Michael Wolff Hates Everything, Volume 7,459

As anyone who follows the media beat knows, Michael Wolff pretty much hates everything, and that’s what makes him sort of fun. He’ll pan anyone and everything having to do with media, no matter who they are or how successful a company has been in the past. Nothing matters, because everything is terrible. Wolff is so grumpy that if given the chance, he’d pen a 2,500 word column on the downfall of ice cream. “The cone strategy is flawed! Sprinkles don’t resonate with today’s youth!”

Barbara Walters’ Final Scheduled Television Appearance Announced (ABC News)
Almost a year after she announced her plan to depart daily television, Barbara Walters is preparing to say farewell. Her last day co-hosting The View, a program that she created, will be May 16, and ABC will air a two-hour special highlighting her life and career that night, from 9-11 p.m. ET. TVNewser Walters will continue to executive produce The View and will contribute to ABC News as the news warrants. THR / The Live Feed The ABC News headquarters in New York City will also be named in her honor, as the Barbara Walters Building, during a dedication ceremony this spring. Walters acknowledged that she’s sad to leave but that “it feels right for me,” repeating what she’s previously said about wanting to leave before people complained about her being on television too long. Reuters Walters, 84, has suffered from health problems recently, including a concussion after she fainted and hit her head last year and a bout of chickenpox. In 2010, she had open heart surgery. Since announcing her retirement, she hosted 20 Years of The 10 Most Fascinating People, the final show of her yearly special program about intriguing personalities. During her long career, Walters was known for her interviews on U.S. television with world leaders including Cuba’s Fidel Castro, Britain’s Margaret Thatcher, Saddam Hussein of Iraq and every U.S. president since Richard Nixon. She also interviewed celebrities such as Elizabeth Taylor, Angelina Jolie and Tom Cruise. Mediaite Walters joined ABC in 1976, when she famously became the first female anchor ever on an evening news program. She later became a co-host of 20/20 and launched The View in 1997.

Vox.com, Led by Ezra Klein, Goes Live

Vox Media’s Vox.com, a general news site being led by Ezra Klein, is now live. It’s an impressive looking site and certainly more advanced than what Klein was used to at The Washington Post. Appearance aside, the most notable thing about Vox is something called “Vox Cards.”

According to Klein, Melissa Bell and Matt Yglesias — the founders of Vox —  the site’s mission is to “explain the news,” and a big part of that is the Cards.

At any point when you’re reading an article, a Vox Card could be available through highlighted text. Clicking the text brings up the Card, which provides additional context to the article you’re currently reading. The Cards also exist on their own. For example, Vox’s first set of Cards includes topics such as Obamacare, The Ukraine Crisis and GM’s Recall Scandal.

The Cards are a cool feature, even if it might take some time getting used to them. They’re just not something you expect to see, which is why they might be key to Vox. Vox is attempting to make waves in an already crowded general news site market, if people accept and enjoy Cards, they’ll certainly help keep Vox afloat.

CNN Sells Zite to Flipboard (CNNMoney)
CNN has sold its news reader app, Zite, to Flipboard, a social magazine application. As part of the deal, Flipboard has also teamed up with CNN to launch custom magazines for CNN shows anchored by Fareed Zakaria, Jake Tapper and John King. The deal could be valued as high as $60 million over time, taking into account future advertising revenue, said a source familiar with the deal. TVNewser The sale occurred less than three years after CNN acquired Zite for $20 million. CNN and Flipboard’s partnership will allow CNN to expand its mobile reach and take advantage of Flipboard’s technology and mobile sales strategy. Re/code Zite itself will shut down, but CNN says most of its 20 employees will go to work for Flipboard. Zite CEO Mark Johnson will not be joining them. Forbes / Jeff Bercovici The deal merges two apps that let users aggregate news stories from all over into a single magazine-like experience. Of the two, Flipboard has been considerably more successful: It’s currently ranked No. 5 among free iPad news apps in Apple’s App Store, while Zite is No. 39. Flipboard will absorb the machine-learning technology that Zite uses to personalize news feeds for its users. Mashable The move also divests CNN of one of its most high-profile acquisitions while putting it in front of Flipboard’s users, which according to Johnson number more than 100 million.

Washington Post‘s Brad Plumer, Sarah Kliff, Max Fisher Joining Ezra Klein’s Vox Venture (HuffPost)
The Washington Post‘s Brad Plumer and Sarah Kliff are joining Ezra Klein’s new venture to be launched with Vox Media, according to newsroom sources familiar with the plans. Plumer covers environmental policy issues for the Post‘s Wonkblog, which was run by Klein until his departure last month. Kliff reports on health care policy. Klein, Plumer and Kliff declined to comment, as did a Post spokeswoman. FishbowlDC Kliff made the announcement via Twitter: “So some news! I’m leaving the Washington Post to join Vox Media.” Politico / Dylan Byers on Media Nearly two weeks after Klein’s departure, the Post has yet to name a replacement editor for its Wonkblog page — a delay that casts doubt on the blog’s viability in the post-Klein era. It’s an unenviable position. Whoever the Post selects — provided they do select someone — will have to follow in Klein’s footsteps and compete with his new venture at Vox Media. Because Klein has taken the majority of the Wonkblog team with him, the new editor will inherit almost none of the existing staff. Washington City Paper / City Desk Editors say they will be looking for replacements for Plumer and Kliff “very soon.” Adam Taylor, who the Post hired last week from Business Insider, will be taking over for Fisher. Top editor Marty Baron said last week that the paper would be hiring as it increases its blogging and expands its magazine. Politico / Dylan Byers on Media Klein’s total editorial staff is now 11.

Ezra Klein Is Joining Vox Media as Web Journalism Asserts Itself (NYT)
After a week of speculation, it turns out that Ezra Klein, the prolific creator of the Washington Post’s Wonkblog, will be going to Vox Media, the online home of SB Nation, a sports site, and The Verge, a fast-growing technology site. His change of address could be read as the latest parable of Old Media cluelessness — allowing a journalism asset to escape who will come back to haunt them — or as another instance of a star journalist cashing in on name-brand success. But it’s more complicated than that. FishbowlDC The new website, ominously named “Project X,” will be housed within the fast growing Vox Media empire. Vox is a small but potent little Web company that clearly hopes to make a play for mainstream appeal with the addition of Klein to its roster. FishbowlNY Matt Yglesias will serve as executive editor of the new Vox Media venture founded by Klein, FishbowlNY has learned. Slate’s prolific economics blogger announced last week that he would join Klein. Klein, unsurprisingly, now has the title of editor-in-chief. According to Klein’s post, Yglesias, along with Wonkblog veteran Melissa Bell, has been involved with the planning process since early last year. Capital New York Klein didn’t allow for much detail of what new publication would look like in his post on The Verge, but was clear that his team will look for a format to provide readers with more context for news stories as they develop. A general job posting for the site on Vox’s listings page provided some more hints. “We’ll need writers who are obsessively knowledgeable about their subjects to do that reporting and write those explainers — as well as ambitious feature pieces,” the posting read, before providing a more telling detail: “We’ll need coders and designers who can build the world’s first hybrid news site/encyclopedia.” BuzzFeed Klein: “We’re not trying to build a ‘super Wonkblog.’ If we were doing that we wouldn’t go through all this trouble. We intend to be incredibly good at policy and politics but also sports and science. We are trying to build a full news site and in a better and more useful way for our readers.”

If Vox Media is the Next Condé Nast, Will Ezra Klein Build its New Yorker?

Jim Bankoff sounded brazen in December 2012 discussing his plan for his little digital publisher Vox Media to someday rival the magazine titan housing The New Yorker, Vanity Fair, Wired and Vogue.

“We look at what Condé Nast did in magazine publishing, and we can do that in digital publishing, meaning scale and quality and value,” the 44-year-old CEO told Forbes, which scoffed at him to “put down that glass.” The network of three sites, the largest of which was sports-focused SB Nation, had only earned an estimated $25 million in revenues.

Less than a year later, SB Nation is busy competing with Grantland, Deadspin, Bleacher Report and ESPN — for which Condé has no equivalent. The Verge is poaching editors from Wired and expanding its editorial mandate far beyond gadget reviews. And Vox’s newly-acquired Curbed network — with its food (Eater), real estate/architecture (Curbed) and fashion (Racked) brands blossoming across North America’s major cities — nips the ankles of numerous glossy magazines that have failed to transition meaningfully to the Web.

But, aside from The Verge’s limited embrace of non-tech news, could Vox add something a little more general interest, like The New Yorker, to its stable?

Matt Yglesias Named Executive Editor of Ezra Klein’s New Vox Media Venture

Matt Yglesias will serve as executive editor of the new Vox Media venture founded by Ezra Klein, FishbowlNY has learned.

“That is my title,” Yglesias confirmed to FishbowlNY in an email Monday morning. “Now obviously the website itself needs a name and I suppose titles could change too as we build out the team, but ‘executive editor’ is the title Ezra and Melissa and I have had down on paper for me for months.”

Klein will be editor-in-chief.

Slate’s prolific economics blogger announced last week that he would join Klein, The Washington Post who recently quit to start his own publication with staff from his popular policy site, Wonkblog.

“There’s not much to say at this point,” Yglesias told The New York Times last Thursday, declining to provide details of his new position, “other than that I’m very excited to be part of this team and we’re hoping to announce some more stuff in the near future.”

But when Klein announced in a post on The Verge on Sunday that he would launch his new site with Vox, he and Yglesias chimed into the comments below. And, thanks to Vox’s comment system, which verifies official authors with a checkmark and job title, Yglesias revealed his role as executive editor.

No, Slate Hasn’t Hired Jeb Lund [Updated]

JebLund11Nearly a year ago, Gawker writer Jeb Lund outed his real identity, having long blogged under the nom-de-plume Mobutu Sese Seko, the infamous Congolese dictator. Another revelation: He was leaving Gawker.

On Thursday afternoon, the Florida-based writer tweeted that Slate had chosen him “to field a general blogger role.” Mediabistro — which owns FishbowlNY — linked to his tweet in Friday night’s Revolving Door newsletter, which announces new hires and departures in the journalism industry.

Slate, reportedly to the surprise of some editors, had just lost economics columnist Matt Yglesias to Ezra Klein‘s as-yet unnamed venture. Could Lund — whose virtual identity screams of the pre-Facebook Internet randomness and pseudonymity — be the new marquee name at the venerable online magazine?

Not to spoil Lund’s fun — he had some people, including this apparently gullible writer, fooled — but here’s what Slate said when asked if the blogger was joining the site:

“Not true,” Alissa Neil, Slate’s spokeswoman, told FishbowlNY in an email Friday evening.
