Anchor/Reporter Peter Thorne Leaving WPIX

One of the last remnants of the pre-Bill Carey regime, veteran newsman Peter Thorne is leaving Channel 11.

The station released a terse two-sentence statement saying in part that Thorne is leaving effective December 31, to “pursue emerging opportunities in broadcast journalism, new media, and charitable works.”

Thorne spent ten years with WPIX as an anchor and reporter. When Jodi Applegate took over the weeknight 10 p.m. newscasts in October 2010, the WPIX shuffle was on. Carey, who joined the Tribune-owned station in November 2009 as news director, shifted weekend anchors Thorne and Jackie Hyland to weeknight reporting duties. Hyland left Channel 11 in March 2011.

Jim Watkins, the station’s former main co-anchor with Kaity Tong, was relegated to weekends upon Applegate’s arrival. Carey officially severed ties with Watkins in October.

Since Watkins’ departure, Tong has assumed the role of weekend anchor.

As f0r Thorne, he won multiple awards, including a 2005 Emmy Award. He joined WPIX in September 2001, just days before the 9/11 attacks. His bio on the WPIX website says Thorne reported from Ground Zero as his first assignment with the station.

Former WPIX Reporter Jackie Hyland Packs Bags for Raleigh-Durham

Jackie Hyland, whose contract was not renewed by WPIX/Channel 11 in March, is joining WRAL, the CBS affiliate in Raleigh-Durham, North Carolina as an evening anchor.

Hyland started her second stint at WPIX in August 2009 as weekend anchor. In 2010, Hyland was shifted to reporter after Jim Watkins took over the Saturday and Sunday night anchor duties.

Previously, Hyland was with Channel 11 from 2000 to 2005.

Hyland begins her new gig on September 27th.

Our sister site TVSpy has more on the story.

Veteran Cable Anchor Laurie Dhue Finds Work at WPIX

You’ll recall Laurie Dhue from her anchoring on the Fox News Channel from 2000 to 2008. During that time, Dhue was also featured prominently as reporter for Geraldo at Large.

A WPIX spokeswomen tells FishbowlNY that Dhue is now a fill-in PIX Morning News anchor on a per diem basis.

You’ll recall, morning anchor Chris Burrous left Channel 11 last month for the Tribune owned station in Los Angeles.

Other comings and goings at WPIX, WPIX brought meteorologist John Marshall on board in per diem role earlier this month, while the contract of veteran reporter/anchor Jackie Hyland was not renewed.

Veteran Reporter Jackie Hyland Leaves WPIX–Again

Jackie Hyland, who was in her second stint with WPIX, has officially left the station. WPIX confirmed to FishbowlNY that Hyland’s contract was not renewed at the end of March.

Hyland, who worked at WPIX from 2000 to 2005, was back at Channel 11 in August of 2009 as weekend anchor. However, her days were, apparently, numbered. Once news director Bill Carey brought in Jodi Applegate from News 12 Long Island in October 2010, that led to previous weeknight co-anchor Jim Watkins flying solo on Saturday and Sunday night newscasts.

“Right now, I’m spending time with my girls, and pursuing other opportunities,” Hyland tells FishbowlNY.

‘A Big Change’ at WPIX, News Director Bill Carey Says

applegate5.jpgAs we reported on Monday, Jodi Applegate is set to anchor the WPIX weeknight newscasts at 10 p.m., and with that, the veteran team of Jim Watkins and Kaity Tong has been reassigned.

News director Bill Carey told FishbowlNY that a move like this became essential.

“It’s necessary to make a big change at Channel 11,” Carey says. “I don’t think it’s any secret that we’ve never been one, two, three or four in the ratings.”

So now Carey, who joined WPIX in 2009, makes his biggest splash at the station. He switches the likeable tandem of Watkins and Tong for another popular personality in Applegate.

“Jodi exemplifies a mix of characteristics that we find compelling,” Carey says. “She knows the market; she’s worked at a competitor and has a competitive fire.”

More from Carey follows the jump.
