A Full Week of James ‘Whitey’ Bulger

On Sunday November 24, 60 Minutes correspondent Steve Kroft revisited the Boston gangster’s undercover life and capture in Santa Monica, although his report very strangely skipped over any specific mention of Anna Bjornsdottir (a.k.a. Anna Bjorn), the former Miss Iceland (1974) whose tip led to Bulger’s capture and her pocketing the $2.1 million reward.

MDCBrooklynOn Tuesday, Bulger was quietly moved from a facility in Norfolk, MA to one in Brooklyn. So quietly in fact that hometown reports like this one in the Boston Herald surfaced only two days later.

Finally, on Friday, Boston Globe reporter Shelley Murphy revealed that authorities hope to auction off Bulger’s personal possessions (minus the guns) to benefit families of his victims. Despite the headline appended to her article and several other reports with a similar theme, the auction will not be happening in time for Christmas. The event must first be sanctioned by a court, after which it generally takes 30 to 60 days for it to be scheduled.

Major Media Outlets Run with Wrong ‘Whitey’ Bulger Aliases

Former FishbowlNY contributor Hunter Walker was all over Santa Monica this morning, on the hunt for The Daily scoops about the real-life version of Jack Nicholson‘s character in 2006 Best Picture winner The Departed. News of James “Whitey” Bulger‘s shocking Wednesday arrest after years on the lam with a girlfriend was first reported by the LA Times.

Walker tweeted that several major media outlets (NPR, CBS News, etc.) wrongly reported the westside apartment alias listed for Bulger. Tagged in the confusion was Charlie Rosenzweig, the bad guy’s eighty-ish property owner neighbor, as well as Rosenzweig’s daughter-in-law, whose last name is Fein.
