Glamour Women of the Year Awards: ‘I’d Like to Thank My Mother’

Last night’s Glamour Women of the Year Awards ceremony held at Carnegie Hall was a rare thing — interesting and inspiring all at the same time (and how often can you say that?!) We’ve all heard more than once in the last twelve months that regardless of the outcome of this election this year has been all about the woman. And last night’s line-up of recipients, which included Condoleezza Rice, Tyra Banks, Maureen Chiquet (the woman who heads Chanel is from Missouri!), Kara Walker, Nicole Kidman, the Nobel Women’s Initiative, Jane Goodall, Najood Ali (the 10 yr old Yemen girl who convinced the courts to give her a divorce from her adult husband), and Hillary Clinton (two standing ovations) was an excellent representation of just that. Also perhaps a reflection of the magazine’s pull, particularly in these tough times (Condi Rice said she’s been reading since she was twelve). Also, Cindi Leive rocked the most amazing shoes of the night, just saying.

The star-studded event lived up to its glamour moniker (we joked on our way in that security was so tight it felt like the secret service was in the building…turns out they were!) and most of the recipients attended the packed dinner at the Essex House afterward — we spotted Nicole Kidman front and center with hubby Keith Urban, tiny Kate Bosworth floating about, and Harvey Weinstein “dropping in” on our way out. Later this twitter from Julia Allison turned us almost entirely green with envy. The NYT Tightens Its Belt, Adds Bono to the Masthead

Lots of New York Times news to discuss today! You may recall, way back in the early days of August before Sarah Palin was even a glimmer in John McCain‘s eye, that we told you how the NYT Co. was under increases pressure to cut its dividends (simply put: “it has to stop paying its shareholders so much money and use some of its finite cash to pay off its bonds”). Bloomberg is now reporting the company is considering doing just that, or perhaps even dropping dividends altogether(!) after “reporting a loss on severance costs and a steeper drop in advertising sales.” Keep in mind that the NYT Co. has a $1.1 billion debt and pays the controlling Ochs-Sulzberger family a $25.1 million a year dividend. Time for some belt-tightening we thinks!

But that is not all, by a long shot. Because if you were the national paper of record, as well as (by far), the best example of how a newspaper should go about transitioning to the online world, and you found yourself struggling, what would you do? Hire a celebrity for your op-ed pages, of course!

Annie explains the “monumental task” of pulling together 20 covers:

“The covers are a kind of visual chain letter, spreading the message from person to person to person. These are incredible people of our time who all have a passion for and a connection to Africa. It was important to me to really show the humanity in their faces. In a couple of cases people are actually together, like Condoleezza Rice and George W. Bush and Alicia Keys and Iman, but the reality is that with people’s schedules and availability it was not possible to shoot everyone together. So, these are more photo illustrations than photographs, but the point was to unite people for a common purpose.”

We were wondering how Condoleeza managed to block out Bono‘s death stare.

XM Subscribers Outraged Over Opie And Anthony Suspension

Opie And Anthony fans are threatening to cancel their XM subscriptions — some even talking lawsuits — after the satellite radio company suspended the shock jocks for 30 days over comments by a homeless guest about Laura Bush and Condoleezza Rice aired last week on the show.

Post-’Hos World: Opie & Anthony Suspended By XM

Radio companies — even satellite ones — appear to be tightening up in a post-Imus world. Yesterday, XM suspended shock-jocks Opie & Anthony 30 days for a homeless man’s comments about Condoleezza Rice, Laura Bush and Queen Elizabeth, aired last week on the show. The suspension follows last week’s cancellation of The Dog House with JV and Elvis show by CBS Radio for a prank phone call to a Chinese restaurant.

Opie & Anthony’s latest suspension, though, seems to’ve stemmed from comments made during yesterday’s broadcast, which appearently ticked off XM management:

“Comments made by Opie and Anthony on yesterday’s broadcast put into question whether they appreciate the seriousness of the matter. The management of XM Radio decided to suspend Opie and Anthony to make clear that our on-air talent must take seriously the responsibility that creative freedom requires of them.”

Meanwhile, Rush Limbaugh and his “Barack The Magic Negro” bits soldier on, unscathed.
