WPIX Sees Strong Gains in Morning and Evening Newscasts for 2012

The numbers don’t lie! WPIX enjoyed a successful 2012. In year-to-year figures released by the Tribune-owned company, Channel 11 bested its rivals at WNYW and WCBS in the crowded 4 a.m. competition, while tying WABC in that early broadcast.

Equally as impressive, when the local morning shows switch to the network, WPIX has reason to pump its chest, defeating CBS This Morning.

WPIX was the only station to record gains in every hour of the elongated morning newscasts, according to Nielsen Media Research.

Drilling down in the early morning news, from December 2011 to December 2012, Channel 11 delivered double and triple digit percentage growth in the “advertising-friendly” adults 25 to 54. In the 4 a.m. hour, the PIX11 Morning News saw a 100 percent increase from 2011 to 2012. In the 5 a.m. hour, the Morning News saw a 33 percent increase year to year, while the 6 a.m. hour, WPIX increased by 20 percent.  But, the good vibrations don’t stop there for Channel 11, with another 33 percent bounce in the 7 a.m. hour.

Jodi Applegate to Step Down from PIX11

Jodi Applegate is stepping down from her position as anchor of PIX 11 News at Five and PIX 11 News at Ten. Applegate made the decision to resign because she and her husband — Michael Kay — are expecting a daughter in January, via gestational carrier. Applegate has been with WPIX since 2010.

“After years of putting my career first, I’ve decided to step back for a moment and enjoy this new role,” Applegate said, in a statement. “It was a difficult decision to choose to step away from a full-time anchor position but I want to take this time to enjoy being a new mom and focus on the baby. I’m looking forward to returning to media in the future.”

“We have enjoyed working with Jodi, she will be greatly missed and we wish her and Michael all the best,” added Eric Meyrowitz, PIX11′s vice president and general manager.

Applegate’s final broadcast is December 19.

John Houseman Named WPIX Interim News Director

It’s official. Bill Carey‘s tenure is over as news director at Tribune flagship WPIX. Carey had a three-year “term” running the station’s news department. We’re told Carey cleared out his office during the weekend and is headed to an Internet startup.

FishbowlNY has obtained a terse email that WPIX VP/GM Eric Meyrowitz sent to staffers this morning.

While we conduct our search for Bill Carey’s replacement, John Houseman will be interim News Director. During this time, please see John or me with any questions.

There has been speculation that Tribune honchos, based in Chicago, will ultimately take over the station.

WPIX and Carey were dealt a bad hand in recent months. The fight to grab all-important ratings from WNYW/Channel 5 suffered a setback, thanks in no small part to the Cablevision/Tribune retransmission fees issue. WPIX has been non-existent on the Bethpage, N.Y.-owned cable company since mid-August. Approximately 3 million Channel 11 viewers have been in the dark.

‘Seinfeld’ Heads Back to Original Syndication Home–WPIX

After a long stint on Fox 5, Seinfeld is returning to WPIX starting tonight. Reruns of the legendary sitcom starring Jerry Seinfeld, Jason Alexander, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, and Michael Richards originally aired on Channel 11 from 1995 to 2001 before moving to Fox 5/WNYW.

This time around, WPIX runs a weeknight double feature of Seinfeld from 11 p.m. to midnight. Seinfeld also airs Sunday nights at 9 p.m. and 9:30 p.m.

To kickoff the Seinfeld return, WPIX has a special Nothing But the Big Apple theme week focusing on classic New York episodes including The Non-Fat Yogurt, The Subway and The Soup Nazi.

WPIX Hires New VP/GM

Tribune Broadcasting named Eric Meyrowitz as vice president and general manager of WPIX. Meyrowitz, who had served as VP and GM for Tribune’s WDCW-TV in Washington, D.C. since 2004, assumes the job immediately.

“Eric is the right guy for this job,” said Tribune Broadcasting President Jerry Kersting in a statement. “Even more so because he’s originally from New York–he understands the city, the importance of local news and the rich tradition of WPIX.”

“This is an incredible opportunity to lead a great station in the best media market in the country,” said Meyrowitz, a New York native. “With new syndicated programming launching this fall, and the expansion of its morning news show, WPIX will continue growing its legacy and I’m honored to be a part of it. Plus, I get to return home-I can’t wait to get started.”

In June, Tribune fired longtime WPIX president and GM Betty Ellen Berlamino. She started at the station in 1994, and was promoted to general manager in 2000.

Reportedly, veteran anchor Jim Watkins will not have his contract renewed by WPIX. His deal with the station was set to expire at the end of August.

A station spokesperson had no comment on Watkins’ situation at Channel 11.

Watkins is on vacation this week from his PIX News at Ten duties.

Update: A tipster tells FishbowlNY, despite the changes at WPIX, Watkins is currently negotiating his contract. “He is still in,” writes the tipster.
