LA Weekly Loses Web Editor to… Modern Farmer !?

Nothing against Modern Farmer, a print quarterly and companion website launching in the spring. But when west coast media folks like LA Weekly Web editor Jake Swearingen make the sideways career jump, it’s typically to an enterprise with a Twitter handle like @ModernFam, not @ModFarm.

Equally strange, at least to us, is the fact that Modern Farmer is headquartered not in Nebraska but rather New York City Hudson, NY. Swearingen is making the cross-country journey now with his girlfriend. He has been replaced at LA Weekly by Ali Trachta.

“Jake has been the architect of the Weekly‘s Web strategy – and a damn good one,” editor-in-chief Sarah Fenske tells FishbowlLA. “In 2012, we saw a 22% increase in unique visitors and 55% increase in page views from the prior year. That was all Jake.”

Cal Poly Stages Another Successful ‘Com Day’

A whole lot of media shaking took place Thursday on the campus of Cal Poly Pomona.

During the school’s annual “Com Day,” students got to listen to blogger-turned-author Julie Powell (Julie and Julia), Pulitzer Prize winning LA Times photographer Barbara Davison, Los Angeles Angels vp of communications Tim Mead and personal manager Danny Sussman. Then it was time for the school to honor a well-known local news personality.

Laura Diaz, until recently a fixture at CBS LA, was the guest of honor at the Hilda L. Solis Scholarship dinner and reception. She was there to accept the 2012 Nopal Award.

OC Weekly, SF Weekly Hit With Layoffs

A major series of layoffs hit the Village Voice Media chain today. California got hit especially hard. FishbowlLA has confirmed that OC Weekly lost staff writer Chasen Marshall, who was with the paper for the past year or so. That leaves the Weekly with only three staff writers.

Layoffs absolutely decimated the SF Weekly, which lost four editorial staffers: Web editor Jake Swearingen, SFoodie blog editor W. Blake Gray, reporter Matt Smith, and calendar editor and blogger Hiya Swanhuyser. Smith’s loss is especially brutal. He had been with the paper for more than a decade and was by far the paper’s most well-known and popular writer.

From what we’re told, the carnage isn’t over. LA Weekly may very well be hit with yet another round of layoffs before the end of the week. More on that as it comes in.
