Bending the Tax Rate and Salary Cap Like Beckham

Those incredible feathery, looping cross-field passes from David Beckham to LA Galaxy teammates Landon Donovan and Robbie Keane will soon be a thing of the DVR. The MLS Cup on December 1 will officially mark the end of the Beckham Carson home field era.

On the occasion of Beckham’s imminent departure, International Herald Tribune columnist Rob Hughes reminds that the soccer star is responsible for not one but two major changes to sports league financial rules. There was the discounted foreign workers tax law enacted in Spain circa Real Madrid 20o3 (a.k.a. the Beckham Law). And an equally momentous amendment prior to the athlete’s AEG transition in 2007:

The MLS agreed to a “designated player rule” that, in effect, allowed Beckham, and then a few others, to be paid more than the rest of their teammates combined. A hallowed principle in many sports in the United States, the salary cap, was altered.

Perusing the Beckham News Briefs

While this morning’s LA Times story about the arrival of ten-foot metallic David Beckham statues near a couple of LA H&M store locations has all the facts, the headline leaves a lot to be desired. It reads: “Statues of David Beckham in his underwear go on display.

We understand this is a family newspaper, so we’re not looking for any salacious Bend It Like Beckham crotch references. (In fact, reporter Austin Knoblauch sources a variation of that territory in his final sentence.) But the LAT headline writer was definitely asleep at the wheel. Tribune sister publication Zap2it has an equally yawn-inducing headline.

Much better are the following headers from Adweek, Splash News and UK’s Evening Standard newspaper:

David Beckham to Grace Cover of UK Elle

David Beckham is a sexy soccer superstar, so it makes sense that the British Elle is putting him on its Olympics issue, due out May 30. According to the Daily Mail, the cover marks the first time a man has appeared on the front of British Elle by himself, and Beckham’s first appearance on a women’s magazine.

Lorraine Candy, Editor-in-Chief of the title, said Beckham was a perfect choice. “He is an icon and Elle is known for featuring icons on its cover,” Candy told the Daily Mail. “This is a first for us on the newsstand and I believe he is loved by men and women alike. Anyway, who doesn’t want to see a picture of one of the world’s most handsome men on the front cover of a magazine? It will be a collector’s issue.”

Calling it a collector’s issue is a bit of a stretch. Hasn’t everyone seen Beckham half naked by now? We’ll tell you what would make it a keepsake: If Beckham finally dished on what he really thinks about “Spice World.”

Soccer Columnist Yellow Cards French Media

Sports Illustrated senior writer Grant Wahl has a solid look today at the recent international media fuss over David Beckham. Although the 36-year-old MLS star and LA Galaxy have yet to re-sign on the dotted line, all indications are that the master of the feather-touch pass plans on remaining stateside rather than joining Paris St. Germain.

The last bullet point in Wahl’s blog item asks, ‘How did the French media get the story so wrong?’ He suggests that both Beckham’s reps and Galaxy owner Tim Leiweke probably had something to do with it:

Some really good French outlets got caught with their culottes down… One big reason is that it was in Beckham’s interest to encourage the speculation and receive as big an offer as possible from PSG so that he would get the best offer possible from the Galaxy. At the same time, Leiweke gave no access to the French media, which underestimated Leiweke’s ability to get things done. Big mistake…

Media Mogul Monopolizes MLS Final

FishbowlLA is still in awe of last night’s LA Galaxy 2011 championship win over the Houston Dynamo and picture-perfect winning play from David Beckham to Robbie Keane to Landon Donovan. Even more impressive is the way team owner Philip Anschutz (pictured) was able to pull off the equivalent of passing to himself to score.

Has there ever been a situation like this in a modern era U.S. professional team sports final? Since Anschutz owns 100% of the Galaxy and 50% of the Dynamo, he was guaranteed a spot on the winner’s stage, no matter what. To accept a trophy… that bears his name. As Forbes “SportsMoney” blogger Adrian Melville reminds, Anschutz’s MLS monopoly runs deeper:

The Beckham brand, carefully managed by AEG, single-handedly sold 600,000 jerseys in his first [MLS] year, drastically increased season ticket sales at home, and played on the road in front of crowds that in some cases were four times the host team’s average. And the so-called ‘Beckham effect’ will continue even if last night was his last game in MLS.

Facebook Fans Chime In on David Beckham Tattoo

The media is catching up today to a December 12th Facebook photo post by LA Galaxy sometimes-star David Beckham. The picture shows Beckham at the starting point of six new hours of emblazoning by Mark Mahoney of Sunset Strip’s Shamrock Social Club.

At press time, just under 13,000 Facebook users had indicated that they “liked” the photo, though it’s not quite clear what Beckham had done. Some of the many comments are priceless. Here are two of our favorites:

Rodolfo Butial: Hi David Beckham, you’re a man that every girl, gays are dreaming of. Just looking at your sexy billboard I nearly missed the train, AMAZING!

Kathleen Angel Heffron: Just imagine when you’re 80. How will they look with too many?

UK Tabloid Spoils Tom Cruise’s Midnight Fun

Just when actor Tom Cruise and best friend-neighbor David Beckham had figured out a way to avoid the troublesome paparazzi, along comes UK’s The Mirror in the rear view mirror to scuttle those plans.

Via a Sunday, December 12th report that is now leaving track marks across the showbiz gossip mill, reporter Dean Piper breathlessly shared the Scientologist’s Mulholland congregation plans:

I can reveal they have formed the Midnight Boys Bike Club, and a whole host of A-list bikers have been invited to join them for midnight cruises through the Hollywood Hills…

My source says: “The boys love to ride. They’re out as often as they can. At midnight they can get away with cruising around in a group and seeing the sights of LA without a zillion paparazzi chasing them around.

Andrew Morton Says Tom Cruise #2 at Scientology

tomcruisescientolAP_228x469.jpg

British biographer Andrew Morton has the “church” of L. Ron in a frenzy with his new biography of Tom Cruise. The book claims:

Cruise is the # 2 guy, after David Miscavige,

daughter by Katie Holmes “conceived like Rosemary’s Baby”,

Cruise’s next mission is to recruit David Beckham,

Nicole Kidman “feared blackmail” over sex tapes made with Scientologists,

Idle thought: Kidman should have feared blackmail over Eyes Wide Shut.

The book comes out in the US on the 15th of this month, but won’t appear in the UK, due to the stringent libel laws. Paulette Cooper has been on the receiving end of such lawsuits.

And Dana Goodyear goes inside the Celebrity Centre.

Will Posh Be More Popular Than Becks? Victoria Beckham Wins Young Viewers

Front_17July.jpg

David Beckham has an “official blog“, and it’s as blah as might be expected.

He’s been here a week, and already calling in sick? What does he think this is–an internship? Or does Galaxy not want to risk their high-priced show pony in an exhibition game?

Victoria Beckham’s TV show premiered last night, to little or no acclaim, winning its time slot with the 18-49 group, but NBC still finished in 2nd for the night.

Alessandra Stanley was inspired to actually toss off a quip:

Mrs. Beckham is oddly unsensual on television; she somehow takes the sin out of synergy.

Can this showbiz marriage survive success? Check out X17′s video of the pair–he sure looks cranky.
