Vanity Fair Releases its Annual New Establishment List

Vanity Fair has an updated New Establishment list debuting in today’s October issue, so we thought we’d share some of it with you. Once again, Mark Zuckerberg grabs the top spot in a gathering of 50 “buccaneering visionaries, engineering prodigies, and entrepreneurs.”

The New Establishment showcases the best and brightest innovators in the world, or as Graydon Carter describes it, “The Age of Information gives way to a burgeoning Age of Technology.” So no, the guy who invented the Ninja Blender isn’t on it, but there are plenty of others who deserve the recognition.

Here are a few locals who made the cut:

Dan Doctoroff, Bloomberg L.P. – Number 10

Jay-Z - 21

Fred Wilson, Union Square Ventures, Flatiron Partners – 35

And here’s a bonus for you. After the jump you can check out the top five from Vanity Fair’s newest list, The Powers That Be. This list focuses on the people that shape our world. Again, the Ninja Blender guy failed to make it. Sorry.

The Paley Center for Media Launches ‘Next Big Thing’ Event Series for Tech Startups and Media Companies

The Paley Center for Media has announced the launch of The Next Big Thing, a quarterly event where tech-savvy entrepreneurs can pitch their business plans to investors and help shape the future of news. A new spin on the organization’s mission to celebrate media industry movers and shakers, the inaugural event will take place at the Paley Center in New York City in January 2011 with sponsorship from Velociter, the strategic investment arm of Mediabrands. Get your pitches together, because the Paley Center is bringing the media, entertainment, and technology communities in one space to talk about the next big thing. From the press release:

In consultation with About.com founder and Paley Center trustee Scott Kurnit, the Paley Center has convened a Next Big Thing advisory board to help identify startups and curate the sessions. The advisory board will be chaired by Kurnit and include Tim Hanlon, CEO and managing director, Velociter; Wendy Clark, SVP, Integrated Marketing and Communications Capabilities, Coca-Cola; Kay Koplovitz, Paley Center board member and founder and CEO, Koplovitz & Co.; Alan Patricof, founder and managing director, Greycroft LLC; Clay Shirky, author and associate professor, NYU’s Interactive Telecommunications Program; angel investor Yossi Vardi; and Fred Wilson, managing partner, Flatiron Partners and Union Square Ventures.

“By enabling this kind of exchange of ideas and experience between the new and the established, the Next Big Thing series could have a direct impact on innovation and growth across the media industry,” said Mr. Kurnit, CEO of AdKeeper, Inc. in a statement. ”Startups get access to high-level executives and the wisdom of their collective experience while media executives and investors get a closed-door look at new ideas and new talent from the digital world.”

The gatherings are invitation-only, so interested parties should consider joining the Paley Center’s Media Council.

TechStars Incubator Coming to NYC

Young startups in the Big Apple are about to get a boost from Colorado-based startup incubator TechStars.

New York City will join Boulder, Colo., Seattle, and Boston as the fourth city to play host to the group’s mentorship and seed stage investment program.

TechStars is now accepting applications for the 2011 New York program, which starts in January. The three month boot camp seeds participating startups with capital (up to $18,000), provides shared office space, and connects founders with established tech mentors. To help fund future programs, TechStars takes a 6% equity stake in company.

“TechStars is built on a mentorship-driven approach and in New York, the biggest city in the world, there are lots of amazing mentors,” according to an announcement on the TechStars web site.

The NYC program boasts an impressive lineup of high profile mentors, including Foursquare co-founder Dennis Crowley, Tumblr founder David Karp, and Union Square Ventures financier Fred Wilson.

TechStars founder and CEO David Cohen is moving to the city to oversee the new program, while seed stage investor David Tisch is slated to manage.

Over the years, the program has yeilded some impressive results. TechStars graduate Socialthing, a social site aggregation tool, was acquired by AOL in 2008, and mass emailing service SendGrid raised more than $5 million in VC funding in 2009.

The application deadline for the 2011 NYC program is November 21.

NowPublic Releases Randomly Assembled New York ‘MostPublic’ List

We love lists. Especially ones that sort of tell us what we already know, except they randomly switch it around just to keep it interesting? Make sure we’re paying attention? It’s not clear. Anyway, with that in mind, we bring you NowPublic’s — the “world’s largest participatory news network” in case you were wondering (maybe comparable to being the world’s largest bookstore?) — list of New York’s top fifty “news influencers.” “Influencers” should not to be confused with “newsmakers” or actual reporters since, as we all know, these are now categories that currently encompass just about anyone who knows how to work a digital recorder or use twitter (yay for us). News “influencers,” however, are apparently people who shape the “media environment,” though they may also use twitter and digital recorders.

So who made the cut, all you newsmakers ask? Well, Fred Wilson and Arianna Huffington hold the top two spots, Lindsay Robertson, Lockhart Steele, and Nick Denton own slots 31,32,33 (in that order), and mediabistro.com’s intrepid leader Laurel Touby, slides in at 48, just ahead of Emily Gould and Brian Stelter. Julia Allison — apparently a “maker” and not an “influencer” — did not merit a mention. The full list is here. We’re not sure why but it sort of feels like reading a tour guide to New York by someone who’s never actually been here.
