Partying With Tina Brown and The Daily Beast: ‘I Would Never Ask a Writer to Work for Free’

Tina Brown‘s The Daily Beast, which has been making headlines since it launched last month, threw a launch part of sorts at Pop Burger in the meat-packing district last night. Everyone’s favorite late-night eatery was a far cry from the extravagant Liberty Island party that heralded the launch of Talk, Brown’s last media (ad)venture. But these are tough times! And believe us when we say no one in the packed crowd of the usual media suspects (and Christopher Buckley) was complaining about the open bar or the platters of mini burgers that circulated the room.

While Brown was greeted with a certain amount of skepticism when she initially announced her plans to launch, with the help of Barry Diller, what would become the Beast, the site has managed to establish itself incredibly quickly, helped along no doubt by the sudden influx of good (unemployed) writers on the market.

Somehow we missed this the other night. Christopher Buckley appeared on Jon Stewart to promote his new book Supreme Courtship. Not to be total cynics but Buckley sure timed his party-jumping, employer offending, Tina Brown traffic-boosting, Barack Obama for President endorsement just right. (An accusation he sort of addresses in the segment.)

Christopher Buckley on Reliable Sources: ‘The Discourse has Become a Little Calcified and Sclerotic’

On this weekend’s Reliable Sources former National Review columnist (and son of its founder) Christopher Buckley discussed his decision to endorse Barack Obama in Tina Brown‘s newly launched The Daily Beast (a decision that resulted in his resignation): “How could I not write an endorsement in a publication called The Daily Beast? But the fact of the matter is I have a new column in The Daily Beast. I went to some pains in that endorsement to point out that I was not writing it for National Review so as to create — well, to use a rather right-wing word, some lebensraum, a little breathing space for National Review.”

He also discusses what his father, William F. Buckley‘s reaction might have been were he alive: “My dad was a tower of tolerance. What pup, as I used to call him, would have done in this situation was he would have devoted six pages in the next issue of “National Review” to denouncing me, and it would have made for some pretty lively discourse and good journalism.”

Buckley also got some ink devoted to him on the front page of the Times venerable Style section where he described the past year as “annus horribilis.” Watch his CNN segment after the jump.

Christopher Buckley Resigns from National Review Over Obama Endorsement

The Obama endorsement craze claims it first conservative victim! We told you earlier today that Christopher Buckley was one of a growing group of conservatives to endorse Barack Obama. He apparently did so at Tina Brown‘s newly launched The Daily Beast instead of at his regular gig on the back page of the National Review so as to avoid the kind of hate mail his colleague Kathleen Parker received when she criticized the Palin pick. Good luck with that!

The internets are tricky business. According to Buckley the hate mail found him anyway, along with the displeasure of his NR colleagues, and now via Politico comes word that Buckley has resigned from the very magazine his father founded (they apparently accepted rather briskly!).

Election Endorsements: The Media Really Does Love Barack Obama

For those of you who follow politics regularly (and at this point that probably includes anyone who’s literate) it may feel like the op-ed pages of the nation’s newspapers have been endorsing one candidate or another for the past eighteen months. However! Get ready because the real presidential endorsements have only just begun.

You may not be surprised to hear that thus far Barack Obama is leading the media love-in race. E&P is reporting that Obama “won the day” yesterday by a 17-2 margin and is currently leading overall with 28 editorial endorsements to McCain-Palin’s 11. Even the traditional conservatives have been jumping ship in droves. Gawker notes that Christopher Hitchens is the latest to join Charles Krauthammer, David Brooks, Andrew Sullivan (an early and ferocious adapter), Christopher Buckley, in giving Obama the nod.

Lunch at Michael’s: Tina Brown’s Bathroom Promise

We were expecting a celeb sighting or two since it’s Upfront time — the week the networks trot out their overpaid and underfed stars to shill for their supper — but alas, there were no signs of McDreamy or Matthew Fox anywhere. (Thankfully, we didn’t see any cavemen either.) Disappointed, we settled in at our regular perch at the bar to survey the suits and check out the regulars when our pal publicity maven Leslie Stevens appeared on the scene. A scheduling snafu left Leslie solo, so she gamely pulled up a stool and chatted up lunchtime chronicler Diane Clehane. The tireless pitchwoman told us she only had time for a quick bite because she was en route to D.C. to attend the launch party of the Onion Express, a joint venture between “America’s Finest News Source” — The Onion — and The Washington Post. Tonight’s soiree is expected to draw the likes of Christopher Hitchens (just don’t get him started talking about religion) and Christopher Buckley as well as “a bunch of politicos.” See, there really is life outside of New York.

Here’s a rundown on the rest:

Table 1. Glamour‘s Cindi Leive, Allure‘s Linda Wells, Playboy‘s Chris Napolitano and a few folks we didn’t recognize having their monthly “editor’s lunch.”

2. Ben Silverman and guests. The ubiquitous Ms. Stevens is throwing a party for the reality show guru (The Biggest Loser, The Restaurant) at the new karaoke joint Spotlight Live (we hear J.Lo has been by) on Thursday night for the crowd in town for the Upfronts. Sorry, by invite only …

3. Terry Allen Kramer and a table full of guests. (We’re told Mayor Joe Armstrong is not MIA, but simply enjoying a trip across the pond to London. Hurry back!)

4. Norman Pearlstine, sporting a military-looking buzz cut, with two equally close-cropped young gents.

5. Arnold Scassi and Parker Ladd. After witnessing Mr. Ladd take a call at the bar we’re amused to report he might be the only adult male in New York City that doesn’t own a cell phone.
