writes at the blog Brooklyn the Borough that the magazine, which hired her to pen a NYC shopping guide at a rate of $20 per item, for a total of 200 listings, initially stalled on the final payment of $1440, and is now apparently attempting to back out altogether claiming Brydson didn’t meet her deadline. Says Brydson:

My deadline was August 1, 2008. After some administrative issues with the website ensued, I was unable to upload my items onto the BlackBook website until early September.

My editor over this time was unresponsive, and took his time editing and placing my work on the site. In the end, 172 of 200 listings were completed by December, and before I could upload the final 28, my login was disabled and my contract was terminated.

Gawker Fires Mohney, Rehires Sicha

Gawker Media has fired Chris Mohney, the first-ever managing editor of its flagship, Gawker, six months into his tenure. Daily Intel, edited by former Gawker co-editor Jesse Oxfeld (and former mediabistro.com editor), has the scoop on his old digs:

Gawker Media, Nick Denton‘s swaggering blog network, yesterday fired Chris Mohney, the managing editor of its flagship site, Gawker, and will replace him with Choire Sicha [left], the New York Observer writer and editor who was solo editor of Gawker in 2003 and 2004.

Daily Intel is quick to point out Gawker’s stagnant traffic which had “doubled in the prior year” as the reason for Mohney’s ousting, and Sicha’s unhappiness at the Observer for his jump.

UPDATE: Mohney is moving to an as-yet-unannounced post within Gawker Media in the short term, says Eat The Press.
