The Fader‘s Andy Cohn: ‘Great content first, figure out where it goes second’

With a bimonthly print publication, podcasts and a robust website and online store, The Fader has succeeded as a brand by allowing each of its outlets to have its own style, says Andy Cohn, president and publisher of Fader Media.

“We saw a lot of other music publications trying to become websites and just becoming very busy and very formulaic,” Cohn told Mediabistro for its latest So What Do You Do? interview. “For us, we let our website be the website and let the magazine play to its own strengths, both from a visual — design, photography — and medium- to longer-form journalism standpoint. The approach that we’ve always taken is great content first, and then figure out how and where it goes second. And we’ve always been willing to let our readership play a role in that, because we’re not going to ever be married to one medium.”

Vibe’s Jermaine Hall on What It Really Takes to Be EIC

In the same year that music mags Blender and Giant folded, Vibe shuttered, as well. But, luckily for the iconic mag, it was snapped up by a private equity firm, and editor-in-chief Jermaine Hall was brought on to resurrect the pub. And resurrect it, he did.

In the latest installment of Mediabistro’s So What Do You Do?, Hall explains how the mag is winning again and gives advice to aspiring EICs.

“A lot of things that come with being editor-in-chief aren’t necessarily drilled down into the day-to-day tasks,” he said. “It’s a lot of schmoozing; it’s a lot of fixing relationships; it’s a lot of bartering; it’s a lot of people skills, I would say. It’s really going out there to be the ambassador of the brand on all levels.”

For more, read So What Do You Do, Jermaine Hall, Editor-in-Chief of Vibe?

Pitchfork Founder on the Loss of Music Magazines

Way back in 1995, Ryan Schreiber was a high school graduate working as a record store clerk. Finding little on the Internet about indie music, he decided to start his own Web page and launched Pitchfork. With no publishing experience, the site eventually became the online authority on indie music, and nowadays a review there can make or break a career.

In the latest installment of Mediabistro’s So What Do You Do? series, Schreiber discusses what the success of sites like his means for print music magazines.

“I think if you’re going to be able to do a print publication that works in 2013, it has to really take advantage of that format, and the things that that format offers that are much more difficult to execute on the Web are having really expansive, beautiful layouts for your articles and features and making it feel like a desirable object.”

He continued, “It used to be that when you picked up a music magazine in, like, the 90s there was all this cheap, chintzy content thrown in there and goofy sidebars and just sort of filler, almost. And it’s really just not an option anymore. I feel like if people are willing to make an investment in a music magazine — or in a magazine of any sort, currently — they want something that feels substantial and feels significant. It’s not a joke. It’s a real thing.”

Welcome back to another edition of FishbowlNY’s weekly Cover Battle. Today we have Interview taking on Rolling Stone. Interview went with a fantastic photograph of Lena Dunham, a person who clearly could use more press.

Dave Karger on How Journalists Can Land TV Appearances

Dave Karger made quite a splash when, after almost two decades at Entertainment Weekly, he went to work for Fandango as chief correspondent. Now that he’s settled into the role, he tells Mediabistro what he’s been working on lately and offers up some advice for print journos looking to transition to TV. Here’s an excerpt:

How can someone position themselves for TV appearances of the kind that you make regularly? For a writer looking to get into that, is it just about getting the right job (where producers come to you), or is it about actively pitching yourself?
I think the important thing is just to know what you’re talking about and really study it. Find something that you’re extremely interested in, so that becoming an expert in it doesn’t feel at all like a job or a chore. If I didn’t have the job that I have, I would still be obsessed with the Oscars and I would still know who Quvenzhané Wallis is. It just happens to be that this is what I get to talk about for work.

I feel like all the great stuff I’ve gotten to do over the years, whether it’s the Today show or being the Academy greeter, it was never a calculated plan. I just tried to be comfortable in front of the camera and really develop an expertise. I think the fact of the matter is that I’m really interested in this, and that just shows when I talk about it or in the past when I have written about it.

For more, read So What Do You Do, Dave Karger, Chief Correspondent for Fandango?

Cover Battle: Vanity Fair or Interview

Welcome back to FishbowlNY’s weekly Cover Battle. This week we have Vanity Fair versus Interview. This Vanity Fair cover is one of three the magazine published for its first ever comedy issue. We picked this because Paul Rudd’s blue ensemble has us thinking thoughts. It’s not a bad look, right? Just nod your head if you agree.

Campbell wrote an introduction for that issue (pictured), and interviews she has conducted will be featured in the German edition, available January 20.

A quick word of advice to the Interview staff: If Campbell ever visits the office, hide the phones beforehand. Some might call that “overreacting,” we call it “surviving.”

John Mayer Is So Over “F***ing Lots of Girls”

Wanna save traditional media? Just talk to a crazy musician for your next feature. Seriously, the more Kanye stages an impromptu award show protest or Lady Gaga tells Oprah of her pre-Pandora dreams of being painted blue, the more I love it!

And, when it comes to hot quotable messes, it doesn’t get any better than the Playboy Interview with John Mayer. The musician and tabloid staple’s musings on sex, his childhood, and more sex is sure to keep him a trending topic. (Or in Twitter time, at least the next couple hours.)

Read our top five Mayer-isms after the jump. Note: because the interview truly is worth reading in its entirety, the following is taken unabashedly out of context.

Interview Turns 40, Announces New Look

It’s been a rough couple of years for Brant Publications, which publishes Interview magazine. But that doesn’t seem to have affected the glossy Q&A magazine, which is celebrating its 40th anniversary with its October issue and — according to a report by WWD — launching a new look next year.

Reports WWD:

“Come spring, [new president Evanly Schindler] said new contributors and photographers will be on the masthead but he declined to provide more details, adding it’s too early to describe how the issue will unfold.”

Interview has seen its leadership change a couple times since longtime editor Ingrid Sichy departed last year. The magazine is now being run by editorial director Fabien Baron, editor-in-chief Stephen Mooallem and creative director Karl Templer, WWD said.

The title’s October issue, which commemorates its 40th birthday, features Twilight star Kristen Stewart on the cover.

New Bosses At Interview, Weather Channel & Current TV

Although they have nothing to do with each other, we noticed that there have been lots of appointments to the top spot at a handful of media organizations over the last few days. Is something in the air?

Interview magazine, which was at the center of some controversy at publisher Brant Publications earlier this year, seems to finally have established a powerful editorial team. The New York Times reports today that BlackBook founder Evanly Schindler has been named president of the magazine, while editor Stephen Mooallem, has been promoted to editor-in-chief. Former creative director Karl Templer, who left Interview earlier this year, is returning, and he will report to Fabien Baron, the editorial director who left and then returned last month.

Earlier today, Broadcasting & Cable reported that the Weather Channel is getting a new CEO. The company, which had been searching for a chief for months, named former AOL Media Networks head Michael Kelly to its top spot.

And on Friday, our colleagues at BayNewser revealed that former MTV Networks president Mark Rosenthal had been picked to lead Current Media, the parent company of Current TV and current.com.

There have been some big changes in the media world, and we can probably expect more to come as companies look for new solutions and fresh blood to tackle problems brought on by the economy. And as more executives and top talent get cut from cost-cutting companies, the pool of available people who can run a media organization is growing.

The Drama At Brant

This week, there has been a flurry of news coming out of Brant Publications, the publisher of Interview magazine.

On Monday, there were reports that editorial director Glenn O’Brien had left the company. O’Brien had been appointed co-editorial director of Interview and Brant’s other publications,Art in America and The Magazine Antiques, last year when longtime editor Ingrid Sischy left the company.

Coming in to replace O’Brien is Fabien Baron, who was originally O’Brien’s co-editorial director but was in the role for a matter of months before being let go.

Of course, this whole shake-up has tongues wagging about the health of the company, with some predicting that the company might be in dire financial straits. As O’Brien told Fashion Week Daily, the publisher simply isn’t able to pay its freelancers.

Brant is now being run by Ryan Brant, a disgraced former CEO of software company Take Two, who pled guilty to stock option backdating. He was appointed by his father, Peter, after publisher Alan Katz departed a few months back.

“Months ago, I wanted to bring in a professional publisher, which might have averted this cash flow situation,” O’Brien told FWD. “Basically, it’s been rudderless [ever since Katz's departure] on the publishing side.”

Interview Unveils New Design: Maybe Size Does Matter

Your eyes are not playing tricks on you. Next time you go to the newsstand you’ll probably notice that Rolling Stone has shrunk. The magazine announced a few weeks ago that it was cutting down its classic large size due to (you guessed it) dropping sales, as part of an effort to make it more “rack-friendly.”

Interview, however, is also set to launch a redesign and they are going in the opposite direction: according to Folio: the new look will be an inch longer and feature “a striking foil-and-ink cover — the first North American magazine to do so” (better to compete with Esquire‘s digital one, perhaps?), Also, the September issue will carry an additional twelve pages of ads.
