Matt Damon Finally Turns the Tables on Jimmy Kimmel

For several years, it’s been the greatest running gag on late night talk TV: Jimmy Kimmel ending a show with the disclaimer, “Apologies to Matt Damon; we ran out of time.” Last night on Jimmy Kimmel Live, the double-punchline to that bit was finally delivered by Damon. In spades.

With a duct-taped Jimmy in the background, Damon at one point during his commando-host appearance gleefully revealed that Kimmel is a bitter, jealous soul who has auditioned for every one of the actor’s film roles:

EXCLUSIVE: How Reelz Got Ten Emmy Nominations for The Kennedys

There are countless examples in Hollywood of a successful film or TV project being rejected by the studios or networks before eventually going on to find a moment in the sun. But in the case of The Kennedys, this is also what happened with Reelz Channel’s PR campaign for the 2011 Primetime Emmys. The total of ten received by the Greg Kinnear-Katie Holmes drama is all the more impressive given the fact that awards season rookie Reelz was forced to do the campaigning themselves.

Ad Week has been keeping close tabs on the business aspects of Reelz Channel’s risky pick-up of The Kennedys, the eight-part miniseries deemed too hot for The History Channel.

Earlier this month, the trade magazine reported that network CEO Stan Hubbard (pictured) was banking about half his entire 2011 PR budget on a massive campaign that includes a nationwide billboard blitz launched Monday, March 7th. Now comes word that with less than a month left before air date, he has sold only a fifth of the program’s TV ad space. He blames, in large part, the media:

“This shouldn’t be controversial. There should be plenty of businesses that should be behind it,” said a frustrated Hubbard. “It’s nonsensical…”

Reelz Shows What It Can Do for The Kennedys

It’s definitely a little early to prognosticate the 2011 Emmy Awards. But based on the trailer for the eight-part miniseries The Kennedys (below), in which Tom Wilkinson as Joe Kennedy Sr. steals every excerpted scene from co-stars Greg Kinnear, Katie Holmes and Barry Pepper, it would seem more than likely that the esteemed British actor could be headed for his third recent such nomination flavored by American politics.

In 2008, Wilkinson was nominated at the Emmys for the HBO movie Recount and won that same year for the HBO miniseries John Adams. Something about starring in cable TV Presidential dramas really seems to agree with him.
