Seven Words for A Carlin Home Companion

Timely: This weekend’s May 18 performance at the ACME Comedy Theatre of Kelly Carlin’s acclaimed one-woman show A Carlin Home Companion attended by FishbowlLA came on the heels of dad George‘s posthumous birthday (May 12) and ahead of his talented daughter turning the big 5-0 (June 15).

Classic: Carlin intersperses two lively acts with some powerful and selective sourcing of dad’s famous comedy bits. Watching a clean-shaven young George crack up Johnny Carson as hippie weatherman Al Sleet on a 1966 Tonight Show broadcast is especially fun in this context. (Carlin made his first appearance on the program in 1962, pre-Carson, with guest host Mort Sahl.)

Shocking: The play is at times a frank and telling look at Kelly’s struggles growing up as the only child of a road-warrior dad and alcoholic mom. At one point, she reveals the shame and secrecy of a teenage romance with a boy who abused her emotionally and physically. The bittersweet punchline here is that the boyfriend’s (unnamed) mom was an Academy Award winner for Best Actress!

So Far, Tom Leykis is Blowing Up the Internet

These are some pretty impressive numbers.

According to a press release issued today, the brand new Internet incarnation of “The Tom Leykis Show” garnered a total of 401,180 listeners during the program’s first week. The specificity of that mark echos something Leykis told us when we interviewed him last fall; namely, that he was excited to be seguing to a medium where audience numbers for an individual program can be totaled much more accurately than the benchmarks of commercial radio ratings books.

Carlos Mencia Killed by Cracked

sb07-001.jpg

There are comic’s comics, like Bill Hicks, Rick Overton and George Carlin. Then there are comics that other comics hate. Like Carrot Top and Carlos Mencia.

See here for the backstory on why comics don’t dig the Mencia.

Cracked Magazine ran a piece titled, “Carlos Mencia’s Twitter: 25 Posts Too Unfunny to be Stolen“. We thought it was pretty clever satire before we realized it’s actually from Mencia’s Twitter feed.

Eep.

Rick Overton Takes on Media

Emmy-winning writer, accomplished actor and George Carlin heir apparent, Rick Overton says good-bye to Bush and tells the media off.

About Alan Colmes,”I cough too hard, I snap my neck!”

About Bill O’Reilly, “Shut up with all your researched details! I’m fed up with answers! Blahh!”

The Pineapple Express Panel – Questions

comiccon01.gif We were at the Pineapple Express cast panel moderated by Judd Apatow.

During the fan question part, comedians Paul Scheer and Rob Huebel got up and asked a ‘question’. Mainly it was yet another opportunity to talk about their sweating butts. Which they both did. Eagerly. Repeating each other’s joke. They could have been an Apatow plant. Was it Seth Rogen‘s dialog?

And fucking George Carlin is dead.

Fred Phelps Remembers Carlin

Fred Phelps of godhatesfags.com fame, who’s name interestingly enough – sounds like a gay sex act – is giving a send off to George Carlin the in video above. He also goes after Keith Olbermann and Jerry Seinfeld. And HBO. And America. And homosexuals. And is known best for protesting the funerals of our war dead. What a peach.

The thing with Phelps is that Carlin can match him in wits and he’s been dead for two weeks.

Better Than A Shrimp On A Hamster Wheel: Reporters Mark Z. Barabak and Michael Finnegan call the YouTube/CNN Democratic debates a success. And by success, they mean that somehow democracy was served by having presidential hopefuls respond to questions posed by a snowman.

27754872.jpgJoke Theivery: Reporter Robert W. Welkos totally stole our idea to do a story about comedians who steal jokes. But we forgive him for these two interesting facts in his story: Milton Berle’s mom used to write down other comics’ jokes and give them to him, and Bill Cosby admits to lifting a bit from George Carlin early in his career. Carlin, apparently, was so disgusted he never talked to Cosby.
