Gerrick Kennedy Named NABJ Emerging Journo

Los Angeles Times reporter Gerrick Kennedy was selected as the recipient of the 2012 National Association of Black Journalists Emerging Journalist of the Year Award. He will be honored at NABJ’s 37th Annual Convention and Career Fair in New Orleans on June 23.

Kennedy, who covers music for the paper, started at the LAT in 2009 as part of the Metpro training program. The Ohio native graduated from The Ohio State University with a bachelor of arts degree in journalism and served as the editor, managing editor and Arts & Life editor of The Lantern, OSU’s student newspaper.

“I’m honored and humbled to receive such a prestigious award. As someone who has benefited from both NABJ’s Student Projects and the New York Times Student Institute it means a great deal to me that this organization and my peers value my work and have selected me for such an incredible honor,” Kennedy said in a statement.

The newspaper has sent us a statement saying we forgot to mention they’ve hired people too. Hear that obit writers? You should also talk about how people are being born. Otherwise it’s only half the story.
