Vegemite Survey Spreads It Back President Obama’s Way

President Obama once famously told a visiting Australian Prime Minister that he was no fan of their dark brown food paste.

This week, Down Under’s leading market research firm is firing back:

President Obama described Vegemite as “horrible… a quasi-vegetable byproduct that you smear on your toast”, but what would he know? He’s not Australian! As the latest findings from Roy Morgan Research reveal, Vegemite is overwhelmingly more popular among people born here than overseas-born Aussies — although New Zealand-born folks are rather partial to it, too.

Author Credits FishbowlNY for Asian Publishing Deal

On the Internet, you just never know who might be reading.

RandyJerniganPic2Case in point: our June 24 post “Busy Author Circles Marie Osmond, Daniel Radcliffe and Ellen DeGeneres.” In the two weeks since publication, something exciting and wholly unexpected has transpired for Utah-based writer Randy Jernigan. Per some text provided by Jernigan’s U.S. publishing company rep:

On Monday July 7, contractual agreements were signed between Jernigan, Creative Partners Publishing and a newly formed Japanese publishing firm, Bunkyo-Ku Ltd. of Tokyo.

This agreement gives the Asian company co-publishing and distribution rights for the Asian market to Jernigan’s The Life and Career of Daniel Radcliffe and all succeeding books in the “fan book” series.

Busy Author Circles Marie Osmond, Daniel Radcliffe and Ellen DeGeneres

RandyJerniganPicHere’s what Utah-based writer Randy Jernigan has lined up for 2014-15. Biographies of Marie Osmond and the British Royals, and the first two installments of a new fan book series covering Daniel Radcliffe and Ellen DeGeneres.

All on the heels of Losing to Win!, his fall 2013 account of shedding 158 pounds and beating a perilous case of diabetes/hypertension. And The Road to Happiness, a spring 2014 self-help sliver.

Jernigan is a veteran entertainment journalist who has contributed over the years to national magazines, newspapers and TV programs. From today’s announcement:

“I’ve always been an admirer of Ellen’s work – not just as a talk show host and comedian, but as a person too,” says Jernigan. “Ellen does a lot of wonderful things for people – on the show as well as in her personal life – that most people never hear about. She’s an inspiration to a lot of people out there and I’m excited to be including her in this fan book series.”

A Sure Thing: Ellen DeGeneres and Oscar Prop Bets

The only problem with Jimmy Kimmel‘s brilliant proposal last night is that Oscars host Ellen DeGeneres is in absolutely no need of extra cash. But if she were, she might definitely take up her ABC-TV Academy Awards broadcast mate on his crafty idea.

Kimmel told Ellen she is in the perfect position to bet, through an anonymous middleman like Guillermo, on prop wagers like these:

  • Will Ellen wear a dress during the show?
  • What will be the color of the first suit Ellen wears on stage?
  • Will Pink and Bette Midler perform a duet?

Nikki Finke Still Planning to Live-Snark the Oscars

ShutterstockSnarkAwards show watchers rejoice! All systems are still set to go with respect to Nikki Finke live-snarking the 86th annual Academy Awards.

It’s unclear at this point if the live-snarking will take place on Twitter or via NikkiFinke.com. Either way, it’s a welcome prospect.

Because despite Bill Murray‘s very solid indirect advice regarding acceptance speeches, chances are that – in the moment – winners like Cate Blanchett will espouse the tiresome thank-you drill. Which leaves only the opening monologue and dwindling comedy bits as the show lumbers on to hang our entertainment hats on.

Ellen DeGeneres on the Pros and Cons of Hosting the Oscars

The affable afternoon talk show host did a bit Tuesday about her process of saying yes to a second go at hosting the Oscars. It was cute, although come Academy Awards time, the gag writing needs to be a lot stronger.

At one point, DeGeneres noted the following:

“Pro: Meryl Streep could get a record 17th Oscar nomination.
Con: Hashtag #wereoveritmeryl.”

Who Should Ellen Dance With at Next Year’s Oscars?

There are so many show-open possibilities that come to mind for Ellen DeGeneres March 2 under the tutelage of telecast producers Neil Meron and Craig Zadan. And since Billy Crystal recently reminded just how tense the room is when the host first walks out, FishbowlNY would like to float out the following three options.

1) OPTION ONE – Dance With Everybody: Ellen could get the whole crowd into it, in the same way that Tilda Swinton did this spring at EbertFest in honor of the late Roger Ebert. Ellen dancing up and down the aisles would loosen the Dolby Theatre up, fast.

2) OPTION TWO – Dance With Jack: Nicholson would probably never go for it. But is there a more iconic audience member from the era when Academy Awards broadcasts were watchable? We don’t think so. A brief on-stage jig with the sunglassed one would get things off to a gold-standard start.

Jimmy Kimmel Tops White House and Emmys with Dave

A dream year for Jimmy Kimmel is about to get dreamier.

On top of getting the news that his show will be moving in the New Year to 11:35 p.m. and hosting major powwows on both coasts (White House Correspondents dinner, Primetime Emmys), there’s now this. Per a report by Lacey Rose in The Hollywood Reporter, Kimmel will finally be afforded the opportunity to interview his lifelong idol David Letterman:

Letterman will join Chris Rock, Jon Stewart, Stephen Colbert and Tracy Morgan as a guests on Jimmy Kimmel Live when the ABC host brings his late-night show to his hometown of Brooklyn for one week later this month. The move is a monumental one for Kimmel, who grew up wearing a Late Night with David Letterman jacket and would celebrate his birthday with a Late Night cake.
