Manhattan Launched in Manhattan, or, The Six Degrees of Mediabistro.com

Some of you with ultra sharp memories might recall a post we did last June about Manhattan a new addition to the luxury magazine market, conceived by the folks who are also responsible for Miami. Well, it’s arrived! The launch party for the premiere issue, “Remembrance of Thing Future” was held last night at the Bryant Park hotel, directly across the street from the Bryant Park tents. The fact that the “modern luxury” magazine (free issues were mailed to the 65,000 most affluent households in New York)is also hitting the market the same week the government had to bail out Fannie and Freddie to keep the entire economy from collapsing didn’t appear to throw a wrench into the party atmosphere at all.

Rafat Ali: I Learned From Watching David Carr

Rafat Ali, paidContent.org founder, on where he got his journalistic chops:

One of the things I tell people is that at Inside.com, how I learned to report was actually from watching you [FishbowlNY contributor Greg Lindsay] and [now-New York Times media reporter] David Carr conduct interviews on the phone. In school, they never teach you how to do phone interviews — they never teach you about interviews in the first place. One of the things I learned from David Carr — I overheard him because he was generally loud, especially at the old Inside.com building where I sat across from him — was how to ask the hard questions.

By the way: Ali’s guilty pleasure? “Carpenters.” We’re hoping he means the band.

Greg Lindsay Lands Book Deal

It appears all those long, sweaty days spent globe-trotting in airports finally paid off: contributing FishbowlNY editor and freelancer du jour Greg Lindsay has finally landed a book deal. Via Publisher’s Weekly:

Paul Elie at FSG bested four other bidders in an auction for Aerotropolis by John Kasarda and Greg Lindsay; agent David Kuhn sold world rights for six figures. The “aerotropolis,” a term popularized by University of North Carolina business professor Kasarda, is a combination of giant airport, planned city, shipping facility and business hub. The book will take a look at this emerging phenomenon, now reshaping life from Dubai to Amsterdam to the D.C. suburbs, to show us how we will live in the near future. Lindsay is a contributor to Fast Company, for which he profiled Kasarda; Lindsay also crisscrossed the globe for three weeks for Advertising Age without ever stepping foot outside an airport.

Lindsay also recently announced his engagement to ex-City magazine executive editor Sophie Donelson. Pretty decent year so far for the lad.

Celeb Makeup Artist @ mb’s Makeup Mixer: “No Phones Thrown at Me”

It’s taken us this long to work our way through all the sparkly cosmetics we were gifted by event sponsor The Body Shop after Wednesday evening’s “The Makeup Mixer,” a mediabistro.com gathering for beauty and health editors and bloggers. Ably hosted by mb contributor Greg Lindsay (himself a fashion media refugee, having worked for WWD among other style-centric outlets), the party featured a demonstration by makeup artist to the stars Chase Aston, international make-up artist and spokesperson for The Body Shop, who’s worked with the company for more than a decade.
