HuffPost Alums Pivot to Late Night Talk Show Aimed at Millenials

You may most recently remember him, Jacob Soboroff, from the west coast end of HuffPost Live. She, Cara Santa Maria, is a former senior science correspondent for The Huffington Post and host of embedded HuffPo Web series Talk Nerdy To Me.

Together the pair are now co-hosting TakePart Live, the weekday late-night talk show component (12 a.m. ET/9 p.m. PT) of Participant Media’s new TV network Pivot, which launched yesterday. The pair looked comfortable on their handsome new set as they discussed – yes, live – Edward Snowden and various other topics.

Arianna Huffington Responds to Mayor’s LAT Suggestion

During a half-hour Wednesday sit-down with HuffPost Live Los Angeles co-host Jacob Soboroff, newly minted mayor elect Eric Garcetti at one point made a funny throwaway observation. Instead of Rupert, Charles/David or Eli, how about Arianna Huffington as the new owner of the LA Times, he mused.

FishbowlNY put in a request today to HP-HQ for Arianna’s reaction, but she {sniff} opted for the broader pulpit of Twitter:

Shaq, Phil, Jeanie and Fellow Lakers ‘Superman’ Hang Out at HuffPost Live

This was anything but the usual HuffPost Live Google+ hangout. Ahead of tonight’s retiring of Shaquille O’Neal‘s Lakers jersey at Staples Center, host Marc Lamont Hill welcomed Shaq, Phil Jackson, Jeanie Buss and (a little later into the conversation) Kurt Rambis. Before O’Neal, Rambis also famously earned the nickname “Superman” from Chick Hearn.

There’s no better way to get in the mood for tonight’s induction ceremony (or follow it up later) than by watching this half-hour conversation. You know it’s a good HuffPost Live segment when one of the network’s other hosts, Jacob Soboroff, chimes into the chat room with, “One of the great HPL interviews. Well done.”

A favorite part for us was when Buss reacted to Shaq’s first set of comments, explaining that she had never heard the story of what Jerry West told #34 when The Big Newcomer first joined the purple and gold. The story magically ties into what is scheduled to transpire at Staples tonight.

FishbowlLA Set Visit: HuffPost Live

For HuffPost Live co-host Jacob Soboroff, a signature moment during his first six months of service involved the 2013 Sundance documentary The Square.

When the filmmakers arrived at the Beverly Hills studio, one was on the phone with an acquaintance in Cairo. By the time the visiting duo sat down for their interview, a producer had arranged for that acquaintance to be part of the on-air discussion as well, as an Egyptian subject matter expert (via Google hangout).

The term “expert” is one of many being redefined daily by Soboroff and colleagues Alyona Minkovski and Nancy Redd from 3 to 7 p.m. PT, when the dynamic trio cap HuffPost Live’s twelve-hour weekday block. An expert can be anyone and everyone, often recruited through social media; journalism meanwhile is very much here a mix of the subjective and objective. As HuffPost Live president Roy Sekoff told us during our visit last Friday, “We want our hosts to have opinions.”
