SXSW ’09 Wrapup: A Whole Lot of Twitter Going On

webnewsegggr_sxsw01.gifOur managing editor Rebecca Fox has concluded her time at SXSW and made it back to the happy shores of Manhattan with this wrap-up, which she has posted over at WebNewser. Did SXSWi manage to out-Twitter Twitter? Says Rebecca:

With Twitter’s ubiquity across the 10,000+ attendee conference, we found the spontaneous creation of session-, speech- and shindig-specific hashtags to be among SXSWi 09′s greatest takeaways. The sheer volume of Tweets coming out of the festival rendered the dedicated #SXSW tag all but useless, so attendees and panelists quickly created the DIY hack of hatching hashtags specific to individual talks at the start of many sessions. From #webfem and #hotttsex to #free, the tags helped those interested in specific sessions but who couldn’t attend — whether they were in a different panel across the Austin Convention Center, or across the country — stay abreast of sessions and topics that interested them.

She also recounts what sounds like a fiery panel between Alltop creator Guy Kawasaki and Wired‘s Chris Anderson. You can read the exchange and more of Rebecca’s takeaway here.

What’s UGCX all about?

User-generated content is a rapidly developing revolution in media. “Average Joe” internet users now wield power over online content, and new business models are emerging in response to this shift. UGCX is the first conference and expo organized to bring together content-trendsetters and business leaders in various fields to examine how these worlds collide and what the future holds. This new mediabistro.com event will unlock the knowledge businesses and non-profits need to respond to this shift.

The conference is Feb. 9-10 in San Jose. Register here.
