Back in the Game After NYT Buyout, Sportswriter Recalls Shaq Encounter

Since taking a buyout from the New York Times in early 2010, Joe Lapointe continued to teach journalism, freelanced and toiled briefly for Keith Olbermann‘s Current TV show. Now, per his introductory MLive Media Group dispatch, it’s time to get back into the sportswriting game full-time.

Lapointe, who came to the Times after 11 years with the Detroit Free Press, is thrilled to be back in his native state. He says that when he looks back on his decades of NYC reporting, two folks stand out – Yogi Berra and Shaquille O’Neal:

The Shaq thing happened on a sunny day as I walked through Times Square back to work after lunch. I saw O’Neal signing autographs as he emerged from a restaurant and walked down the sidewalk…

Retired Anchorman Mort Crim Stays Classy in Midst of Barrage of Media Attention

It’s been fun to read the media coverage of 78-year-old former Philadelphia and Detroit TV news anchor Mort Crim. Thanks to a recent Rolling Stone interview with Will Ferrell, the man who helped inspire not the mustache or the “Stay classy” catchphrase but rather the smooth, authoritative delivery has been back in the limelight, culminating with Sunday’s New York City premiere of Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues.

Per Julie Miller of the Detroit Free Press, Crim had a great line ready when he finally, for the first time, met Ferrell at this weekend’s NYC premiere:

“I walked up to him at the party that went on afterward,” Crim said Monday from New York. “He recognized me. I stuck my hand out and said, ‘Will, it’s nice for you to get to meet me.’ ”

O’Reilly ‘Decides’ to Bully a Cartoonist

Don’t Muslim extremists want to take out cartoonists? Isn’t that their deal? Isn’t Bill O’Reilly against Muslim extremists? Then why is he going after a cartoonist for being critical of him? He’s out to intimidate Detroit Free Press cartoonist Mike Thompson for the above cartoon.

Rob Tornoe at Cagle Cartoons writes:

“Believe me when I tell you the far left is seething over all of this NPR stuff,” O’Reilly said. “The blow back has begun. Take a look at this political cartoon in the Detroit Free Press by Mike Thompson featuring me wearing ‘Obama equals Hitler’ stuff.”

“Please don’t sink to his level but can you let him know what you think,” O’Reilly said after giving out Thompson’s e-mail address on air. “Keep it respectful but don’t be like Mike.”

O’Reilly is a bully and a coward. It’s a cartoonist’s job to poke fun at O’Reilly and it’s O’Reilly’s job not to issue a Fox News fatwa every time he’s criticized. How shallow and petty can you be? Man up, O’Reilly.
