Ken Tucker Takes Buyout, Departs Entertainment Weekly

Yet another big name departure from Entertainment Weekly to report today: Ken Tucker, who was part of the magazine when it launched over 20 years ago, has taken a buyout. Tucker was EW’s TV critic, and with him leaving, EW is now out two veteran critics in just two weeks. Last Wednesday Lisa Schwarzbaum left the magazine as well.

“Way back in 1989, when the first Bush was president and EW.com was just a twinkle in Bill Gannon’s eye, Ken was on the start-up team that launched Entertainment Weekly with this original mission statement: ‘We must be opinionated and we must be talked about,’ wrote Jess Cagle, EW’s managing editor, in a note. “Ken never stopped fulfilling that mission, and even though he’s leaving EW, his voice, sensibility, humor, passion, incomparable wit and humane spirit will have a lasting and benevolent impact.”

“So, yes, I’m leaving @EW, my home base since 1989,” tweeted Tucker. “Had a great time helping launch that super-fine mag/website. Time to write elsewhere.”

Cagle’s full memo is below.

Lisa Schwarzbaum Departs Entertainment Weekly After 21 Years

Lisa Schwarzbaum, who has been with Entertainment Weekly since 1991, is one of the biggest names to emerge from the list of Time Inc. cuts. Schwarzbaum decided to take a buyout and move on to “expand the kind of writing (and kind of living) that I do,” according to an internal memo.

Schwarzbaum became EW’s film critic in 1994 and is responsible for some of the magazine’s most impressive pieces, including a massive feature on a TV show that no one was paying much attention to at the time. It was called Seinfeld.

“There will be more writing from Lisa,” wrote Jess Cagle, managing editor EW, in the note. “A book idea is brewing. So is an online venture, as well as other developing projects. And she does want to keep writing about movies when inspiration strikes. I will miss her, but look forward to becoming just another Lisa Schwarzbaum groupie.”

The full note from Cagle is below.

Dave Karger on How Journalists Can Land TV Appearances

Dave Karger made quite a splash when, after almost two decades at Entertainment Weekly, he went to work for Fandango as chief correspondent. Now that he’s settled into the role, he tells Mediabistro what he’s been working on lately and offers up some advice for print journos looking to transition to TV. Here’s an excerpt:

How can someone position themselves for TV appearances of the kind that you make regularly? For a writer looking to get into that, is it just about getting the right job (where producers come to you), or is it about actively pitching yourself?
I think the important thing is just to know what you’re talking about and really study it. Find something that you’re extremely interested in, so that becoming an expert in it doesn’t feel at all like a job or a chore. If I didn’t have the job that I have, I would still be obsessed with the Oscars and I would still know who Quvenzhané Wallis is. It just happens to be that this is what I get to talk about for work.

I feel like all the great stuff I’ve gotten to do over the years, whether it’s the Today show or being the Academy greeter, it was never a calculated plan. I just tried to be comfortable in front of the camera and really develop an expertise. I think the fact of the matter is that I’m really interested in this, and that just shows when I talk about it or in the past when I have written about it.

Cover Battle: Entertainment Weekly or T: The NY Times Style Magazine

Welcome back to FishbowlNY’s weekly Cover Battle. Today we have Entertainment Weekly versus T: The New York Times Style Magazine. We had to choose EW’s cover because 1) Star Wars is awesome 2) Star Wars is awesome and 3) They thankfully didn’t include Jabba The Hutt.

The Weeklies: Winners and Losers for The First Half

Sometimes it’s difficult to choose between a winner and a loser. George Michael is the only guy we remember from Wham!, but is that really a good thing? Maybe the other guy is happier with his life knowing that no one will ever approach him in a grocery store and sing, “Wake me up, before you go-go!” to him.

The point is that it’s difficult to choose who came out the winner in that situation. This isn’t the case with magazines. There are numbers, and though the numbers can be skewed a bit, they’re generally a reliable indicator of a title’s health.

The New York Times reports that for weeklies, the big winners for the first half are Time, The Week and The New Yorker. Time increased its newsstand sales 16 percent from January through June, and saw its total circulation climb to about 3.4 million. That put it way ahead of the pack, because The Week posted just a two percent gain in overall circulation and The New Yorker’s single-copy sales jumped by only 1.2 percent. But they’re all still winners, and that’s a good thing.

Newsweek – despite attempting to post the oddest collection of covers ever – headed up the losers for weeklies.

continued…

Academy Awards Boost Magazine Website Traffic

Thanks to Anne Hathaway being arguably the most boring person on the planet and James Franco being (shockingly!) not as smart as the media would like him to be, the Academy Awards were largely unwatchable this year.

However, according to the latest from min, all was not lost. Magazine websites, particularly Entertainment Weekly’s, saw huge traffic boosts from the ceremony:

Its +12.60% February-versus-January differential (unique visitors were fractionally down) peaked on February 28, when 12.6 million PVs were measured as the Oscar recap was posted. Sum was +85% versus post-Oscars 2010 (March 8, 2010), but it was the social echoes that really paid off. Over 15,000 comments were posted on a blog that proved to be the most popular live coverage ever for EW, even beating its famous Lost finale coverage (May 23, 2010). Further, EW Oscar stories were shared over 10,000 times on Facebook, and the post-Oscar wave even hit the magazine’s mobile site, which hit a daily record with over half a million page views.

Entertainment Weekly’s Managing Editor Discusses iPad App

Jess Cagel, Managing Editor of Entertainment Weekly, says in an Ad Age interview that EW‘s Must List iPad app is a hit with readers because it allows them to engage in an immediate and meaningful way.

The app is a digital version of the popular Must List, which features pop culture picks from the magazine’s editors. Cagle says that magazine staffers figured out quickly that the list was the best way to go when creating their iPad app:

We felt it was really critical to leverage the capabilities of the iPad, and that’s a primary reason we decided to launch with the Must List app. It’s a popular print feature that translates extremely well to a digital platform, where users can act immediately on our recommendations with one tap. Plus, from a development perspective, it was a manageable concept for us to deliver a quality, useful experience in a very short production window.

Seems like a smart strategy for an app to us.

Cagel tells Ad Age that even though the app is in its infancy, updates are already on the way. He also says that it’s not necessarily the biggest celebrity news that gets the most attention from readers, sometimes it’s an indie band or some obscure website.

So keep writing that blog about socks that look like presidents, you never know when your time to shine will come.

The New York Times Responds to Whoopi Goldberg’s Rant

Yesterday on The View, Whoopi Goldberg lost her mind when Barbara Walters brought up an article in the New York Times that seemingly left Goldberg out of a list of black actors who had won Oscars.

Goldberg lashed out at the paper, and co-host Elisabeth Hasselbeck canceled her subscription in protest. Goldberg claimed it was a travesty that the Times didn’t know she had won:

It’s hard not to take it personally. People in Somalia know; people in China know. You’re supposed to be better than this. This is not some newspaper from Hoochie-Coochie Land. Dammit, get your facts straight!

However, the piece in question, titled “Hollywood Whiteout,” by Manohla Dargis and A.O. Scott, seems to have been misread. This according to the Times, who issued a statement to Entertainment Weekly writer Ken Tucker, who covered the story early yesterday. The statement:

Time Inc. Claims Four of Five Most Popular Magazines on Twitter

A bit ago FishbowlNY poked fun at Time for having a whole team dedicated to their Twitter feed, but it looks like the joke is on us. According to Folio, four out of the top five most followed magazines on Twitter are Time Inc. brands.

As of January 31st, People was the number one most followed magazine with 2.3 million followers, then Time, Instyle, WWD, and Entertainment Weekly round out the top five.

Of course just because those magazines have a lot of followers doesn’t mean they know how to turn the numbers into cash, but regardless, it bodes well for the brand in general. So to those at Time that we might have offended with our joke, we’re sorry for being temporarily right.

Check out the 50 most followed magazines after the jump.

New York Magazine’s Vulture Blog Expands

New York magazine’s blogs — from Daily Intel to Vulture to Grub Street — represent an interesting mini-empire on the Web. Unlike the disparate sites owned by say, Dan Abrams or Nick Denton, you always know that the New York blogs are there to represent the print publication and sell subscriptions, even if their timely scoops and commentary often transcend that purpose.

But magazine’s entertainment blog, Vulture, has been gearing up for a massive revamp, which it is unveiling this week. The redesigned blog now includes new widgets to help you search, expanded coverage and highlights, under the leadership of recent hires Josh Wolk (formerly of Entertainment Weekly) and Claude Brodesser-Akner as entertainment editor and West Coast editor, respectively.

In addition, NYmag.com is looking towards doubling their first quarter profits from the same time last year. So while ad sales might be trickling back into print, there is still an argument to be made for keeping your Web sites timely and relevant. Hear that, Condé?

Full press release after the jump.
