LA Media Wake Up to Some Grim News: The Death of Clippers Owner Donald Sterling’s Son Scott

The first official news shift of the new year has taken a sudden and very sad turn for local beat reporters after it was confirmed that a man found dead at a Malibu residence is Scott Sterling, 32-year-old son of Clippers owner Donald Sterling.

Outlets such as ABC 7 above, CBS LA, NBC LA, KFI AM 640 and KNX 1070 News Radio are all being very careful to highlight that the cause of death will only be confirmed through autopsy. But LA County Sheriff’s officials have indicated Sterling may indeed have died from an overdose.

Clippers Win Streak Sparks Momentous Locker Room Visit

The last time the Los Angeles Clippers won eleven straight NBA games, they were called the Buffalo Braves. So it’s no surprise that after Wednesday’s record-tying 11th victory over the New Orleans Hornets at Staples, some unusual activity took place in the locker room of the local NBA franchise not debilitated by a Steve Nash injury.

Per Arash Markazi‘s report on ESPN.com:

Clippers owner Donald Sterling walked into the room with an entourage of about 10 friends who normally occupy the center courtside seats at home games. It was the first time Sterling has entered the Clippers’ locker room this season and the first time many of the new players on the team had even met him.

Rejoice, Clipper Nation: ‘Clipper Darrell’ is Back

All is right again with Clipper Nation.

Darrell Bailey is back as “Clipper Darrell.” The Los Angeles Clippers super fan posted the following update Monday night:

It is with great enthusiasm and humility that I can officially report my return as “Clipper Darrell.” As a fan I am truly sorry and apologize for any inconvenience this incident may have caused. It was never my intention to create a distraction fueling a media uproar. However, I am overwhelmed by the outpouring of love and support I received, over the past week, when my status with the Clipper’s was in question. I had a cordial and productive meeting with Clipper management and we have a clear and precise understanding of my role. We will now work together to support OUR TEAM and continue the effort in bringing a WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP to CLIPPER NATION!

Former LA Clipper Baron Davis Suffers from a Rather Painful Affliction

Fun news from the Charlotte Observer today, who reported that former Clippers point guard (and current New York Knick) Baron Davis is suffering from an extremely painful case of “herniated dick.” Ouch.

Somewhere, Donald Sterling and his girlfriends are kicking themselves for getting rid of Davis before they could spy on his new affliction in the shower.

Bill Plaschke Takes On Donald’s Sterling’s ‘Black History Month’ Ad

Finally, someone at the LA Times had the guts to stand up and say the obvious: Clippers owner Donald Sterling‘s ads in their paper are ridiculous and even offensive. In his most recent column, Times‘ sportswriter Bill Plaschke takes Sterling to task for his Sunday ad in the paper, which purports to celebrate Black History Month by allowing 1,000 “underprivileged” kids in to tonight’s Clippers game for free.

Writes Plaschke:

Is Donald Sterling saying that the only underprivileged children are black?

The other problem is the date of the “Black History Month” giveaway, which is March 2 against Houston. If you are going to honor that month, get the right month. For the last 35 years, Black History Month has been celebrated in February. …

The Donald Sterling PR Trainwreck Continues

Wow. Yet another misadventure in self-promotion for Clippers owner Donald Sterling. This ad appeared in this Sunday’s LA Times. Really Donald Sterling? You want to celebrate Black History Month in March? And you want to sully your star player’s image by sticking your smarmy mug next to his in an advertisement? AND you somehow want to let in 1,000 underprivileged children for free, without providing any information on how that will work. Can’t wait to find out tomorrow night.

Donald Sterling Taking Out Ads in the New York Times: He’s Gonna Need ‘Em

Perhaps sensing that bad news was about to break about his certain predilection for turning the post-game showers of his black basketball players into a spectator sport, Clippers owner Donald Sterling took out some…well, Donald Sterling advertisements in the New York Times last week.

Sterling has purchased similar ads in the LA Times for years, which the LA Weekly‘s Patrick Range McDonald has called him out for repeatedly. Again, McDonald caught this one too.

Clippers Owner Racks Up Another Flagrant Foul

It takes a very special kind of misguided rich-white-guy entitlement to slam dunk sexism and racism in one fell swoop. But Clippers owner Donald Sterling has shown that he possesses that specialness, in spades.

Via inestimable ESPN.com basketball chronicler J.A. Adande comes this absolutely reprehensible new nugget from the legal depositions of former team executive Elgin Baylor:

“Players Sam Cassell (pictured), Elton Brand and Corey Maggette complained to me that Sterling would bring women into the locker room after games, while the players were showering, and make comments such as, ‘Look at those beautiful black bodies.’ I brought this to Sterling’s attention, but he continued to bring women into the locker room.”

Clippers Owner Donald Sterling Heckles His Own Point Guard

Los Angeles Clippers owner and generally awful human being Donald Sterling has some new antics underway. Namely, sitting at courtside and heckling his own players during games. Clippers point guard Baron Davis, who Sterling is paying $13 million this year, is the main recipient of Sterling’s jeers.

Yahoo!’s Mark J. Spears witnessed Sterling in action over the weekend and gives us a sample:

– “Why are you in the game?”

– “Why did you take that shot?”

– “You’re out of shape!”

Sterling “started getting a lot more vocal during the second half of last season,” a team source told Spears. “He never had done that before at games. Baron’s his pet project. He absolutely hates Baron. He wants to get his money back.

Keep it classy Donald.

Another Sad Day for Clippers Fans

At what point, if you’re a fan of the Los Angeles Clippers, do you throw up your hands and holler, “I give up!” Those who follow the town’s other NBA franchise are a hardy bunch, still led presumably by celeb season ticket holder Billy Crystal. But even he may be hard-pressed to keep cheering them on after the latest developments.

In what is just the beginning of a media whirlwind, other outlets are starting to pick up on a 2009 deposition obtained by the LA Times that alleges several instances of racist comments by team owner Donald Sterling. According to plaintiff Elgin Baylor, Sterling once reacted to the prospect of Jim Brewer as head coach with the affirmation that he’d “like to have a white Southern coach coaching poor black players.”
