Dan Klaidman Named Newsweek/The Daily Beast’s National Political Correspondent

Dan Klaidman, who rejoined Newsweek/The Daily Beast in early 2012, has been named national political correspondent. Klaidman originally came to Newsweek in 1996 as an investigative reporter. He also served as a managing editor of the magazine. He most recently served as a special correspondent.

“Danny is one of the best-sourced and most insightful reporters I’ve ever worked with,” wrote Tina Brown in a memo announcing the change. “We’re thrilled to be bringing his force to bear on the second Obama administration”

If we had a dollar for each time we read something good about Newsweek, we’d have about $15. However, if we had a dollar for each time we read something bad about the magazine, we’d have enough money to tolerate Plunge at the Gansevoort. Despite the plethora of bad reports about Newsweek since Tina Brown took over, each is typically sprinkled with some good. This is the world of Newsweek: Up and down all the time.

Here are the good and bad takeaways from WWD’s piece about Newsweek today.

Good:

There are people complaining, but it’s not as bad as everyone thinks. Newsweek’s International Editor, Tunku Varadarajan, said, “Yes, there are disgruntled people, but there are many, many, many more who are not disgruntled.”
People are actually coming back, including Mark Miller and Dan Klaidman.
Newsstand sales are up six percent compared to last year.

Tina Brown Taps Two Former Time Staffers To Oversee Newsweek

As the Newsweek/Daily Beast deal awaits finalization, Tina Brown is not slowing down the hiring process. The New York Post reports that Brown has turned to Steve Koepp and Arthur Hochstein to manage Newsweek while the merger is completed. Koepp has previously served as an editor at Time magazine and Hochstein was Time’s art director as well as an interim creative director at Bloomberg’s Businessweek.

Koepp and Hochstein will begin work at Newsweek while current editors Dan Klaidman and Nisid Hajari continue in their interim editor roles through the end of January. Brown plans to roll out the newly designed Newsweek/Daily Beast in April.

Newsweek/Daily Beast Deal Still In The Works

Most companies witness a slowdown in operations around the holiday season and Newsweek and The Daily Beast are no exception to the rule. After announcing plans for a merger in November the two brands have not yet finalized their partnership and, according to Keith Kelly, Newsweek owner Sidney Harman is aiming for mid-January as the date to seal the deal.

The main culprits for the delay are legal issues and paperwork, two factors that are taking their toll on the Newsweek staff. Even though they both have signed book deals with Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, interim co-editors Dan Klaidman and Nisid Hajari will remain with the magazine until the end of the month

Lunch at Michael’s: Gay Talese, John Huey and The Guys

The scene at 55th and Fifth resembled something of a men’s club today where the power suits — and ties — ruled. Media machers including Time Inc.’s editor-in-chief John Huey, ad man Jerry Della Femina and the sartorially splendid Gay Talese (who got our attention when he removed his coat and fedora to reveal an eye-catching rust velvet blazer, coordinating vest and yellow tie) broke bread with their equally powerful pals in a dining room. It should be noted, though, that Mr. Huey evened things out a bit by lunching with power gals Martha Nelson of The People Group and “People’s” style director Susan Kaufman. Hope to see more of our favorite gals (Barbara and Diane, where are you?) next week.

We’re were thrilled by how chatty the crowd was today. We made the acquaintance of tech scribe Tucker Hall, who was seated a few stools down from us at the bar, when we overheard him telling a pal that “There’s some blog on mediabistro that writes about the lunch crowd.” His lunch date, Harper Collins editor Peter Hubbard, made our day when he told us that “Lunch” is a must-read around the office. Thanks guys!!

Here’s who we spotted today:

1. Super spin meister Stu Zakim and a host of media movers and shakers who must have had a lot to talk about between bites of their burgers and fries including Business Week‘s Jon Fine (who happens to be the husband of our founder and CEO Laurel Touby), Radarmagazine.com’s Jeff Bercovici, ABC’s Jeffrey Schneider and Patrick Reilly of SIRIUS.

2. Mr. Huey with Ms. Nelson and Ms. Kaufman, who said she was dazzled by divorcee’s Reese Witherspoon‘s (she’s recently spilt from hubby Ryan Phillippe) startlingly young, hip appearance on the red carpet at the Golden Globes. We agree!

3. ‘Mayor’ Joe Armstrong — fresh off jury duty — with publishing legend Gay Talese and Newsweek‘s new number two man, Dan Klaidman. The newly minted managing editor comes from the magazine’s Washington, D.C. bureau.

4. Peter Brown & guest.

5. Designer Arnold Scassi, Parker Ladd and an unidentified friend.

6. Debbie Fine and Estee Lauder’s vice president of global communications, Sally Susman.
