WCBS-AM, WABC-TV and WNBC Among the RTDNA Award Winners

The Radio Television Digital News Association (RTDNA) has been recognizing top achievements in electronic journalism with the Edward R. Murrow Awards since 1971. Today, the organization announced its 2011 recipients in radio and TV in regions throughout the country.

In the large market radio division, WCBS-AM won four times, including for Overall Excellence.

Newsradio 880 also was victorious for Audio News Series (Chasing the Next High) with reporter Irene Cornell, and Use of Sound by reporter Sean Adams.

“Given the level of competition in the region, we’re thrilled at the honor,” Tim Scheld, WCBS-AM news director, tells FishbowlNY.

Scheld singles out another WCBS award winner, Best Audio Newscast (September 17th 7 a.m.) from the morning after the New York City tornado hit, as dozen of staffers gathered information in and out of the newsroom.

“That’s a nice honor. I’m thrilled for our crew, plus being part of the CBS family, the Murrows mean something special here,” Scheld says.

WBBR/Bloomberg Radio took home the prize for Audio Feature Reporting (The New Economics of Hollywood).

WNYC Radio was named Best Audio Reporting: Hard News (Deportations Before Reform: Anatomy of an Immigration Bust).

Cronkite To Be Honored At New York Press Club Annual Conference

cronkite2.pngThe New York Press Club is set to convene it’s 17th annual conference at NYU’s Kimmel Center later this month.

The gathering, themed “Hard News in Hard Times,” will see late news legend Walter Cronkite inducted into the organization’s hall of fame and WCBS courts reporter Irene Cornell honored with a prize for outstanding achievement in journalism. David Faber of CNBC will provide the keynote address.

If conferences are your thing and you’re free on Saturday, September 26, you might consider forking over the $50 for non-members ($35 for members, $15 for students.) In addition to the usual fare of how-to’s, there are a number of panels focused in one way or another on the changing media landscape.
