Maria Shriver To Serve As Editor For O, The Oprah Magazine Poetry Issue

Fresh off her eight-year run as the First Lady of California, Maria Shriver is going to see how she can fare in the print world as the first-ever guest editor for April’s edition of O, The Oprah Magazine. Shriver will oversee the “Express Yourself” – themed poetry issue and work with O’s editorial staff to develop ideas to commemorate National Poetry Month. The issue will debut on newsstands on March 15 and showcase work from some of the world’s premier poets, actors, athletes, musicians, and writers. Contributors will include actress Demi Moore and former boxing superstar Mike Tyson who will both share poems that resonate deeply with them. Shriver discussed the value of poetry and its effect on her life.

I try to mark the occasion of each new day by reading something inspirational. Sometimes the inspiration comes from a book of tips or quotations, but it usually comes from a book of poetry. Poetry can help us through hard times and bring us closer to our joy. Poetry can be prayerful and somber or irreverent and playful, but what runs through all poetry is the search for meaning and understanding that connects us together. While a poem may bring us deep personal meaning, it becomes more meaningful when we share it with others. That is why we’re asking readers to submit their own cherished poems. Poetry has had such a powerful influence on my life, and I’m thrilled to be celebrating National Poetry Month with the readers of O, The Oprah Magazine.

Journalists, Celebs Swarm DC For WHCD Weekend

Nothing gets New Yorkers to jump on a bus faster than a party, especially a party where the guest of honor is the Barack Obama. For the second time this year, journalists and celebrities flocked to the Beltway to party it up with the prez–this time for the White House Correspondents’ Dinner on Saturday.

Our colleagues over at FishbowlDC have extensive coverage of the weekend in the capitol. They hit all the fashionable pre-parties including ones hosted by The National Journal and The Atlantic and CBS. They hung out with celebs like Connie Britton, Ellen Burstyn, Tim Daly, Dana Delany, Kerry Washington and Rachael Leigh Cook at the Creative Coalition’s Thursday night fete and spied Ashton Kutcher, Demi Moore, Rashida Jones, Jon Bon Jovi, Owen Wilson, Jason Bateman, Natalie Portman, Julia Louis Dreyfus, Brad Hall, Bradley Cooper, Amy Poehler, Dennis Leary, Glenn Close and BJ Novak at the Vanity Fair/Bloomberg after-party.

Of course, FBDC correspondents were also at the main event. If you missed it, you can watch Obama’s full (and pretty funny) speech here. Our favorite part of the President’s speech was when he teased Rahm Emanuel with a Mother’s Day jab: “He’s not used to saying the word day after ‘mother.’”

E!’s Love Ride Curse

The reported Justin Timberlake-Cameron Diaz split — the first big one of 2007 — has celebrity media outlets in a tizzy. You know who else is in a tizzy? E! gossipist Michael Malkin, who appears to’ve been counting down the minutes since Britney dropped K-Fed to write this:

Perhaps Timberlake and Diaz are the latest victims of E!’s Love Ride curse. If Timberlake and Diaz are over, that means three of the eight couples featured in the new series have gone kaput. With Pamela Anderson and Kid Rock along with Britney Spears and Kevin Federline over, who’s left to worry about the curse? Brangelina, TomKat, Jennifer Garner and Ben Affleck, Demi Moore and Ashton Kutcher, and Sarah Jessica Parker and Matthew Broderick.

Three of eight, huh? That’s not exactly Madden Curse territory.
