David Carr Remembers the Time Philip Seymour Hoffman Wrestled Rainn Wilson

DavidCarrMediumLogoIt happened at the 2008 Independent Spirit Awards, MC-ed under the Santa Monica big top by Rainn Wilson. As New York Times media critic David Carr recalls via a medium.com blog post, the late Philip Seymour Hoffman displayed a lack of vanity that is unusual among Hollywood types.

Reading the following passage, we thought also of Jack Nicholson on-screen in Terms of Endearment, letting his belly hang out as astronaut Garrett Breedlove. From Carr’s piece:

A gauntlet was thrown and the two men collided mid-room, rolling under tables, grappling for their lives in a ferocious, spontaneous death match. Hoffman had a belly, but the man was not soft — he gave as good as he got, huffing and puffing the whole time.

Somewhere in there, his pants slipped, and he was selling a fair amount of crack. It was not his best feature, but he did not seem to care, instead concentrating on the matter at hand, which was fighting Wilson to a joyous and crowd-pleasing standstill.

Killer Films Gets A Killer Investment

christinevachon.jpgWho says money can’t buy happiness? In the indie world anyway.

Killer Films, the upstart indie producer of such low-budget films as “Boys Don’t Cry” and “Far From Heaven,” has sold off half of itself to New York-based venture capital fund GC Corp, Variety says.

With this influx of cash, partners Christine Vachon and Pam Koffler, who are mainstays at events like the Gotham Awards and the Independent Spirit Awards, will go from making $3 million to $5 million indie projects to $40 million to $50 million films.

Killer had been partnered with “ER” creator John Wells, who will stay on as an executive producer for Killer releases.

Alternative Oscar-cast Planned/ WGA Denies Waiver

Award show magic and mystery abounds. Or not quite. The WGA has granted waivers to the Feb. 14 NAACP’s Image Awards, the Jan. 27 SAG Awards and the Feb. 23 Independent Spirit Awards, while turning down the Golden Globes, and now the Oscars.

Is all this because the WGA
(1) has so few members of color,
(2) believes actors will sound really, really dumb if left to their own devices, and
(3) all the cool people watch the Indies?

Producer Gil Cates hinted at plans for an alternative Oscar show and we’re guessing he doesn’t have Kre8tive attire, dreads and a performance by Sleepytime Gorilla Museum in mind.
