CNN Adds Rachel Crane, Cosmo Names Integrated Marketing Director

A couple moves to note today, regarding CNN and Cosmopolitan. Details are below.

  • Rachel Crane is joining CNN as a digital correspondent, focusing on pop culture and innovation. Crane comes to CNN from Bloomberg, where she served as reporter covering technology and innovation. She also served as host of Bloomberg’s Brink, a show highlighting new ideas and tech.
  • Amy Laine has been named Cosmopolitan’s integrated marketing director. Laine was most recently a partner at Hyperlaine, where she served as a consultant for publications like The Atlantic, Wired and Afar. Previously, Laine served as a marketing manager for Hearst Magazines. Laine begins March 31.

David Letterman to Leave Late Show (TVNewser)
During the taping of Thursday’s Late Show, David Letterman announced next year will be his last on the show he’s hosted for more than two decades. The news was first reported on Twitter by R.E.M. bassist Mike Mills, a guest on the show, just after 4 p.m. ET. Letterman, who turns 67 next week, signed a contract extension in October. Adweek The duration of the new deal seemed a sure sign that the clock was ticking on Letterman’s late night tenure. Two years prior to signing the extension, the host had agreed to a two-year deal. NYT Letterman said he had informed CBS president Leslie Moonves of his intention to step down from The Late Show at the end of his current contract, which has about 16 months left. A specific end date has not yet been set. Letterman is considered by many to be the most original voice in the late-night format, and Moonves has been steadfast in his assurances in recent years that he would never ask Letterman to retire, saying at one point, “You don’t do that to a television legend.” Mashable Letterman hosted Late Night on NBC from 1982 to 1993 before starting Late Show on CBS in 1993. In 2013, he surpassed Johnny Carson as the longest-running late night talk show host in television history. He has been part of more than 6,000 late-night broadcasts. USA Today It’s unclear how CBS will replace Letterman, and when, precisely. Craig Ferguson, who hosts the Letterman-produced Late Late Show, is not being considered as a replacement, insiders say, even though his contract technically promises it. Moonves is known to have been interested in The Daily Show‘s Jon Stewart over the years, but in the past Stewart has said he is not interested in a network talk show. Stewart’s Comedy Central partner Stephen Colbert is seen as a more likely candidate, and is available sooner: His contract with Comedy Central expires in December, though Stewart is free in 2015. Chelsea Handler also announced plans to leave her late-night E! show this year.

Cosmopolitan EIC: We ‘Cannot Win’ the Photoshop Game

Adweek has posted video from its recent event “A Candid Conversation With Five Women Leaders of Advertising and Media.” Among the clips is this fascinating snippet from Cosmopolitan EIC Joanna Coles.

Coles recalls that when she was at Marie Claire, no one believed her when the magazine ran a cover and photo spread of Jessica Simpson with no make-up or retouching. “They accused us of lying,” she said. “The one time we did it [no retouching], no one believed us.”

M Magazine Names Jim Windolf Editor, Cosmo and HGTV Mag Make Changes

M, Cosmopolitan and HGTV Magazine have all made staffing changes. Details are below.

  • Jim Windolf has been named editor-in-chief of M. Windolf had most recently served as the quarterly’s senior consulting editor. Windolf will continue as a contributing editor at Vanity Fair.
  • Patti Greco has been named entertainment editor of Cosmpolitan.com, a new role at the magazine. Greco comes to Cosmo from New York, where she served as a staff editor.
  • Kate English has been named HGTV Magazine’s associate publisher, marketing, another new role.English has been the magazine’s executive director, integrated marketing since it launched two years ago.

Topless Guy Livens Up Cosmo Brainstorming Session

It’s never dull at Cosmopolitan. Exhibit Z: this afternoon’s cosmo.com editorial brainstorming session, live-streamed beginning at 4 p.m. ET.

Joining six staff members – a few minutes late – was actor-model-entrepreneur CJ Richards. The Super Bowl-focused discussion had already begun, but attention soon shifted to Richards, who began by reminding that today was the coldest day in New York in many years. He then whipped off his jacket, scarf and soon, the rest of the clothing covering his top half (sweater, and maybe T-shirt underneath). From that point on, Richards sat and participated – topless.

Adweek Names Cosmo Magazine of The Year

The staffers of Cosmopolitan should be feeling great today. That is, if they’e not too hungover from celebrating their Adweek Hot List accolades. Last night Adweek announced its annual winners, and Cosmo was named Magazine of The Year; its editor, Joanna Coles, was named Editor of The Year.

Granted, Adweek’s Hot List includes an award for just about every single thing you can imagine. So if your magazine didn’t find a way to win something — Best Magazine to Read on The Toilet, Best Magazine to use When Killing a Fly, etc. — that’s sort of sad. However, everyone at Cosmo should be proud of themselves.

Cosmo Appoints Special Projects Director

Laura Brounstein has been named Cosmopolitan’s special projects director. Brounstein comes to Cosmo from Bauer Publishing, where she most recently served as editorial director for its Teen Group.

According to Cosmo, Brounstein will be responsible for “executing and generating off-the-page ideas for the brand and contributing as an editor and writer to the magazine.”

Brounstein begins November 1. She’ll report to Joanna Coles, Cosmo’s editor.
