Better Homes and Gardens Names East Coast Producer/Editor

Better Homes and Gardens has named Eddie Ross its east coast producer/editor, for print and digital. Ross comes to Meredith from Rue La La, where he most recently served as editorial director. He has also held various editorial positions at Food Network Magazine, Martha Stewart Living and more.

“Eddie’s creative, inventive approach to decorating and personal style is a perfect match for our audience of women who are passionate about expressing their style in everything that they do,” said Gayle Butler, editor-in-chief of Better Homes and Gardens, in a statement. “Additionally, his deep video experience will be invaluable to us as we expand our video content across our digital platforms.”

Ross will report to Kelly Kegans, senior deputy editor, home design.

Better Homes and Gardens Names Lifestyle Editor

Christina Poletto has been named lifestyle editor for Better Homes and Gardens. Poletto has been with Meredith since 2010, when she joined as senior publicity manager for the Better Homes and Garden brand. Prior to Meredith, Poletto was the founder of Cinch Publicity.

“Christina has impressed us with her tremendous passion and fresh, creative thinking,” said Gayle Butler, editor-in-chief of Better Homes and Gardens, in a statement. ”She also brings us strong skills in socializing content. We are thrilled to welcome her to the editorial team.”

Poletto’s appointment is effective immediately. She reports to Katherine Pushkar, senior deputy lifestyle editor.

Jim Blume Named Editorial Director for Meredith’s Special Interest Media Group

Jim Blume has been named editorial director of Meredith’s Special Interest Media group. Blume was most recently group editor/edit admin for Meredith’s National Media Group. In the new role at Meredith, Blume will be responsible for over 120 Better Homes and Gardens-branded magazines and digital brands.

“Jim brings Special Interest Media a stellar blend of experience in the business, technology, and creative aspects of publishing,” said Gayle Butler, Meredith National Media Group executive vice president and Better Homes and Gardens’ editor-in-chief. “His expertise will be a valuable asset in driving the business forward across print and digital platforms.”

Blume will report to Butler.

Promotions and Additions at Better Homes and Gardens

Better Homes and Gardens announced a few changes today. Below are the highlights.

Greg Kayko has been named managing editor. He was most recently editorial director of Special Interest Media. Kayko is succeeding Lamont Olson, who is retiring. Kayko will report to Gayle Butler, Meredith National Media Group’s executive vice president and Better Homes and Gardens’ editor-in-chief.
Kelly Ryan Kegans has been promoted from assistant deputy editor, home design, to senior deputy editor, home design. She is succeeding Oma Blaise Ford, who has been named executive editor. Kegans has been with Meredith since 2002.
Maggie Meyer has been promoted from assistant art director in the food group to senior food editor. She reports to Nancy Hopkins, senior deputy editor, food and entertaining.
Melissa Feldman joins as east coast Home editor. Feldman previously worked as a freelance design editor and writer.

Eight influential women were honored this afternoon at the New York Women in Communications 2012 Matrix Awards. The event was held at the Waldorf-Astoria and emceed by NY1 anchor Pat Kiernan.

Katie Couric, who presented a Matrix Award to Tyra Banks, walked the red carpet before the ceremony with a stool so the pair could (sort of) stand shoulder-to-shoulder (pictured). “I feel like I’m standing next to Shaquille O’Neal!” Couric quipped.

Couric’s ABC news colleagues Josh Elliott, “20/20″ EP David Sloan and SVP of communications Jeffrey Schneider attended to honor Walt Disney EVP and chief communications officer Zenia Mucha. Mucha was presented by Barbara Walters.

In her speech, Walters said Mucha, a first-generation immigrant who lived in Poland until she was 9, “might just have the toughest job of anyone I know.”

New Executive Editor, Other Moves at Better Homes and Gardens

Better Homes and Gardens has made a few moves today. Oma Blaise Ford has been promoted from Senior Deputy Editor, Home Design — a position she has held since 2002 — to Executive Editor of the magazine. Gayle Butler, Meredith National Media Group Executive Vice President and Better Homes and Gardens’ Editor-in-Chief, said that Ford’s experience is valuable to the brand. “She has a deep understanding of women and their passion for home, an exceptional style sensibility, and a fierce commitment to editorial service,” said Butler.

Additionally, Laurie Buckle has been named Editorial Director for the Better Homes and Gardens Food Content Core, which is a new position. Buckle most recently worked as Bon Appétit‘s Managing Editor.

Ellen Miller and Elizabeth Frantz have also joined the Better Homes and Gardens team. Miller has been named Beauty and Fashion Director. She comes to the magazine from Shape, where she worked as its Beauty Director. Frantz has been tapped to be Better Homes and Gardens’ Associate Social Media Editor. Frantz previously worked at Zocalo Group, a social media agency based in Chicago.

2012 Matrix Award Honorees Announced

Tis’ the season for award news. Here’s another one: The Matrix Awards, which honor extraordinary women in the media world, have announced their 2012 honorees. Past winners have included Gloria Steinem, Arianna Huffington and Alice Walker, to name a few. The 2012 honorees are Tyra Banks, Gayle Butler, Glenn Close, Maria Cuomo Cole, Ann Curry, Laura Desmond, Zenia Mucha and Peggy Noonan.

The award ceremony — presented by New York Women Communications — will be held at the Waldorf-Astoria on April 23.

Better Homes and Gardens has revamped their website to reflect a more modern brand, says Gayle Butler, the magazine’s Editor-in-Chief. “The new BHG.com reflects our overall digital strategy – a continual evolution to reach, engage and inspire women with trusted content wherever they are,” she adds.

The new site’s most prominent feature is large, bold photographs, which give the features that the pictures are attached to a real pop. And of course there’s always new advertising opportunities that come with a new layout.

Lauren Wiener, Senior Vice President for Meredith Women’s Network, explains, “The relaunch offers new integration opportunities for our advertising and marketing partners. Ad placements allow marketers to become part of the conversation with the consumer in a deep and highly engaged dialogue.”

Meredith National Media Group has promoted and added to its leadership team. The four promotions include Gayle Butler to Executive Vice President & Group Creative Content Leader and Editor-in-Chief of Better Homes and Gardens, Jim Carr to Exectutive Vice President & President, Better Homes and Gardens, Carey Witmer to Executive Vice President & President, Parents Network, and Liz Schimel to Executive Vice President & Chief Digital Officer.

Dick Porter is also joining Meredith National Media Group as Executive Vice President & President, Media Sales. Porter was most recently CEO of the Publishing Group of America.

Butler, Carr, Witmer, Schimel and Porter will all report directly to Tom Harty, President of Meredith National Media Group.

Better Homes and Gardens Gets A New Look

This week, Better Homes and Gardens debuted a new look in its June 2009 issue — with enhanced health coverage, a new front-of-book section and a more modern design update — in the hopes of making the magazine “lighter, brighter and easier to navigate,” publisher Meredith Corp. said.

The redesign will include updated fonts and visuals, as well as a dotted-line armature that will help to create structure and form, the company added.

The new Better Homes and Gardens will also include a new front-of-book section, called “Fresh,” which will focus on the home and community. “Fresh” will feature a monthly “must-have,” or new thingsto do or try from month to month; seasonal entertaining tips; the latest in home and consumer technology products; and home products with an eye towards value.

“We’re always looking at ways to enhance the incredible bond we have with our readers,” said Gayle Butler BHG‘s editor-in-chief. “We know their lives are constantly evolving and believe these new features along with the engaging design elements reflect this unique connection and understanding.”

Shelter magazines have suffered greatly during the current media crisis — like Domino, which folded earlier this year — so hopefully this redesign will help keep BHG in business.

Shake-Up at Meredith Sees Departure of Ladies Home Journal EIC

The Meredith Corporation has announced the departure of Ladies Home Journal editor-in-chief Diane Salvatore. Salvatore will be replaced by Parents editor Sally Lee, who will also oversee Circle, Fitness, American Baby Group, and Ser Padres.

The move appears to be part of a larger re-shuffling at Meredith, something Portfolio attributes to last month’s departure of editorial director Mike Lafavore. Other changes include Gayle Butler to Senior Vice President, where in addition to being Editor-in-Chief of Better Homes & Gardens, she will be editorial director of Country Home, Traditional Home and Midwest Living. As well, Dan Hickey moves to Vice President, Digital Content and Jim Blume to Group Editor. Full memo after the jump.
