WPIX Falls in February Sweeps; ‘Expect Changes Everywhere,’ Source

We told you about WABC having another successful ratings period.

That’s not the case on East 42nd Street.

WPIX was handed a gift last summer when WNYW made abrupt changes. With Greg Kelly off the mornings, WPIX had a chance to make headway against its rival.

However, Channel 5 hit the “re-do” button last month putting Kelly back on Good Day New York. Not only did the show put a dent in any Channel 11 traction, it clipped NBC’s Today show for the February sweeps.

Related: TVSpy, Good Day for WNYW: Morning Newscast Beats Today

So with that backdrop, we explore WPIX’s efforts in the period.

Housewives’ Bethenny Frankel Gets Test Run on Fox

She’s become a reality TV fascination, and now Bethenny Frankel is ready to take daytime TV by storm. Frankel, who spent three seasons starring on The Real Housewives of New York, will host her own one-hour entertainment talk-show. Bethenny will air starting Monday, June 11. In New York, the show will be broadcast at 11 a.m. after Wendy Williams.

Bethenny will have its test run on five other Fox-owned stations in Los Angeles, Chicago, Dallas, Philadelphia, and Minneapolis.

The show, executive produced by Frankel and Ellen DeGeneres, will feature Frankel’s no-holds barred perspective on numerous topics, including pop culture, current events, and relationships.

Frankel first gained national recognition as a runner-up on NBC’s The Apprentice: Martha Stewart. Frankel has parlayed her popularity on Bravo’s Housewives into a pair of spinoffs: Bethenny Getting Married and Bethenny Ever After, which had its third season debut in February.

News Corp. Planning ESPN Rival

News Corp. is thinking about going after the biggest name in sports. No, not Tim Tebow dammit — ESPN. Bloomberg reports that the plan is to convert the Fuel network to a new, nationally focused sports channel. The channel is rumored to be launching by the end of this year and will be led by David Hill, the chairman of Fox Sports.

Of course the big problem with trying to challenge ESPN is that it has contracts with the NFL, NBA and MLB. That’s pretty much all American sports fans care about.

Fox’s biggest grab? The rights to the World Cup in 2018 and 2022. Soccer — despite its thrilling 0-0 ties and players flopping at the slightest bit of contact — is not exactly the best way to lure viewers.

Like Father, Like Son: Kenny Albert Talks About Growing Up with Legendary Dad

We’ve all grown up with Marv Albert in our living rooms. But for Kenny Albert, it takes on the literal meaning. The younger Albert was born just as the elder Albert was attaining popularity in New York as a sportscaster.

Kenny arrived in February 1968, just weeks before the new Madison Square Garden opened–a place his dad would call his second home for more than 30 years. Two years after Kenny’s birth, Marv had his coming out party when the Knicks were on the run to their first championship. He would be at the mic providing the radio description of the exhilarating season.

While Marv is recognized as a legendary sportscaster, for Kenny, and his three siblings, he’s just dad. From his earliest age, Kenny recalls tagging along to the Garden as his father would prepare to call a Rangers or Knicks game.

“That was normal. That was what I grew up with,” Albert tells FishbowlNY. “I thought it was strange that people actually had dinner with their father, and going out with their parents every night. Because with us, it was more of a scramble.”

Online TV Service Aereo Launches as Lawsuits Swirl

Streaming TV startup Aereo launched this week in the New York market, amid lawsuits claiming copyright infringement. A lawsuit by CBS, NBC, and ABC, led to this terse joint statement:

“This service is based on the illegal use of our content. Beyond that, we believe the complaint speaks for itself.”

WABC president and general manager Dave Davis tells FishbowlNY that based on two lawsuits, he wasn’t able to comment.

“It’s in the lawyers hands,” Davis admits.

After the broadcast networks filed a suit against Aereo, the new company retaliated with a countersuit. Aereo contends that its service does not infringe on broadcasters’ copyrights since it only streams content that viewers are legally entitled to access via satellite.

Aereo works as a Web-based, mobile device TV product, offering over-the-air programs with a 90-day free trial for subscribers, only on New York stations at this point. It’s $12 a month after that.

Despite the fight with broadcasters, initial reviews for Aereo have been favorable.

Technologyreview.com writes, “Overall, despite my limited ability to use the service, and my encounters with a few glitches, using Aereo was an exciting experience.”

The Numbers Game: Cablevision Blackout Hurts Ratings For Fox Programs

Although it should not come as much of a surprise, the ongoing dispute between Fox and Cablevision has taken its toll on WNYW/channel 5′s ratings in the New York area. According to a MediaPost report by David Goetzl, the blackout of Fox for Cablevision subscribers caused a tremendous ratings drop for Monday’s new episode of House. Meanwhile, last Sunday’s New York Giants game and Fox 5 News at 10 p.m. have not witnessed as steep of a decline.

This week’s House delivered just a 0.8 rating in New York’s 18-49 demo, a 67 percent decrease from the previous Monday. The blackout’s role in the drop off is reinforced by the level week-to-week ratings posted by House on the national scale. Sunday’s 1 p.m. Giants-Lions game, however, scored a 4.1 rating in the 18-49 demo; just a 27 percent slide from Fox’s 1 p.m. Giants-Texans game on Oct. 10.

Similar to the local NFL programming, Fox 5 News at 10 p.m. has also experienced a relatively small ratings drop of 27% in New York. Compared to the .93 posted on Oct. 10, Monday’s late newscast notched a .68 rating among 18-49-year-old audiences. WNYW was losing ratings points prior to the blackout, so it remains to be seen just how influential the feud with Cablevision was in this instance.

Since the beginning of the now seven-day blackout, 43 percent of the 7.5 million homes in the New York market have been without Fox. In addition to primetime programming, local news, and one Giants football game, these Cablevision customers have missed out on five games of the NLCS and last Sunday’s Cowboys-Vikings matchup.

With the World Series looming on Oct. 27 and Nov. 2′s election day not too far behind, Fox appears to be at risk of losing some significant ratings numbers and, of course, some major dollars. Cablevision is also not in the clear as many New Yorkers may soon choose to take their business to another provider. Stay tuned folks…

Conan v. Leno: The End of The Week

Can you believe it: this time last week we were going about our Friday afternoon business, completely unaware that the following week would see the dramatic exit of Conan O’Brien from NBC‘s “Tonight Show.”

After a week of insult-slinging from their respective shows, Jay Leno and O’Brien had seemingly hit an impasse in NBC’s resolution to reinstate Leno to the 11:35 slot and push O’Brien back till 12:05. But today brings some light at the end of the tunnel: The Daily Beast reports that O’Brien will be leaving NBC, (though there are conflicting reports about when he’ll actually be leaving). He’s also going to reportedly receive an undisclosed large lump sum to ease the pain of his departure.

Google Pulls AP Stories From News Page

While Rupert Murdoch has been very vocal about wanting The Wall Street Journal and other News Corp. entities’ stories pulled from Google News, other groups like the Associated Press have been more quietly pushing for different terms of their contract with the search engine. The AP’s contract with Google News is set to expire at the end of January.

As of the time of this article, no new AP stories have appeared in Google News since December 23, which some are speculating is a power-play on Google’s part: akin to Fox threatening to pull their content from Time-Warner every time their contract expires. Except, as TechCrunch noted in an article yesterday, the deal works the opposite way on the Internet, “distribution is king, not content.”

Without all the incoming traffic that Google provides to news organizations, will media moguls relent and admit that they need the powerful search engine? Or will the AP, like Murdoch, start going to similar sites like Microsoft’s Bing out of spite for the corporate giant?

NBC Officially Plans To Move Leno From Primetime

Back in September, when “The Jay Leno Show” debuted on NBC at 10 p.m., a Time magazine cover line declared: “Jay Leno is The Future of Television. Seriously!” If that’s true, it looks like NBC no longer believes that future belongs in primetime.

After rumors started circulating last week that NBC was mulling moving Leno back to his old 11:35 p.m. slot, NBC Universal entertainment chair Jeff Gaspin confirmed over the weekend that “The Jay Leno Show” will end next month before the network starts airing coverage of the Olympics. Gaspin said he hopes to move Leno to back to 11:35 p.m., pushing Conan O’Brien and “The Tonight Show” to a 12:05 a.m. start.

Although that’s what the network wants, it remains to be seen if O’Brien will agree to the change or leave NBC for greener pastures at another network like Fox. We wouldn’t blame him, and there’s already news that he’s not happy about NBC’s moves. An exclusive report today in The New York Post, which is owned by the same parent as Fox, said O’Brien was “ready to fly the coop.”

It also remains to be seen whether viewers will welcome the change, which has been motivated by NBC affiliate stations’ complaints that the low-rated “Leno Show” was not a strong enough lead-in to their local news shows. Since NBC put its support behind Leno this year, it hasn’t developed any scripted shows for its 10 p.m. slot, which is usually populated by one-hour dramas. What will the network put there once Leno leaves?

Jesse Jackson Goes Nuts: Funny or Really Bad?

So the other day when we first heard Jesse Jackson‘s comments our initial reaction was one of shock, and some outrage, though considering the source was Fox less than it otherwise might have been. We thought: that’s it, change is good, etc., but let’s not kid ourselves racism in America hasn’t gone anywhere. The gloves are about to come off!

Or maybe not, because in the subsequent days (this has to be one of the funniest things we’ve watched lately), the entire thing has become, dare we say it, funny. Much like Fox‘s “terrorist fist-jab” and “Obama baby mama” remarks there are mornings when we have to do a double-check to make sure we’re not reading Onion. Anyway, we’re wondering if we’re alone on this — what say you FBNY readers what kind of “nuts” was it? Poll after the jump.

Jack Shafer Vs. Keith J. Kelly

It’s a battle royale of the media reporter stars. In Slate, Jack Shafer accuses Post media reporter Keith J. Kelly of pulling punches on coverage of labor issues at the Wall Street Journal ever since News Corp. launched their takeover bid:

In the old days, the Post would have commemorated the union’s agitprop with a headline such as “WSJ Staffers Take a Hike, Send Love Letter.” But the paper ignored the demo. This was in keeping with the blind eye the paper turned on a June 29 union protest, in which Wall Street Journal reporters skipped work in the morning to oppose Murdoch’s bid for Dow Jones and demand a better contract. It’s tough for any publication to report on itself or about its owners, yet Murdoch’s ownership of the Post didn’t discourage the tabloid from covering in detail the progress of the Dow Jones deal. That the New York Post no longer wishes to kick the union anthill now that the ants work for Murdoch should come as no surprise.

In other Jack Shafer news, his review of Robert Novak‘s memoir for the Times is well worth a look.
