Is HGTV Magazine In The Works?

With the success of Food Network Magazine and the loss of shelter titles like Domino in the past year, it sort of comes as no surprise that Hearst would be in talks with Scripps-owned lifestyle channel HGTV to launch a new magazine.

New York magazine’s Daily Intel blog reports today that Hearst prez Cathie Black is hoping to launch the shelter magazine, citing unnamed sources within the magazine publisher. Hearst already publishes Food Network Magazine, tied to Scripps’ popular foodie channel, which launched in late 2008 with its first paid issue this past summer — so it doesn’t seem like it would be too difficult to do the same thing with HGTV, following the Food Network Magazine model.

Now the question is: would you read HGTV Magazine?

Condé Nast’s Dead Titles May See New Life In Licensing Deals

Whether its digital versions of its magazines or partnerships with e-commerce sites it’s clear Condé Nast is on the hunt for new sources of revenue.

Today’s report in Mediaweek adds that Condé may be taking it one step further in seeking a new life for its now-defunct titles, Cookie, Domino and Gourmet, in the form of things like branded kitchen appliances. In this respect, execs have been reportedly telling staffers to look to rival publisher Meredith Corp. for inspiration; the Midwestern company has been pumping out Better Homes & Gardens-branded products for years.

But, of course, don’t expect any products connected to Condé Nast brands to cheapen its namesake –that’s a fear Si Newhouse has always had, which has kept the publisher out of licensing deals before. Thoughtfully chosen, high-end partnerships are probably where this company will end up, much like last month’s tie-in with Vogue and e-commerce site Gilt Groupe. But even if Condé can squeeze some money out of its dead titles’ brand names, those products can’t make up for the magazines we miss so much.

Condé Nast’s Cultural Shift –Mediaweek

FishbowlNY’s 2009 Lists: A Timeline Of Magazine Closings

It’s been a tough year for the publishing industry, and magazines in particular have had it rough. Every major publisher has had to shutter at least one of its titles, and some of our favorite glossies have gone to that great magazine rack in the sky.

While it would take forever to list all the over 400 magazines that have folded this year, we here at FishbowlNY put together a timeline of some of the bigger names that were shuttered this year. The bad news? It looks like in the last six months of the year the number of titles snowballed. Here’s hoping that 2010 looks a lot brighter.

After the jump, our timeline

FishbowlNY Readers Respond: Gourmet Saddest Closing in 2009

Last week we asked readers, “What print title will you miss the most” after the year full of closures?

The response was indisputable: Gourmet magazine, the award-winning epicurean title published by Condé Nast that was closed along with three other magazines in October, was far and away your number one choice, coming in with 28 percent of your votes.

Coming in second was Domino, also a Condé title, while Portfolio and the recently shuttere demise of Editor & Publisher jostled for points with nine and eight percent of your votes, respectively.

Regional papers like The Washington Blade, The Baltimore Examiner, and The Rocky Mountain News apparently only affected those living where the paper was distributed, since they got the least amount of votes, although ironically in that same pile is Fortune Small Business, which only two percent of FishbowlNY readers were sad to see go.

FishbowlNY’s 2009 Lists: New York Media’s Biggest Business Decisions

New York is home to some of the biggest media companies in the country, like Condé Nast, The New York Times Co., News Corp., Hearst and Time Warner, just to name a few.

This year, those companies were imperiled, struggling to survive like many other companies around the world. But as print media disputed declarations that its days were numbered, these once-great companies that made their money from print pubs were fighting hard to keep their heads above water. In order to do that they made some decisions — like bringing in new investors, closing publications and selling them off. It was in no way a big year for media deals, but there were a few. Below, our list of the biggest business stories to come out of the New York media world this year.

Bloomberg LP Buys BusinessWeek

After seeking a buyer for BusinessWeek for most of the fall, publisher McGraw-Hill finally cut a deal with Bloomberg LP, which snapped up the magazine in October. The result? Bloomberg BusinessWeek, a new vision of the mag that has a new editor and a smaller staff.

After the jump, Carlos Slim invests in the Times, classical music and the Comcast-NBCU deal.

Welcome To FishbowlNY’s Best Of Lists Of 2009

As the year comes to a close, we couldn’t resist taking a look back at all the great things that the media industry covered and produced, all the people who rose to prominence, maintained their perch atop the heap or had dramatic falls, and all the events that were covered faithfully and at length on the pages of our favorite newspapers and magazines and on computer screens across the city.

For better or worse, 2009 was a year that won’t easily be forgotten by those in the New York media world. It started with a bang: Barack Obama‘s inauguration, which gave us all hope of something better to come.

But for all that hope, we fear that for those in our industry, 2009 will be remembered for all those things lost. Popular publications like Domino and Gourmet published their last issues (and we’re still waiting to hear about what’s in store for Editor & Publisher) and thousands lost their jobs industry-wide. We also lost some big names in the industry, like Walter Cronkite and Dominick Dunne, to name just two.

As we head towards 2010, and a brand new decade, we’re cheered by the fact that our industry is started to show some signs of recovery. After a crushing 2008, 2009 became the year of “flat is the new growth.” We’ve already sunk to new lows, so any growth is promising, even if we’ll never reach the soaring heights in terms of the ad sales and employee counts of earlier this decade. Growth is our only option.

We’re happy to say goodbye and good riddance to 2009. But as we look to the future, let’s take a moment to remember all that happened this year — for better or worse. Over the next few days, we’ll be compiling what we think were the biggest moments in New York media this year. Plug in those Christmas lights, pour yourself some eggnog, and settle in for a recap of the year that was.

What Titles Were You Sad To Lose In 2009?

It hasn’t been the easiest year for print journalism. Crain’s New York Business reported Friday that 367 magazines have been axed in the last 12 months, with 64 going online-only, according to preliminary numbers from online database Mediafinder.com. (In October, Mediafinder said 383 had already closed up shop during the first nine months for the year).

According to The Business Insider, by July over 105 newspapers received similar treatment. Many more have had to scale back or go to an almost entirely digital format to survive.

In early October, Condé Nast took a particularly brutal hit with the shuttering of four titles: Gourmet, Cookie, Modern Bride, and Elegant Bride. And those closures came months after Condé folded Domino and Portfolio earlier in the year.

Still, it could have been worse…The New York Times is still around, despite some pessimistic predictions, right? So we here at FishbowlNY would like to hear from our readers: which closing affected you the most? Feel free to add your own to our list, and remember, we’re sticking to print publications (RIP Jossip.com) that disappeared in 2009, not including any that went online-only. And pass it along to your friends — we’ll be taking your answers into consideration next week, when we feature some year-end lists handpicked by the FishbowlNY editors. What can we say, it’s that time of year.

“Today” Show Lifestyle Contributor Named Woman’s Day Editor-in-Chief

Elizabeth Mayhew, a lifestyle expert most well-known for her appearances on the “Today” show, has been named VP, editor in chief, brand content of Hachette Filipacchi‘s Woman’s Day Group.

Starting January 4, Mayhew (right) will take over for the current top editor of Woman’s Day, Jane Chesnutt, who is set to become a special consultant for the Woman’s Day brand in the new year.

Hachette executives said the transition was part of a succession plan outlined by Tina Brown (yes, THE Tina Brown) who was brought on as a consultant to help with the selection process. “Tina Brown was the perfect consultant for the search,” said Carlos Lamadrid, SVP and chief brand officer of the Woman’s Day Group. “She has a classic content background, but also has a fantastic knowledge of marketing and new media.”

Mayhew seems like the ideal candidate for the position. With more than a decade of lifestyle editing experience, she has contributed not only to “Today” but Real Simple and House Beautiful. And with shelter magazines folding left and right (RIP Domino and Hachette’s own Metropolitan Home) this women’s title could benefit from an infusion of lifestyle input from someone who has spent her career focused on the category. We can’t wait to see what Mayhew does with Woman’s Day.

Elle Decor Raises Rate Base, Expands Ad Staff

Who said the shelter category is dead? After finishing the year as the leader in ad sales for the category, Elle Decor said today that it was raising its rate base by 10 percent — from 500,000 to 550,000 — starting with its March 2010 issue. The magazine said it will deliver an average circulation of 588,000 through the first half of next year.

The Hachette Filipacchi pub also expanded its ad sales team, promoting Matthew Talomie to the position of advertising director and appointing Linda Tullio, formerly of the recently shuttered Metropolitan Home, New York manager for Elle Decor.

“Matthew has been a creative, resourceful member of our staff for the last two years; this new role will allow him to contribute even more to our success,” said Elle Decor publisher Barbara Friedmann. “Linda’s 11 years with Metropolitan Home have made her an invaluable resource; this new position allows her to share her expertise.”

And although Elle Decor nabbed the top spot in ad pages in the shelter category — for the first time in its 20-year history — its success is no doubt related to the closure of other shelter mags like Domino, Southern Accents and Metropolitan Home, whose “highest-quality subscribers” have been added to Elle Decor‘s readership, resulting in the rate base increase, the magazine said today.

Magazine Deathwatch: Budget Travel

Will Budget Travel be the next title to go the way of Domino and so many other magazines this year?

That’s the sad news being reported by New York Magazine‘s Daily Intel, which claims that the magazine, which is owned by Newsweek publisher Washington Post Co., is already clearing out. (Update: We received word from a Newsweek spokesman that Budget Travel is not folding. Read the full update here) The reported closure is likely due to rapidly declining ad revenue, something many magazines have been experiencing. Said Daily Intel:

“The company had a 33 percent drop in revenue for their magazine division in the most recent quarter, compared to the third quarter last year — but they attributed it publicly to losses in ad revenue at Newsweek.”

Our sister blog MediaJobsDaily adds that, if the magazine is closing up shop today, January’s issue may be its last: “staff were in the midst of closing ad sales for February when ‘suddenly told to hold on the usually tight closing date.’”

Know anything? Send us an email or leave a tip in the box on the right.

UPDATE: A Newsweek spokesman tell us that Budget Travel lives on.

Another Shake Up At Condé Nast: Details Publisher Out

After yesterday’s dark day at Condé Nast, with four magazines closing and one publisher from a shuttered pub getting reassigned, we were not surprised to hear today that Details publisher Steven Deluca is leaving his post.

A Condé publicist confirmed the move, noting that Bill Wackermann, Glamour‘s publisher, will now oversee the men’s magazine as well.

The company is not making any other statements, but as The New York Observer points out:

“Details has long been on a short-list of magazines that could potentially be eliminated, but was thrown a life line this year. It’ll be up to Mr. Wackermann — who was named the publishing director of Domino only weeks before it was eliminated — to try to make it a viable business.”

Women’s Mag Editors Meet To Discuss Launching Online Publications

On Monday, mediabistro.com is holding its annual event for senior level women’s magazine and online editors. Every year the invite-only event brings together women working in the industry to swap stories and compare experiences. Its panels have previously featured editors in chief like Janice Min and Cindi Leive.

But this year, due to the significant changes that have occurred in the past year in the media and magazine worlds, the event is welcoming high profile editors who have left print publications to launch online publications — with a few representing this growing group by speaking on a panel at the event.

The event, which will include a networking cocktail hour with the panel held afterward over dessert, will feature panelists Caroline Little, the CEO of Guardian North America; Caroline Miller, the co-founder and editor-in-chief of Newser; Nicole Stagg, founding editor of Hearst‘s new beauty focused Web site RealBeauty.com; Jennifer Salant, VP of business development at Glam Media and Michelle Adams, a former editor at the now-defunct Domino who recently launched online shelter and lifestyle magazine, Lonny.

The whole event will be emceed by comedienne Sara Benincasa, who gained national notorteity last year thanks to her Sarah Palin impersonations. Benincasa will keep panelists on track with discussions about current projects, the challenges of online content, the benefits of leading an online pub, incorporating multimedia and what all of these new digital publications mean for print editors’ futures.

Attendees will also be encouraged to discuss pressing topics with tablemates, thanks to discussion topics provided at each table. “It’s something we do every year and everyone really likes it,” explained Carmen Scheidel, director of education, events and multimedia content at Mediabistro, who planned the event. “It’s like an ice breaker that’s not corny.”

Between the cocktails, dessert and free-flowing discussion, it sounds like everyone has lots of fun at these events, year after year. Don’t believe us? Check out some pictures from last year.

Although the event is closed to the public, it’s not to late for you to grab a seat. Senior level magazine or online editors can email mediabistro’s events department for ticket information.

Dwell Publisher Michela O’Connor Abrams Gives Advice About Building A Community

Strong media brands — like shelter and design brand Dwell — are managing the weather the economic storm by diversifying their content and building a strong and loyal community.

In an interview today on mediabistro.com, Dwell‘s president and publisher Michela O’Connor Abrams — a veteran of high technology and business magazines who joined Dwell at the outset in 2002 — described how she helped attract and build the incredible Dwell community:

“If I had learned anything from working at high-tech and business publications it was this: You serve a community, and you should endeavor to know everything about that community — and I mean everything — no matter what your topic is. Like what kind of running shoes they wear, and scotch they drink, and vacations they take, and where they take them, and what airline they like to fly, and cars they drive; the whole psychographic profile. And then and only then could you really understand how to attract a community and make the most of it on any number of platforms. So we literally drew the model into the business plan that had the Dwell community that we call design-seekers, who are professionals and consumers, in the middle.”

O’Connor Abrams also talked about where she saw Dwell fitting in among other media brands, whether folding Domino was a good idea and what the future holds for the medium.

“In 2002, believe me, everybody in New York, all the agencies and clients, said to me, ‘Call me when your circulation is at a quarter million and call me again when you’re at 500,000, and we’ll work with you then.’ That has changed dramatically. I didn’t give in to that, because I knew it was the wrong thing to do for our model. But the larger media companies did do that. And in order to maintain those circ levels, they did things like charge 50 cents an issue and $3.50 on the newsstand, so when advertising came down, there was nothing to rely on…The reason I believe that print will be here a long time is that we do have a lot of intelligent people in this industry who now realize the folly in chasing an ad base, and they’re now cutting rate bases, as you see.”
