Complex Founder Tries to Bash GQ, Fails

For some reason, Marc Ecko — the founder of Complex — attempted to bash GQ on Twitter. We say attempted, because despite his declaration that Complex was “new” and GQ was “old,” he not only used the wrong Twitter handle for GQ, he got his own magazine’s handle wrong too.

Sigh. Better luck next time, Marc.

Cover Battle: Complex or Businessweek

Welcome back to another edition of FishbowlNY’s weekly Cover Battle. This round features Complex taking on Businessweek. Complex features the beautiful and talented Jhené Aiko floating in a pool. This photo, combined with the fact that it somehow will not snow today, makes us happy. Please note, it still might snow today.

Cover Battle: The New Yorker or Complex

Welcome back to another edition of FishbowlNY’s Cover Battle. This week we have The New Yorker versus Complex. The New Yorker’s latest cover — an illustration by Ivan Brunetti — features drawings of extremely busy people. In fact, just looking at this cover makes us tired. Apparently none of those tiny people have heard of Netflix Night.

Complex Moving Into Time-Life Building

Complex has its eyes on the Time-Life building. According to The New York Post, the magazine is moving its entire staff there by the end of June, taking up residence on the 35th floor. Rick Antoniello, CEO of Complex Media, told the Post the move was necessary, explaining, “We’re not a run- and-gun startup anymore.”

Speaking of 1271 6th Avenue, there are rumors that Time Inc. is going to leave it behind when it’s spun off. The company is expected to look for a place with a cheaper rent, which makes sense. But there are many egos in media, so don’t expect them to move far. Yes, that means Yonkers is probably out of the running.

Nothing against Yonkers.

NY1 Summed Up Nicely

Complex has published a great Oral History of NY1. It’s well worth a read. Here are just a few of the NY1 people who commented on the network:

Steve Paulus (VP of local news and programming); Matt Besterman (exec producer); Jamie Shupak (traffic reporter); Pat Kiernan (No explanation needed); Errol Louis (Host of Inside City Hall); Dean Meminger (criminal justice reporter); Kristen Shaughnessy (weekend anchor and reporter); Budd Mishkin (Host of One on One).

They all give some great quotes, but our favorite by far is one dished out by Action Bronson, the rapper that hails from Flushing:

I’m a fuckin’ New Yorker. Who doesn’t know about NY1? That’s the channel that goes on in the morning. If you need to know the temperature right away, before cell phones and all this shit, you go to NY1. Weather on the ones, dude—01, 11, 21, 31, 41, 51. We’re not playing games.

If NY1 doesn’t use “I’m a fuckin’ New Yorker. Who doesn’t know about NY1?” in its next ad campaign, it’s making a big mistake.

Cover Battle: The New Republic or Complex

Welcome back to another round of FishbowlNY’s Cover Battle. This week we have The New Republic versus Complex. TNR went with an excellent illustration of two birds. Or are they dolphins? If they’re dolphins they sure have short beaks. Or are those snouts? Next week on FishbowlNY: 31 Things You Need to Know About Dolphin Noses. Don’t steal that, BuzzFeed.
