A Lot of Media People Partied Last Night

The whirlwind surrounding the New Republic continued last night as Chris Hughes, editor-in-chief and publisher of the magazine, threw a party to celebrate the glossy. Since those in the publishing business love nothing more than to hobnob with people just like them, there was a slew of big names in attendance.

Now you might be saying “I don’t care about yet another event full of media people congratulating themselves for being themselves” but we know you do! Otherwise you wouldn’t be reading this. So allow us to give you what you want, a list of people who went to Hughes’ shindig, via The Huffington Post.

2010 Polk Award Winners Announced

Long Island University just announced the winners of 2010′s George Polk Award in Journalism, and there are quite a few local recipients. Below are just some of the many journalists who were honored:

Bill Keller Comments on Recent Losses

In the last 10 days The New York Times has seen several senior editors and writers take jobs elsewhere, and at a certain point you have to wonder if the Gray Lady is starting to sweat. John Koblin of WWD got Bill Keller, Executive Editor of the paper, to comment on losing the Op-Ed Editor (David Shipley), the Business section Editor (Tim O’Brien) a Middle East correspondent (Dexter Filkins), a senior tech writer (Ashlee Vance), and The New York Times Magazine Food Editor (Christine Muhlke), all within a short time. Keller attempts to be as nonchalant as possible:

We’ve had raids before, and every case is its own thing. If there’s a theme to the recent departures, I think it’s that now the recruiters are less likely to be traditional competitors — WaPo, LAT, WSJ. Now the big-money offers come from a newer competitive set — HuffPo, Bloomberg, etc. — that are suddenly investing in, pardon the expression, content. It may represent a recognition that aggregation isn’t everything.

Try as he might, it’s easy to pick up on the bitterness in Keller’s comment. It sounds like the losses might finally be catching up with him and the Times. Especially when O’Brien, who is going to the Huffington Post, offers up his reason for leaving the paper after so many years:

We’re all standing in the middle of this digital tsunami that’s washing across the journalism landscape.

Let’s hope Keller has a lifeboat.

Filkins heads to The New Yorker

Dexter Filkins, Middle East correspondent for The New York Times, is leaving for a similar position at The New Yorker. According to WWD, Filkins will not be limited to just that area of the globe. David Remnick, editor at The New Yorker, says in the report, “I’m sure that he will get his fill of Afghanistan and Pakistan, but I’d also be very surprised if he didn’t travel far and wide—whether that’s the Middle East or Africa or India.”

Filkins will report to features director Daniel Zalewski.

Times Magazine Editor Marzorati: ‘Who is Going to Foot the Bill?’

Marzorati talks about standing in line behind a man who is immersed in reading a long Dexter Filkins article from that week’s Magazine, which leads to a discussion of just how much these long form articles cost to produce.

What I am also conveying to you, I think you are sensing, is that that guy with the Blackberry reading Dexter Filkins‘s piece on a tiny screen on a lunch line really got under my skin…On the other hand, he WAS reading the piece, wasn’t he?
