YouTube Ordered to Take Down Anti-Muslim Film (The Associated Press / The Big Story)
A U.S. appeals court ordered YouTube on Wednesday to take down an anti-Muslim film that sparked violent riots in parts of the Middle East and death threats to the actors. The decision by a divided three-judge panel of the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in San Francisco reinstated a lawsuit filed against YouTube by an actress who appeared briefly in the 2012 video that led to rioting and deaths because of its negative portrayal of the Prophet Muhammad. U.S. News & World Report A trailer promoting the film was blamed for murderous rampages in Muslim-majority countries in 2012 and was initially cited by some U.S. officials as the cause of the Sept. 11, 2012, attack that killed U.S. ambassador Christopher Stevens in Benghazi, Libya. Time The appeals court found that the copyright of one of the stars of the video had been infringed upon because the actress, Cindy Lee Garcia, agreed to appear in something other than what was produced. The film, entitled Innocence of Muslims, depicted the prophet Mohammed as a liar and a child molester. “Garcia’s performance was used in a way that she found abhorrent and her appearance in the film subjected her to threats of physical harm and even death,” chief judge Alex Kozinski wrote for the majority court. The Verge It’s well established that most people involved in Innocence of Muslims had no idea they were appearing in a diatribe against Islam. Garcia was paid $500 for a bit part in sword and sandals movie Desert Warrior, but she later found her footage had been edited for the new film and overdubbed with one of the most controversial lines: “Is your Mohammed a child molester?”

In Year-End Message of Gratitude, Robin Roberts Thanks Longtime Girlfriend (TVNewser)
Robin Roberts surprised her Facebook followers Sunday afternoon in an end-of-year post. She came out publicly for the first time, mentioning her longtime girlfriend Amber Laign. Roberts has been out to her family, friends and co-workers for years, but this is the first time she’s publicly acknowledged her sexuality. People “I am grateful for my entire family, my longtime girlfriend, Amber and friends as we prepare to celebrate a glorious new year together,” she wrote. Laign, a San Francisco Bay-area native, is a licensed massage therapist and has a private practice specializing in patients recovering from injuries. They have been together for 10 years after meeting through mutual friends. Variety Roberts isn’t the first Good Morning America personality to come out. Before leaving the show, weatherman Sam Champion led the way in October 2012, and the GMA anchors, Roberts included, attended his wedding in December of that year. BuzzFeed / Entertainment ABC News issued a statement of support: “We love Robin and Amber, who we have all known for a long time. We were so touched by Robin’s Facebook message and so thankful for all the loving support she has in her life.”

Cartoonist Don Asmussen Nicely Sums Up Duck Dynasty Debacle

From a media insider’s perspective, one of the real mysteries of the Phil Robertson disaster is how his publicists and-or A&E reps could allow the patriarch to head into the woods, unsupervised, with an enterprising GQ reporter. Unless Robertson specifically told this gang to head the other swamp way, there’s just no excuse from a PR-handling point of view for the non-chaperoned nature of that assignment.

More broadly, all kinds of people continue to take shots at A&E for the implicit hypocrisy of being surprised or apologetic for such a predictable, de-facto eventual quagmire. On that front, FishbowlNY thinks one of the best encapsulations comes from cartoonist Don Asmussen, for the latest edition of his bi-weekly San Francisco Chronicle strip “Bad Reporter:”

Duck Dynasty‘s Phil Robertson on Indefinite Hiatus Following Anti-Gay Remarks (THR / The Live Feed)
A&E has placed Duck Dynasty patriarch Phil Robertson on indefinite hiatus following anti-gay remarks he made in a recent profile in GQ. “We are extremely disappointed to have read Phil Robertson’s comments in GQ, which are based on his own personal beliefs and are not reflected in the series Duck Dynasty,” A&E said in a statement. GLAAD / GLAAD Blog The Robertsons, the family whose duck hunting products have made them a fortune, are breakout stars featured in A&E’s Duck Dynasty. GQ’s profile of Phil Robertson included some of the vilest and most extreme statements uttered against LGBT people in a mainstream publication. His quote was littered with outdated stereotypes and blatant misinformation: “It seems like, to me, a vagina — as a man — would be more desirable than a man’s anus. That’s just me. I’m just thinking: There’s more there! She’s got more to offer. I mean, come on, dudes! You know what I’m saying? But hey, sin: It’s not logical, my man. It’s just not logical.” FishbowlNY The headline for Drew Magary‘s GQ Louisiana visit (“What The Duck?”) now seems especially appropriate. Comments are coming in fast and so far are about evenly for-against Robertson’s outspoken views. Ad Age / Media News The question is how the comments will impact the show. Food Network dropped Paula Deen from the channel earlier in the year after she admitted in a deposition that she had used racial slurs. In 2007, A&E halted production of Dog The Bounty Hunter after star Duane Chapman made racial slurs. The show returned to the network less than a year later. NYT The announcement has no immediate effect on the series because it is not currently in production. Robertson already filmed episodes for the next season of Duck Dynasty and a network spokesman said he would appear in many of those. Business Insider Looks like Robertson can kiss that $200,000 an episode paycheck goodbye “indefinitely.”

GLAAD Takes Issue with Duck Dynasty Star’s GQ Remarks

PhilRobertsonThe PR blitz for A&E’s reality TV juggernaut continues. While things went swimmingly for this week’s Hollywood Reporter cover story, such is not the case with a GQ feature.

Per Ad Age‘s Jeanine Poggi, GLAAD is already on the case, asking A&E if it stands by Phil Robertson‘s comments in the January GQ article. Robertson damns homosexuals and other groups with a quote from Corinthians. He later makes some reprehensible remarks that bring to mind Toronto mayor Rob Ford‘s “plenty at home” statement:

“It seems like, to me, a vagina – as a man – would be more desirable than a man’s anus. That’s just me. I’m just thinking: There’s more there! She’s got more to offer. I mean, come on, dudes! You know what I’m saying? But hey, sin: It’s not logical, my man. It’s just not logical.”
