J.C. Penney and Condé Nast Team Up To Launch Modern Bride In Stores

One year ago yesterday, Condé Nast shuttered four magazines including bridal publications, Modern Bride and Elegant Bride.  Today, J.C. Penney Co. parterned with Condé Nast to announced its plans to revive the Modern Bride concept in the department store setting. 

J.C. Penney will target the 25-34-year-old consumer by rolling out bridal products including a fine jewelry line set to launch in February.  Beyond finding the expected variety of engagement rings and wedding bands, customers that interact with the Modern Bride brand will be assisted by specially trained bridal professionals. 

J.C. Penney CEO Myron E. Ullman, III discusses the value in joining forces with Condé Nast:

“Condé Nast’s deep understanding of the bridal market and valuable direct connection to potential customers make them the ideal partner, allowing JCPenney to cater to brides who will appreciate the Modern Bride name and continue to shop with JCPenney beyond their wedding day.”

Ullman won’t have to wait too long to see if the Modern Bride concept takes off, the fine jewelry line will be released just in time for Valentine’s Day.

taylor_swift_blender_cover-x622200.jpgIt’s been a tough year for the publishing industry, and magazines in particular have had it rough. Every major publisher has had to shutter at least one of its titles, and some of our favorite glossies have gone to that great magazine rack in the sky.

While it would take forever to list all the over 400 magazines that have folded this year, we here at FishbowlNY put together a timeline of some of the bigger names that were shuttered this year. The bad news? It looks like in the last six months of the year the number of titles snowballed. Here’s hoping that 2010 looks a lot brighter.

modern2.pngNews of magazine closures was, sadly, pretty prevalent throughout 2009. But, although 428 magazines folded during the year, according to MediaFinder.com, 275 launched.

Launching a magazine or Web site in the midst of a recession is never an easy task. But we think there are a few new pubs on the block that will be around for awhile. Even mediabistro.com got in the launching spirit, debuting four new blogs this year: WebNewser, MediaJobsDaily, BayNewser and eBookNewser.

As the year closes out, here’s a look at some of the biggest launches in print and online.

Magazines
Much-anticipated travel magazine Afar celebrated its launch in August with an opulent party, pretty unheard of these days.

getmarried.jpgGet Married proved that there is still room in the bridal magazine market, despite the closure of Modern Bride and Elegant Bride this year.

And Modern added another design magazine to the mix.

Cookie may have crumbled, but Bonnier Corp. successfully split its parenting magazine into two editions, Parenting Early Years and Parenting School Years, later raising the rate base of School Years.

Other notable launches: Children’s Health, Organic Beauty, Women’s magazine VAIN and two Reader’s Digest Association launches, DIY mag Fresh Home and Rick Warren‘s Purpose Driven Connection, which folded later in the year.

What Titles Were You Sad To Lose In 2009?

gourmet.jpgIt hasn’t been the easiest year for print journalism. Crain’s New York Business reported Friday that 367 magazines have been axed in the last 12 months, with 64 going online-only, according to preliminary numbers from online database Mediafinder.com. (In October, Mediafinder said 383 had already closed up shop during the first nine months for the year).

According to The Business Insider, by July over 105 newspapers received similar treatment. Many more have had to scale back or go to an almost entirely digital format to survive.

In early October, Condé Nast took a particularly brutal hit with the shuttering of four titles: Gourmet, Cookie, Modern Bride, and Elegant Bride. And those closures came months after Condé folded Domino and Portfolio earlier in the year.

Still, it could have been worse…The New York Times is still around, despite some pessimistic predictions, right? So we here at FishbowlNY would like to hear from our readers: which closing affected you the most? Report: More Than 100 Magazines Shuttered In Last Three Months

cookie cover.jpgUpdating its numbers from a few months ago, Mediafinder.com, an online database of American and Canadian periodicals, reports that more than 100 magazines have folded in the past three months, bringing the total number of pubs tracked by Mediafinder that have been shuttered this year to 383.

These latest numbers do not include the four magazines folded by Condé Nast last week, but they do include Nickelodeon and Nick Jr., and Time Inc.‘s Style & Design and Southern Accents.

However, in the last three months, 72 new magazine have launched — including titles like Afar.

The numbers also show that regional magazines are closing more frequently than other categories, but they are they most frequently launched types of magazines as well. This is the same news that came out of Mediafinder back in July — so it appears that 2009 overall has been a big year for regional mags. Business-to-business magazines have also been in flux, accounting for 75 of the new launches since January and 130 of the closures. (24 b-to-b mags also went from print to online only in 2009, Mediafinder said.)

As the number of shuttered mags add up, we can be heartened by the fact that some pubs are taking a chance and launching in this harsh climate. They’re just simply not launching as quickly as they’re folding.

What’s Left At Condé Nast?

conde nast logo.jpgCondé Nast is one of the largest magazine publishers in the U.S., and the news earlier this week that it was shuttering four titles really didn’t change that.

Condé still has 18 consumer magazine titles, plus two trades — WWD and Footwear News — under its Fairchild Publications arm. But the company had been working hard to streamline it portfolio in the past year. In addition to Cookie, Gourmet, Modern Bride and Elegant Bride, which all folded this week, the company has shuttered several titles this year. Men’s Vogue went a year ago, followed by men’s wear trade pub DNR (our former home), Domino and then Portfolio

Breaking: Condé Shutters Four Magazines: Cookie, Gourmet, Two Bridal Titles

cookie cover.jpgWe have been waiting for news of what sort of changes consulting company McKinsey & Co. will bring to Condé Nast, and this morning we have the answer. According to reports, the company is planning to shutter Gourmet, parenting magazine Cookie, Elegant Bride and Modern Bride.

Although there had been speculation that one of Condé’s epicurean titles was not long for this world, the closing of Cookie comes as sort of surprise. Especially since as recently as last week the magazine’s publicist pitched us an interview with Cookie‘s publisher Carolyn Kremins, boasting that she was “recently awarded the MIN Sales Team Leader of the Year for 2008 recognizing her 11 percent increase in ad revenue in 2008 versus 2007 with almost 30 percent of the publication’s 2008 ad pages [coming] from new advertisers.”

Mediaite quickly posted the email that went out to staffers today from CEO Chuck Townsend, which breaks down the changes. We’ve posted after the jump.

Here’s the most important parts of the memo:

“…Brides will increase its frequency to monthly to solidify its position as the most important brand in the bridal category, and Modern Bride and Elegant Bride will close.

Gourmet magazine will cease monthly publication, but we will remain committed to the brand, retaining Gourmet‘s book publishing and television programming, and Gourmet recipes on Epicurious.com. We will concentrate our publishing activities in the epicurean category on Bon Appétit.

Finally, Cookie magazine will be discontinued, and resources that had been dedicated to its publishing will be invested elsewhere.

The editorial and business staffs of Modern Bride, Elegant Bride, Gourmet, and Cookie all have earned their magazines large and devoted followings. We have been proud to publish these titles, and we are grateful to the staffs for their hard work and dedication.

We’re also hearing that there are staffers roaming around Condé’s offices at 750 Third Ave., which houses WWD and the bridal group among other titles, counting empty desks.

Conde Nast Cuts Website Launches but Still Hopeful About Magazines!

20newhouse.1903.jpgConde Nast: Always looking to the future! Agency Spy is saying that a spy has told them that Conde Nast has decided to put all its website launches on hold for the time being. Maybe not all that surprising considering not that long ago they decided to downsize Portfolio…in the middle of a financial crisis. But still. We all know everyone is tightening their belt at the moment, but is reducing your presence online really a smart move?

Maybe the point is they don’t actually care all that much. At today’s Newhouse panel at the Plaza the three titans of Conde Nast — David Remnick, Graydon Carter, and (apparently not going anywhere) Anna Wintour — didn’t seem all that fazed. The New York Observer reports that when asked about the current media crisis this is what they had to say:

Report: Conde Nast to Fold Elegant Bride

ebcngg.pngThe Friday afternoon magazine folding trend continues. Jossip is reporting that Conde Nast is folding Elegant Bride. Perhaps not a total surprise since it is one of three bridal magazines in Conde’s stable. But still. More details to follow as we get them.
