It’s Official: Chuck Todd Named Host of Meet The Press (TVNewser)
As expected, NBC News has announced that Chuck Todd will be the next moderator of Meet The Press. CNNMoney The announcement confirmed widespread speculation that David Gregory, the moderator of the Sunday morning public affairs program for the past six years, would be replaced by Todd, the NBC News political director. FishbowlDC Turness also confirmed that after 20 years with NBC News, Gregory bids farewell, which he announced earlier in the day on Twitter. Todd will take reigns of the program on Sept. 7. Andrea Mitchell will moderate this weekend. FishbowlDC Gregory tweeted, “I leave NBC as I came – humbled and grateful. I love journalism and serving as moderator of MTP was the highest honor there is.” TVNewser Gregory, who joined NBC News in 1995, has hosted Meet The Press for six years, since the death of Tim Russert in 2008. During Gregory’s tenure, the show slipped in the ratings, first losing ground to CBS’ Face The Nation, and, more recently, frequently placing third behind FTN and ABC’s This Week. No word yet on what is next for Gregory, who was recently spotted meeting with CNN Worldwide president Jeff Zucker.

Greendale Community College is reopening its doors — on Yahoo! The cancelled NBC sitcom Community has been picked up by Yahoo for a 13-episode sixth season. Mashable Until recently, Community’s studio, Sony, had been in talks with Hulu about resurrecting the series following its May cancellation by NBC. NYT Community, which uses a study group at Greendale Community College as the jumping-off point for its self-referential story lines and pop culture obsessions, comes with a core audience of passionate fans. Those fans helped save the show from a previous threat of cancellation two seasons ago. Yahoo! Screen offers reruns of many shows, but Yahoo! has been putting more emphasis on adding original shows. WSJ In April, it announced the launch of 30-minute comedies Other Space and Sin City Saints, which will debut next year. In a time of “cord-cutting,” online services have helped attract subscribers with shows such as Netflix’s Orange Is The New Black and Amazon’s Alpha House. Deadline Hollywood The deal for Community extends Sony TV’s strong track record in bringing back cancelled series. The studio previously brokered a deal to move acclaimed drama Damages to DirecTV after it was cancelled by FX, and found a way to bring back on their original networks cancelled series Drop Dead Diva on Lifetime and Unforgettable on CBS. All three series have gone to air multiple seasons post-cancellation. What wasn’t immediately clear was how Yahoo! plans to make money from continuing the cult show online.

Karen Finney’s Disrupt Cancelled (TVNewser)
Disrupt With Karen Finney won’t be celebrating its one-year birthday this weekend, as the 4 p.m. ET weekend show has been cancelled. FishbowlDC Disrupt debuted June 8, 2013. Finney is the former communications director for the Democratic National Committee and was previously with the NYC Department of Education. Mediaite As of Thursday afternoon, MSNBC’s listed online schedule shows that the 4 p.m. hour will now be filled by documentaries instead of an extension of the network’s news programming. THR / The Live Feed “Our thanks to Karen and her team for their great work. Finney will remain with MSNBC as a contributor,” the network said in a statement. Deadline Hollywood Lousy ratings did in the weekend show, which regularly ranked No. 4 in its time slot among cable networks.

Senate Panel Expresses Caution on Merger of Cable Giants (NYT)
Members of the Senate Judiciary Committee expressed concern on Wednesday that the proposed $45 billion merger of Comcast and Time Warner Cable would raise the prices consumers pay for cable television and high-speed Internet service while leaving them with fewer choices for video programming. But the senators generally failed to rattle Comcast and Time Warner executives or cause them to diverge from their basic defense of the merger: that it will not affect competition because the two companies do not compete anywhere. Only one senator, Al Franken, Democrat of Minnesota, said during the three-hour hearing that he wanted the merger blocked. CNNMoney Comcast and Time Warner Cable said that the merger will lead to improvements in services for customers, creating scale and cost savings that will drive new investments. Several Republican senators, most notably Orin Hatch of Utah, seemed to agree. Although the combined company would have a presence in 19 of the top 20 U.S. markets, Comcast executive vice president David Cohen noted that Comcast and Time Warner Cable don’t compete in any of those cities. He argued that customer choices therefore won’t be affected. The Washington Post / The Switch “There’s no doubt that Comcast is a huge, influential company with more than 100 lobbyists” hired to persuade regulators and lawmakers to approve the deal, said Franken. “But I’ve also heard from over 100,000 consumers who oppose the deal.” Cohen said at the hearing that he couldn’t promise to reduce prices on their services. The rise of cable bills at three times the rate of inflation is among the many concerns consumers have about the proposal that would merge the top two cable firms and the biggest and third-biggest broadband providers. Adweek It’s not that the Senators didn’t have “concerns.” The stats that will define the combined company’s unmatched size — 19 of the top 20 markets, 23 of the top 25, and 37 of the top 50 — give lawmakers pause. They even struggled to understand whether or not the combined company would dominate advertising sales. But they stopped short of opposing the merger, calling on the Federal Communications Commission and Department of Justice “to consider carefully the impact on consumers as they review the pending merger,” said judiciary chairman Patrick Leahy. The filing walked through the various parts of the media industry that could be affected by the deal, including online video, television programming and broadband Internet access, as well as local ad sales in the cable market. Angela Shapiro-Mathes To Head TLC

Discovery Communications has hired Angela Shapiro-Mathes to head TLC. She was President of Fox Television Studios.

TLC has been rudderless since David Abraham left in February, and the new head of Discovery, David Zaslav, wants an LA presence for TLC. The network’s mandate used to be “lifelong learning for viewers who want to grow up, not old”, which makes it sound like a bran cereal.
Now, TLC is supposed to get more appealing to women. How the addition of American Chopper to the line-up helps accomplish that isn’t clear.

TLC has been known for re-treads of BBC shows, as well as a mish-mash of programming with Miami Ink, Big World, Little People, and Fake Baboon Ass and House Demolition Challenge.
