Marijuana Mag Rolls First-Ever 3D Issue

A truly ground-breaking media moment is about to occur at SoCal 7-Elevens, Whole Food Markets and other alternative retailers. Tomorrow, in advance of the holiest of hemp holidays, The 420 Times will unveil its first-ever 3D issue.

This month’s issue comes with a pair of 3D glasses and features much more than just the above 3D cover. There are also photos inside that look best when wearing the specs, showing everything from a grow room to electron microscope shots of bud. Even some of the issue’s advertisers took advantage of the theme to also incorporate 3D into their ads.

Holy Smokes! Website Edges Past High Times

In less than two years, editor Dave Brian and his Burbank-directed crew have pulled off the unthinkable. They’ve rolled a bigger joint than venerable marijuana mag High Times.

FishbowlLA checked in with Brian to find out how the free monthly print publication overtook its paid subscription competitor in U.S., global, and Alexa reputation rankings. He says they have been reactive to the way people search online for marijuana news, noted the fact that over 20% of monthly visitors access the site from a mobile device, and relied on the old (but still effective) standby of e-mail newsletters.

“Our May 2011 item How To: Get a Job in Medical Marijuana sparked interest and comments from the young , old, and unemployed,” Brian says. “The other half of our stories is law enforcement, and the topic of our June print magazine.”

Marijuana Mag April Fool’s Finds Belated Taker

On Friday, the good folks at Burbank’s The 420 Times, a print and online publication that covers medical marijuana and natural healing, published an item about their new iPhone app “Dude, Don’t Bust My Grow.” Designed to alert operators of medical marijuana dispensaries whenever law enforcement folks are in the vicinity, it was also said to boast this neat add-on:

“We added a ‘Chalupa-Mode’ to the app,” said editor Dave Brian. “Not only can people see the Feds coming their way now but they can also find the nearest Taco Bell — a real bitch sometimes when you’re jonesing.”

Apparently, Tom Blair of the San Diego Union-Tribune glanced too quickly at the item to catch the above paragraph, or the fact that the app was priced on iTunes for a wink-wink $4.20, or the added notation at the very bottom of the article indicating this was all a gag. He writes up the “Dude, Don’t Bust My Grow” app news today with nary a hint that he’s in on the joke.

Expect a correction shortly.

Update – 04/08/11: We kept waiting for the correction to appear in Blair’s original column. But it turns out he acknowledged in a subsequent April 6th dispatch that indeed, the toke was on him.
