Props: Stuff That Deserves Mention This Week

Good on ERSNews.com for breaking the Mirthala Salinas story before anyone else (1 hour and 11 minutes before the LAT, as co-editor Eric Longabardi tells us).

Congrats to local sports parody site eTrueSports.com for its “debut” on YouTube.

Kudos to Deadline Hollywood Daily for calling out Eli Roth’s work for what it is: Disgusting.

(Our apologies to Bam-Bam the Pug for ripping off this photo.)

LA Times to ERS News: Cease and Desist/ERS News to LA Times: Make Your Reporters Stop Copying Us

Nav_Home_r1_c1.jpg

ERS News.com enjoys a good game of cat and mouse with the LA Times lawyer. The exchange is long, but very worthwhile, and it all started with a cease and desist demand.

First email from Karlene Goller, Vice President and Deputy General Counsel:

I am an attorney for the Los Angeles Times. Your website is currently displaying without authorization and without proper attribution or copyright notices copyrighted photographs and captions owned by the Los Angeles Times:http://www.ersnews.com/mayor_chick/Mayor_LATimes.htm

You do not have permission to post or display our copyrighted material and section 107 of the Copyright Act does not provide you any defense to posting the photographs and captions without our permission. Together with the Washington Post, we successfully litigated that issue years ago in federal court.

Mirthala Salinas and Mayor Villaraigosa: Does the Romance Cost the City?

07_33_33news7.jpg

The LA Times dutifully kept the heat on Telemundo temptress Mirthala Salinas and Mayor Villaraigosa, sort of. As Mickey Kaus points out, the LAT considers her the victim, with the last line in the piece:

“She is a community figure; people relate to her and respect her,” said Rochelle Newman-Carrasco, chief executive of Enlace, an L.A. communications marketing firm that specializes in Latino media. “Spanish-language news anchors are not just readers of the news. They are the voice of the community; they are advocates for the community and role models.

Passing quickly over the role model part, Luke Ford wonders why dating politicans is worthy of respect. Mayor Sams’ commentors agree, in their fashion.

Eric Longabardi, of ERSNews, has the latest on a female security officer hand-picked by Villaraigosa, who also assures AP’s Michael Blood that no tax-payer monies have paid for nookie, locations for nookie, transport for nookie, but security during nookie? That’s a different story.

Poor Andres Martinez. Remember him–the op-ed section guy who dated a woman in PR, whose client he tapped to guest-edit a section, and his semi-conflict of interest problem? The LA Times wasn’t very concerned about his career.

Phil Spector Trial Takes Off /Dateline Producer Still on the Jury

trial.jpg

NBC Dateline producer Adam Gorfain has a front row seat for the legal shenanigans expected today when Phil Spector’s trial really gets going. But Gorfain’s not working the story, he’s a member of the jury, according to Eric Longabardi of ERSNews. Gorfain even admitted on his questionnaire that he’d been investigating the case and reading court documents for several months.

Longabardi didn’t get any comment from NBC. Gorfain’s done a number of stories involving DNA evidence, but more relevantly, he produced a jailhouse interview with a woman convicted in the Texas Cadet murder case.

FBLA thinks this is already sounding too much like the Robert Blake and O.J. Simpson trials. Where do the D.A.s go when they think? (Of course, defense lawyer Bruce Cutler already called one male DA “girly”.)

Investigative Reporting Site Launches

longabardi.jpgLA-based independent producer and investigative journo Eric Longabardi and Peabody Award-winning TV vet Roger Scott launched an online investigative reporting site Tuesday — because a pig flight school would have been too lucrative.

ERSNews.com has a terrible name, and a not-so-catchy motto: “It’s news: exclusive and original.” But we welcome any online journalistic innovation that doesn’t involve Britney Spears, so we wish them well.

Why an online news source? Here’s one guess: Investigative reporter Longabardi seems to have long ago given up on Old Media.

Here’s to the brave, new world.
