Phil Hendrie Bobbie Dooley Podcast Off to a Roaring Start

The name of Phil Hendrie’s latest hilarious enterprise sounds a lot like the sort of New York City nightclub Stefon might rave about on Weekend Update. It’s called Mmm Hmmm and really rolls off the tongue when Hendrie, as female alter ego Bobbie Dooley, pronounces those words.

The weekly podcast launched February 15 on the Sideshow Network, home of the Bravo-focused Watch What Crappens, George Lopez‘s Tell Me Your Story and more. The first episode with Patricia Arquette got 15,000 downloads in three days and the show continues today with Jay Mohr.

Other guests so far have been Joel McHale (like Mohr, a two-parter) and Sugar Ray Leonard. During the McHale interview, Dooley asked the Community and Talk Soup actor what advice he might give Hendrie about finally getting a TV pilot picked up. The pair quickly came up with a new pitch for Les Moonves involving Hendrie and McHale as cops who solve crimes committed by the latter’s character. “It writes itself,” McHale raved.

Mr. Skin Goes Meta with Californication Kudo

Yes, we know – the Top 10 Celebrity Nude Scenes of 2012 announced this week by the Chicago connoisseurs who run mrskin.com is not typically the kind of thing we cover at FishbowlLA. But #9 on this year’s list was too meta to pass up.

The scene in question, from Californication episode “At the Movies,” is all about an attractive Hollywood actress (Sarah Power) well aware that she has been hired because of her willingness to show her breasts in a movie. What makes the scene doubly meta is that when she nervously flashes her upper-body assets to screenwriter Hank (David Duchovny) in his trailer ahead of her nude scene, he ends his praise with: “… and nab yourself a Mr. Skin Award in the bargain.”

George Lopez Gets Canned: Conan’s Fault?

A little less than a year after getting bumped from his 11 p.m. time slot to make way for Conan, George Lopez is officially out of a job. TBS canceled Lopez Tonight yesterday.

Is Conan to blame? Vulture says no.

Hardly. Fact is, while some pundits tried to spin Conan O’Brien’s bumping of Lopez Tonight to midnight a little under a year ago as a demotion for Lopez, if anything, it was a life preserver. Lopez Tonight was turning in mediocre numbers when it aired at 11 p.m. and its renewal for a season two was hardly assured before O’Brien entered the picture. It’s possible TBS might have given the show another season — it costs less to produce that O’Brien’s show — but, most likely, Lopez would’ve almost certainly ended up where it is today: canceled.

Dolores Hope Is Way Older Than Her Community Newspaper

There’s a rather funny juxtaposition in the current issue of free weekly community newspaper The Tolucan Times.

Dolores Hope, the widow of the guy who basically put the plush enclave of Toluca Lake on the map, recently turned 102. That’s more than 40 years older than the newspaper in which a fond write-up of the May 27th birthday girl can presently be found (The Tolucan Times was established in the early 1950s):

Much like her husband, she has been the living definition of her name — HOPE. “Fa i fate, no parole” in Italian means, “Do it, don’t talk about it.” Deeds always trumpet louder than words and Dolores Hope was the embodiment of that adage. Her life was an example of doing generous acts to elevate and improve the lives of others.

George Lopez Rocks the Razzies

Late night talk show host George Lopez may have been joking when he announced just before Christmas on Good Day LA that he was planning to run for mayor of Los Angeles. But he is most definitely a top write-in candidate for the 2010 Razzie Awards.

Per our friends at The Envelope, Lopez has been short-listed in the Worst Supporting Actor category for three different performances: Marmaduke, The Spy Next Door and Valentine’s Day (pictured). In fairness, Lopez provided only a voice for the bow-wow comic strip adaptation, but his other two Razzie choices are live action legit.

Latina Author Wages Dirty Battle with Hollywood

The lines have been blogged. On one side is CAA, NBC and Ann Lopez, divorcing wife of comedian and talk show host George Lopez. On the other, author Alisa Valdes-Rodriguez, incensed after getting hold of the whitewashed TV pilot script from Lopez’s Encanto Productions based on her novel The Dirty Girls Social Club.

Valdes-Rodriguez made her objections known via an incendiary December 23rd blog post, according to which Lopez blocked NBC’s desire to have her write the pilot script. She has written several follow-ups since, covering everything from the cease-and-desist letter she received from NBC on Christmas to the fact that CAA has suddenly decided to stop representing another one of her literary adaptation properties. Today, the author checks in with this:

I have made the statements I needed to make. Now it’s time for me to focus on the legal aspects of this situation. In the meantime, please keep speaking out, speaking among yourselves, and know that I am fighting for YOU, and for ALL OF US to be represented as we ARE and not as Hollywood wishes us TO BE.

Conan’s Ratings Are In: Better Than Leno or Letterman

4.2 million people watched the debut of Conan O’Brien‘s TBS show Conan last night–good for a 2.8 rating. The entire show is now up on the web too, in case you missed it. Or are too broke to afford basic cable.

Conan’s numbers handily beat Leno’s 3.5 million and Letterman’s 3.4 million viewers–even though Conan starts his show a half-hour earlier. Lets see if he can keep it up.

George Lopez‘s midnight debut drew a 1.1 rating after Conan.

  • George Lopez Gets Some Advertising Love

Generally lost amidst the hype for Conan O’Brien‘s huge TBS debut tonight is the fact that George Lopez‘s show Lopez Tonight is also making its new midnight debut tonight. Lopez was doing pretty well before Conan showed up–he was pulling in numbers right on par with The Daily Show. Color us crazy, but we haven’t seen much hype for Lopez at all since Conan came to town. You’d think TBS would want to remind folks that the guy who Conan bumped was still around. Especially because there are going to be some huge changes with his show. He’s on four nights a week instead of three now, and he’s apparently going to be going live to tape, instead of just going on for hours and editing the show down.

Well, they waited until the day of the show’s premiere, but the TBS folks finally bought Lopez some significant ad space on the web–Lopez Tonight was wallpapered all over TMZ for most of the day. Hopefully it helps a little, because we’re not quite sure Conan’s audience is the same as Lopez’s.

    Michael Jackson and Comedians

    michael-jackson_1.jpg
“You heard the one about Michael Jackson?” was how most of the school yard jokes of the 80′s and 90′s started. Yes, MJ was the butt of jokes. But at the Michael Jackson trial, the accuser had met the pop icon at the Laugh Factory on Sunset. So those testifying at his trial looked like comedy tour line up: Jay Leno, George Lopez, Fritz Coleman and Louise Palanker. There was a gag order that Leno couldn’t do any MJ jokes during the trial.

Anyway, it’s a strange dynamic. Michael Jackson dying effectively took 99% of the jokes about him with him. Gobsmacking talent indeed.

We found what Louise Palanker had to say about Michael Jackson on her website. It’s a sharp contrast to the televised barrage of fawning hangers-on for the past two weeks.
