Two Gourmet Staffers Join Former Publisher At Marie Claire

marie claire jan.jpgThe death of Cond&eacute Nast‘s award-winning Gourmet might already exist in the “things that happened last year” category, but the ghost of the beloved title still lingers in today’s stories.

Consider the announcement from Marie Claire today, which mentions that the U.S. edition of the magazine has just hired two new ad executives to work with Nancy Berger Cardone, the vice president and publisher of the Hearst mag. Both Diane DePaul and Anne Yost Carroll come from previous jobs at both Allure and Gourmet, where Cardone was formerly vice president and publisher. The new appointments bring DePaul on at the women’s magazine as associate publisher/advertising while Carroll will serve as account director. DePaul and Carroll are replacing Tami Eagle Bowling and Rachel Schauman, respectively, who are both leaving the company, today’s announcement said.

Prior to working as associate publisher at Allure, which she left in 2008 to join Gourmet, DePaul worked as associate publisher for Seventeen and advertising director for Soap Opera Digest/Soap Opera Weekly. Carroll has previously worked at Health magazine and advertising agency Saatchi & Saatchi.

Cardone is not hiding her hiring favoritism, saying in a statement: “I’ve worked closely with Diane and Anne at both Gourmet and Allure, and I am thrilled to bring them on as part of the Marie Claire team. Their industry experience and energy will be essential to the continued success of the brand.”

Prevention Names Pilates Expert Fitness Editor

B00005NIOO.01.LZZZZZZZ.jpgHere’s some early holiday cheer for the magazine industry: Rodale Inc., which holds such fitness titles as Men’s Health, Runner’s World and Bicycling magazine, has just hired one of its freelance contributors as fitness editor for Prevention magazine.

Jessica Cassity has recently worked as a freelance fitness writer for The New York Times, Fitness, Self, Shape and Weight Watchers, as well as Prevention. Previously, she was a contributing editor at Health magazine.

Cassity also co-created the Pilates instructor Web site www.pilates-pro.com and worked as Soho community leader for Lululemon, where she managed the apparel company’s community-based programs like free yoga in Bryant Park.

Prevention Expands Sales Team

prevention.jpegPrevention magazine is doing what many print publications are doing — expanding its sales team.

Today, the health and wellness publication announced the appointment of Estee Cross as an account director in New York and Hillary Duff as account manager in Chicago.

Cross, a former franchise sales director and beauty director at Health magazine, will now be overseeing Prevention‘s food and packaged goods, DTC, retail and financial categories, while Duff, a former associate media director at Starcom Worldwide’s Procter & Gamble Print AOR division, will be overseeing print and digital sales.

Prior to Health, Cross worked at Fitness, Marie Claire, House & Garden and Victoria magazines. Duff previously worked for News Corp.‘s News America Marketing division and the Tsunami Foundation.

Another Magazine Death: Time Inc.’s Southern Accents Shuttered

southern.pngTime Inc. announced today that the upcoming September/October issue of Southern Accents will be the magazine’s last. Its Web site, SouthernAccents.com, will still operate, the company said.

Time Inc. subsidiary Southern Progress Corp. purchased Southern Accents in 1985. The 32-year-old magazine was published six times a year. A rep for Southern Accents told FishbowlNY that 20 people would be affected by the magazine’s closure, although she wasn’t sure whether they would be let go or retained in some way. “The company is going to make every effort to retain the employees,” she added.

Southern Accents is an elegant, sophisticated brand that has resonated with its devoted readers for many years,” said Sylvia Auton, the Time Inc. executive VP who oversees the Lifestyle Group. “However, in this difficult economy, we need to focus our energy, resources and investment on our biggest and most profitable brands, so we had to make this difficult decision.”

Southern Progress, which also publishes titles like Southern Living, Cooking Light, Health and Coastal Living, has gone through some tough cost cutting in recent months, with several staffers getting the axe.
