Hearst Newspapers Fires Reporter for Repeated Fabrication

The New Canaan News, published by Hearst Newspaper subsidiary Hearst Connecticut Media Group, has fired Paresh Jha for fabricating names and quotes in at least 25 stories. According to Poynter, the paper removed the stories containing the made up sources, and David McCumber, the editorial director for Hearst Connecticut Media Group, issued an apology for a “gross violation of standards.”

“We have found 25 stories written by Paresh Jha over the last year and a half that contain quotes from nonexistent sources,” McCumber said in a statement on the New Canaan News’ site.

Jha’s works were discovered when editors were fact checking names that seemed to be spelled oddly. When confronted, Jha admitted his wrongdoing.

The paper is now investigating every story Jha wrote during his time there.
